  • ekindy · @Ruffianlover I think the differences are greatly exaggerated. Remember Princess took some time off after the Oaks as well. Princess ran exactly one more race for the year than Beholder, and ran exactly one more race than Beholder between the Oaks and the Distaff. Yes it's a difference but it's not so much of a difference that you take the award away from Beholder. And also remember Princess stayed home when other contenders (in fact ALL other Oaks runners if I am not mistaken) ran in March prep races. Are we going to discount her Oaks victory because of that? · 85 days ago ·

  • Mike in SB · 1993 was one of the greatest years for American Turf horses with both Lure and Horse of the Year Kotashaan, and another top turf horse Bien Bien who I believe was a son of the great Manila. I remember seeing Kotashaan beating Bien Bien by a nose in the 1 3/4 mile San Juan Capistrano and later winning by a neck or so in the Breeders Cup Turf. Super group of turf horses that year. · 172 days ago ·

Associated Press Published: Saturday, May 4, 1996 Grindstone nipped Cavonnier at the wire in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday and gave trainer D. Wayne Lukas an incredible sixth straight victory in a Triple Crown race. Read More
  • CauseForConcern · The Triple Crown that was influenced by Grindstone: After winning the Kentucky Derby, it was determined that he was injured, and be retired, to stand at stud. Since Jerry Bailey had rewarded Lukas with the Derby, it was only fitting that he provide him with the best of the rest of his stock. He decided that Bailey would ride Prince Of Thieves, who finished third behind Grindstone in the Derby, in the Preakness. This move cost Pat Day a mount, but, Nick Zito came a calling. He asked Day if he would like to ride his colt, Louis Quatorze, who finished 16th in the Derby. Day accepted the offer, and proceeded to lead wire-to-wire. As Day crossed the finish line, he threw up his hand, as if to say that this was Number 5 Preakness win. Or, was it something directed at Lukas for taking him off of a live mount? When the Belmont came around, the one that would be the victor was none other than Editor's Note, who was the betting interest entrymate of Grindstone in the Kentucky Derby. And he,not Grindstone, was probably more of the reason why Grindstone didn't pay that much in the Derby. So, there you have it: 1996, the year the Triple Crown was influenced by Grindstone. · 304 days ago ·

  • shadowno · The level playing field not my comment, but with regard to the surface, geography played a part given the tracks proximity to the San Gabriel mountains. Heavy rains and flooding/runoff from the mountains washed away part of the pro-ride surface in 2009-10 costing them racing days and $$$$$. Also, I don't believe it ever drained as advertised like the cushion track that cost multiple dates in 08.. It was a safer surface for horses, by reported fatilities, signifigantly so, even factoring in the lost days. But here (probably even more here given the state budget and miserable economy), as everywhere $$$$ talks and a closed track can't produce revenue. And with Awesome Gem that 1 win happened to be the Hollywood Gold Cup and he produced clutch efforts in the Pacific Classic, San Antonio and Goodwood in over synthetics so I'll give him credit for his ability to handle prety much anything thrown his way. · 866 days ago ·
