Older Comments about Sweet Reason...

If you go by the numbers and factor in Beyer Speed Figures, IMO Sweet Reason might very well be the best two-year old in the east so far. And if you look at the ease with which she won both her races and the overall professionalism that she has displayed, you might even say that it’s possible that she’s worthy of the title of best two year old in the country……When comparing Strong Mandate, Honor Code and Sweet Reason’s races and going back and looking at the race replays, several interesting things stand out……First the numbers……Strong Mandate’s individual 7-F Hopeful fractions from start to finish were: 22.64; 22.68 (45.32); 24.64 (1.09.96); 13.59 (1.23.55). His finishing fractions were: last 1F – 13.59; last 3F – 38.23; last 5F – 1.01.25. He won the race by a geared down 9 ¾-L and for this effort he received an 85 Beyer, lower than Honor Code’s and Sweet Reason’s last race Beyers. It’s interesting to note that the DRF track variant that day was -14…….Honor Code’s only race to date was that 7-F maiden. In that race he broke with the pack and was quickly, (without much restraint), reigned back. His individual fractions in this race from start to finish were: 25.31; 24.64 (49.95); 21.71 (1.11.66); and 11.82 (1.23.48). Honor Code’s finishing fractions were: his last 1F - 11.82; last 3F - 33.54; last 5F - 58.18. For his effort he received an 89 Beyer based on a DRF track variant of -12 (which means that the track was playing slightly faster than it was for the Hopeful…….As we can see, Strong Mandate’s numbers are heavily weighted towards the early fractions and Honor Code’s are heavily weighted towards the latter fractions, and yet they finished within .07 seconds of each other, which translates to less than a half-length……When judging just these two alone, the Champagne is going to be a classic matchup between a strong early pace pusher who has the ability to go to the lead early or at any time during the race, and a dramatic deep closer that can be rustled back without the jock having to use a stranglehold and make the horse exert important energy just by fighting the bit. For pundits interested in speed numbers, this has to be the ultimate test for comparing early speed and late closing abilities…….. But what about Sweet Reason? If you have a chance to look at the video replay of her first race, then you would wonder why all the talk about Honor Code’s closing abilities and not hers. In that race she was 18 lengths back at the quarter. She then demonstrated her abilities by closing like a rocket around the far turn, switching out to the five path, (Honor Code rode the rail), and was a half-length in front at the 16th pole before going on to win by better than six lengths. Her finish was so devastating that at the 8th pole Tom Durkin said that Sky Crew, who had the lead at that point, was “just opening it up and pouring it on”, in the usual drawl he would normally use when a horse is destroying a field. Then Sweet Reason showed up, back so far even at the 8th pole, and yet in the lead at the 16th pole……Sweet Reason also has interesting numbers. In that 5 1/2F maiden race she came home the final 3 1/2F in 39.44. She actually had the lead at the 16th pole, which means that her 3F’s leading up to that 16th were in 33.34 seconds, which was .20 (a little more than a length) faster than Honor Code’s final three furlongs in 33.54. And she did this on a track that was considerably slower as per the DRF variant of -19 to Honor Code’s -12. Her Beyer wasn’t great that day, only an 82, but her command of the track and speedy close were breathtaking……Sweet Reason’s 7-F Spinaway numbers aren’t as spectacular, but they are still excellent: 23.15; 22.97 (46.12); 24.58 (1.10.70); 12.72 (1.23.42), her time comparing to both Strong Mandate’s and Honor Code’s 7-F times. Her Spinaway finishing fractions were: her last 1F – 12.72; last 3F – 37.30; last 5F – 1.00.27. Then we look at two significant points, (A), she ran a more balan

  • tmallios1 · Laz,just woke up to see your work.Regardless if i agree or not.The contents are very well stated. All i can say is that between the Frizette/ Champagne. You my friend had better unload on the Daily Double. Or at the very least ,go for the P4 starting R8.You have your faves in first 3 legs>>> LLama/ Sweety / Strong Mandate and then Dutch the 4th leg and pray for a mad bomber reenactment ala Darryl Lamonica in his hey dey. For me,the Frizette is difficult to honestly be objective. With my close ties to Recepta , i have to root for her . Believe me, i think she is a filly with an extremely high ceiling.Sweety being nobvious use in any gimmick play. The 2 that my eye keeps going back to are Artemis Argotera and Divided Attention. I am hoping StopchargingMaria will hook it up with Artemis on the engine and cancel each other out. Good Luck. · 1298 days ago
