Breeding Racehorses: Finding A Boyfriend For Groupie Doll
My quest to find a few suitable stallions for 2012 Breeder's Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner, Groupie Doll. Some choices are obvious, but at least one will certainly surprise you.

I looked at her pedigree and her strongest lines are in the 4th and 5 th generations...So we are hoping her talent seeps thru somehow...I really like the 3/4 brother of Frankel for her ... The Nicks are there and you are putting a distance speed horse on top of a sprint speed mare both with acquired class.. BULLET TRAIN....AND he will be in his 2nd season of stud which I like best..... The Prince John Line is a added benefit on the bottom.. along with... Northern Dancer His Majesty etc.

Quality Road. Also A++ with Groupie Doll. Liked him since before his spaz in the '09 BCC. That was horrible handling of him, except for the guy that caught him while QR was blindfolded, and didn't let him run off to get injured. I allowed him excuses that others didn't. But, I see plenty o' excuses for their favs. Fast, fast, fast. I don't know a thing about breeding horses or what makes a good match, just liked this one. Hope Groupie Doll can still come back though, not be a mom yet, until a few more nice wins. I like your analysis of the matches, cocoa, but I'm not keen on the town bicycle, Tapit.

Quality Road provided such a great potential for racing........Almost got me worked up but then distance and soundness limitations crashed that idea. I just resort to one of the watch words given to me by a pro:NEVER fall in love with a horse. It just confounds your wagering.

I would argue that Groupie Doll is not late maturing. Yes, she did her best racing last year (2012), but it wasn't like she was not winning in 2011. Personally I like Shackleford for Groupie Doll, but I think his size could potentially be an issue.

I do want to point out, like floridaf, that Groupie Doll wasn't specifically late maturing. I think she excelled once the blinkers were added. I don't think she'll ever return to form, by the way. Great article, cocoa/colin. I like all your choices, perhaps besides Eddington.

@Kaitlin, while TrueNicks is a fantastic device for evalutating pedigree, it should get only so much credit. It fails to bring stud fee, location, conformation, ability and foal size into the equation. Tapit, for instance, is a good example. TrueNicks gives him a C+, yet I found multiple VERY successful horses from a Tapit/Dixieland band cross and from a Tapit/Deputy Minister cross. Why Tapit is rated C+ with her is beyond me and I find it a little crazy.

@LennyGeorge, Bullet Train is certainly an outstanding individual, however he is bigger than I like and he is also not a great fit for her. While Groupie Doll is not one who excels on dirt, the opposite can be said of Bullet Train. It is rare nowadays that an imported stallion will have great success, and as good as Bullet Train is, I don't think he is a good fit for Groupie Doll. For a mare like Lady of Shamrock, I'd book him right now!

@Mary, Katlin and Travel_vic, Quality Road is an outstanding individual. I considered him, but decided that since I had Elusive Quality, I might as well not write Quality Road. If GD and EQ do cross, and their foal is successful, I would expect that GD may visit Quality Road.

I agree with cocoa on Bullet Train. And, I think the two are very bad together. But, as cocoa said, for Lady of Shamrock I wouldn't hesitate to book him. I hope he gets plenty of solid mares. He could help establish turf excellence and endurance much like Dynaformer did. I'm very excited for the potential of turf excellence and endurance influences entering stud soon.

Floridaf, Rafi, Groupie Doll hit her best stride not as a baby but as a older individual. While it wasn't like she couldn't win at 2 and 3, it is more that she just was on a level playing field. Now she towers over the whole sprinting division. Bowman's Band was like that too, not starting until his 3 year old year.

Rafi, Eddington hasn't had the chance to get good mares. With the poor quality amount he does get, he does amazing things! I've emailed Claiborne about his height, just now.

Good analysis, guys. While it appears to be popular sentiment recently to be a little down on Tapit, I happen to think that he is one of the best sires in the U.S. He consistently produces the goods often with very little to work with. I give a lot more credit to sires like him who do it (rise to prominence) the hard way (starting at $12.5K) rather than those who start off high and flop to moderate levels (Ghostzapper at $200K comes to mind, even though he has stepped it up of late). Based on the choices offered here – to me, Tapit would appear to be the safest bet.

Shackleford is a tall, lean, Forestry/Unbridled stallion who is unproven. His size scares me. With a mare like Groupie Doll you want something proven, and he isn't. There is really little upside about him. He didn't have amazing blinding speed, just the ability to stay in front long enough to win. I loved him as a racehorse, but his value as a sire and match for Groupie Doll is minimal

No, he isn't. That's why Elusive Quality, then Midnight Lute, then Eddington, then Tapit and then Uncle Mo would be my breeding order. If you remember, proven means the horse has babies that have raced.

Cocoa- where have you been?. DO you even know what you are talking about?. With comments like yours you would think you started in this sport yesterday. Do you have ANY idea how succesfull Elusive Quality, Awesome Again, Ghostzapper, Lohnro has been at stud?......learn something. Bullet train is simply judging off his pedigree, which is top notch.

Marcello, just picking successful horses does nothing. Awesome Again, Ghostzapper, Lohnro, successful or not, are not good fits. We are picking a stallion for GROUPIE DOLL. Therefore we are matchmaking. Awesome Again, Ghostzapper, Lohnro do not suit her at all.

TrueNicks gives the letter grades. (truenicks.com) Their formula is based off pedigree completely. No regard for conformation, and the rest. They try to find nicks, lines that cross well with eachother. the theory of nicks is an old one.

Thanks, Cocoa. I'll go check it out. I'm familiar with breeding nicks, but I wonder what they use as the metric to determine success grade on their website. They have to use something that gauges progeny with similar breeding? Earnings perhaps?

Den's Legacy has had an interesting road to 10 KyDerby points: 3rd in CashCall, 2nd in Sham, 2nd in Robert B. Lewis. Another top three finish is going to keep on the slow road to the KyDerby but does anyone think he's flying under the radar? Or will the Rebel be his first time finishing outside the top 3?

I'm hoping for the 1A, 9, 4, 10 set some very fast faction which should setup for the Presser and deep closer. I know OP has been bias E and E/P but hoping for a change. This has been a balance week of bias at OP with the S being a bit lower.

at shorter route differences, there is no guarantee that the speed will not just run away with the contests as they often do. Why is there this common belief that fast early means closers will win? It just does not happen to the extent people believe it occuring.

I like the heck out of that Texas Bling! Very nice-looking, too, imo, but Ill take a look. He wasn't even in my picks last time, even though I saw his Springboard Mile win. He's got that story--underdog.

TB got caught on the front last time out. Don't think he needs it. We'll see. Some good runners in this one. I kinda expect Super Ninety Nine to run second or third. Wish Big Lute could've squeezed-in another race for some seasoning prior to this. Hey, he may not need it.

I think slop favors Texas Bling and Big Lute. This race is wide-open IMO. I still can't single-out a horse from this field. Here it goes: 1. Always in a Tiz, 2. Will Take Charge. 3. Texas Bling

You're welcome. I wish I had more info for you, but there hasn't been an update on him (that I know of) since his injury was announced back in April. It sounded as though he would be brought back, but with the way things have gone this year, if he were retired, it wouldn't surprise me.

Brian,, you brought tears to my eyes. This is what I've been feeling. This was not just "another Preakness". I thought I'll Have Another lost it before the turn. He was too far back, behind a monster who had it his own way. Bodemeister would not be coming back, and I could not believe my eyes when I saw I'll Have Another cut into that lead. It was inexcorable, but I still didn't think he'd get there until the last two jumps. It was the most amazing Preakness I've seen since Secretariat's.

Poetic, Brian. Watching that replay, it just made glad that someone had the talent to put all that I was thinking into words. I couldn't agree with you more. If I'll Have Another goes on to win the Belmont I think we can all say he certainly had to earn it every step of the way.

Great commentary Brian! I watch my DVR replay quite a bit, and I always get such a kick out of the fact that I enjoy watching it so much. I feel like I a newbie, not a fan/player/mutuel clerk who has numbly stared at a simulcast signal for over 25 years. I have not felt this way about a 3yo in a long time. Often enough a horse will get you excited, and regardless of how good they are, you just don't get attached. Not the case for me with I'll Have Another. I just want to wrap my arms around this colt, win or lose, and pepper him with hugs and kisses! It is so satisfying to see him run as he turns for home, legs flipping forward, ears pricked every which way, looking everywhere, but mostly ahead, and almost greenly, he runs the horse(s) in front of him down. And as you said, he just does it, not because the race set up for him that way. He is special. I am really looking forward to watching this horse grow. An expose in a few years as he romps in his paddock will find him to be a jaw dropping specimen of the perfect horse.

This is the most excited I have been since 2007 for sure. There are many legit G1 type horses in this field, and very few horses that you can actually say have no legit shot at wining the Derby. I have gotten so use to the 3yo fillies being the much better crop, this year is the complete opposite. Nice piece to get me more pumped up and wishing that 2 weeks flies by.

I agree that this is the best crop since 2007 and another thing is that this group seems to have better distance breeding than past crops. A lot of the top 2 year olds in recent years were not suited to the classic distance, this year many of the favorites going into the Derby look like they will have a good shot at 1 1/4 miles.

Mike, I would agree very much with that statement, as it is something i have noticed too. The breeding of most of the horses in this race screams distance, and not the typical speed push that we are used to seeing.

I think you've nailed it on the head! This is a great Derby class - and the facts are there to back it up! Even beyond that, I think this is deepest Derby I have ever seen - going back to 1990. There are probably 9 or 10 horses here who could run their race - and we would say they were deserving winners.

Cold hard facts that only two major contendewrs are out??? What about Algorithms, Sky Kingdom, Fed Biz?? As for "Depth of field" it might be more accurate to describe it as an "Evenly matched yet so far unremarkable field". Very few records will be falling this year, but as a consequence the competitions will be more exciting. Here's hoping that they all stay healthy!!

Sky Kingdom was never really a contender. It is a deep field when you look at the fact that pretty much every major Derby prep winner will most likely be there as of now. Less major players have been knocked off the Derby trail than usual.

6-1 on the favorite, this is why the Derby is such a great betting race. I think all the horses up to Alpha at 15-1 have a chance. The hard part is picking the right one, but if you do it will pay.

I can guarantee this...there's no way 8 horses will be bet heavier than Take Charge Indy. I'm not even a fan of the horse, but off the Fla Derby win and the simple fact its Calvin Borel, the horse will get bet a lot lower than he should be. The horse will be no worse than the 5th shot on the board when the gates open. Novice players who know nothing about the derby bet him just because hes won 3 of the most recent. Put him on an animal that actually has some form too, and he's no higher than 9-1 in my opinion. I mean, Twice the Appeal had ZERO chance in the derby last year and was 20-1 ML, and went off at 11-1. Battaglia even said the horse would have been 30-1 if any other jock was on him.

at least half the field has a great chance at winning. Some really powerful horses. Am thinking Bodemeister could be a tripple crown horse.

Dr. Hansen where did you confirm that Secret Circle will skip the Derby? I know you have SERIOUS connections and info..if that is true I can make a few bucks...

as for the west coast horses, Bodemeister looked like a monster in his win, so what does the win of I'll have another over Creative Cause who beat Bodemeister say, does it move him up or did the lightly run Bodemeister improve by leaps and bounds, hmmm, I think I'll have another has a huge chance off the win

Don't make Bodemeister a false favorite...he got a 25 and change breather in the middle of his win at Oaklawn as there was no real competition. Not gonna get away with this in Derby.

12-1 would be a fat price on Take Charge Indy.
