A Met Mile for the Ages: Shackleford and Caleb’s Posse
It was a one minute and thirty-three second masterpiece for both horses, and both of them truly ran too good to call either a loser.

Gutsy as they come...absolutely correct! This race was another race for the ages and indeed the fans were the real winners. Could today's version be just as dramatic?!

Could the 2013 running of the Met Mile be just as good? I can't wait to see because the Shackleford v. Caleb's Posse battle was as good as it gets.

Not for me! I remember, I had To Honor and Serve something like $100 W, $200 P!!!! I was confident in THAS and I really thought Shackleford wouldn't keep that pace! LOL.

I agree, the met mile was my favorite race of the year. It looks like it is a closely matched field, but I think that Shackleford and Caleb's Posse were just a midge stronger milers than the horses in this bunch

Was a great race, but I'd say that year's Preakness ranked right up there with it. I was a big Caleb's fan, lol. Still an awesome race to look back on. The one i'm most looking forward to, though, is the Acorn.

I loved Caleb’s Posse and think that he was one of our best dirt milers in quite some time. I jumped on his back after the Ohio Derby and bet him in every race after that, though to be honest, it was pretty discouraging to see him with all those seconds in his final year on the track. His BC Sprint win was electrifying to say the least, and his narrow defeat in the Met Mile was sad, the only thing tempering the disappointment of his defeat acceptable in my mind, was that it was to one of the most honest horses ever, Shackleford……My favorite Met Mile was when Honour and Glory won it in ’96 as a three year old in his first start after finishing 18th, beaten by 26 lengths, in the Derby. I actually bet him that day, mainly because of John V., at 12-1. His 1.32.80 is the stakes record……My second favorite Met Mile was in 1964 when Quadrangle finished 2nd as a three year old to top handicap horse Olden Times in a 12 horse field (the race was at Aqueduct), this after running in both the Derby and the Preakness. He came back a week later to win the Belmont.

Exactly what I was saying yesterday, I agree. Jay, once I owned a horse who won a allowance race, but got destroyed in LS. I've owned a few, I had one real, solid horse. Others were claimers.

cocoa, next time you're on Equibase checkout the results of a horse named Sway, foaled in 1977. He was one of my favorites, gave 100%. Three starts at age 11, a first, second, and a third. Earned a paycheck in 89 of 98 races. BIG, beautiful chestnut horse.

LS means "listed stakes", Jay. He's doing better, thanks for asking :). Fave claiming horse of all time is Soft Hit, just because my friend owned her, and I hit her in her maiden race :). Not sure if she is on Equibase, but she is on Pedigreequery.

Oh, haha. Sorry for the scare. While it is on topic, thanks for the e-mail, too, Lisa. Looked through it. I remember you said earlier that 70 out of the kast 73 derby winners had 14 or more dosage points. Also reaized, the average derby winner is about 2.26. This info (about dosage) is useful, and a fantastic additional tool, especially for the derby, so thanks, Lisa.

I'm sticking with the low CD's and a variation thereof. That, and trying to incorporate the Sires more, they get their c-d-r status so late in their career that you really have to project a little to forecast Derby 2013. Then there's the mares involved>> families and all.

Unfortunately Americans, and I do add myself to that that number until I was enlightened to a more WORLD centric approach to life, think the entire world starts and ends at their borders. Over 1100 people were killed the same week in a typhoon in the Phillipines.....REALITY is what it is.

Reality is that many race tracks WILL close in the next few years. Several major ones all based upon unbridled greed. Breeders are shooting themselves in the foot breeding speed to speed and then racing secretaries are complicit in the loss of the breed by continuing to card shorter and shorter races for the ridiculously inept horses which are the result of that shortsideness. One has to get past "pretty horsey' and make some noise about these major problems. I read this week in the New York Times that importers of horse meat now are rejecting it is mass...WHY??? It is too toxic for human consumption because it is loaded with pharmceuticals way past allowable consumption levels. The sport is out of control and hiding one's head in the sand will not do a thing to change it...

Diminsihing fan base, no major attempts at bringing new people into the sport (with minr exceptions), casinos taking over and supressing racing, many to the point that the racing is being slowly, but surely, phased out altogether, increasing the take out, major take overs in organizations like the NYRA taken over by political appointees and not racing people...Bleak picture ahead

I think she was too stubborn. Sometimes she took things in the right direction, and sometimes the wrong. That's the most unbiased I can get, I don't have any family in Northern Ireland *anymore*

Footlick, you asked for my opinion. Nevermind. I think Thatcher lost sight of her duty - it was to the PEOPLE of the United Kingdom, rather than the United Kingdom. She looks great on paper but the suffering she caused to the people of the British Isles is too much for me. Her lack of any understanding of history is astounding. She contemplated influxing MORE protestants into Ireland... as if it is not jerry-mandered and politically incorrect enough. I cannot say I'll dance on her grave with David McCullagh, but I won'

t say she was an average person. Her mistakes were MUCH too big for that. Police brutality... It makes me shudder. In the second paragraph of our Declaration of Independence it is written " But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.", it makes me wonder, whose fault was it that Margaret Thatcher could close the pits and lay off millions? Unionist views are not welcome. :)

cocoa2- I did ask because I wanted to know your opinion. Thanks for answering. Thatcher certainly did have to make that choice between country and people, albeit not alone as she had many advisors, and the choices they made did make her look good on paper.

As far as Northern Ireland is concerned, there hav been problems there with divided loyalties since the beginning of the 1600's. The history is just too much to blame one person. Both loyalists and unionists are to blame. The escalation to violence was sad, especially with the religious context of people being persecuted for their different branches of Christianity. The Troubles were a sad part of the history of Northern Ireland. The killings on both sides were so unnecessary. Both sides put what they wanted above the good of the people who were living there. I know you have a very strong view on it, but was not all one sided. The British, the Protestant Army and the IRA all had alot to do with the destruction of Belfast and the region.

terrorists are called that for a reason. I'm not going to debate the relative merits of the IRA, but I would assume ETA and Hamas have said the same thing- protecting the rights of their people. It is the way organizations go about it that ultimately defines them. I'm not here to label them or tell people what to believe about them. Everyone can read about their actions during the Troubles and decide for themselves.

Hamas is an issue close to my heart as well, but never did the IRA test weapons on its own citizens nor is its motto as violent and awful as that of Hamas. Thatcher let Sands die in a prison; was it too much to ask to come for a compromise? My own family was jailed without reason nor evidence but because they were old enough to have participated in the IRA. After that they were known for more than one shooting and burning in Cork and they took care of their horses and bikes too. Reading won't do any good, you have to see the scars on their arms and the wrinkled notes in Gaelige to recognize what really went on. People without a voice and still don't have one. Bobby Sands died for Ireland to be known, not for rights of prisoners. DeValera came to America to speak and it was the Cherokee who gave him the most support!

I understand either side but it should be recognized that the Protestants are not the enemy, but rather any man who stands between full rights for Irish citizens. I don't care if the counties are part of the UK, I care the Catholics and Protestants stop being beat up for what started peaceful and has and will escalate into something worse than a simple treaty can handle. Yorkshire and Ireland still have some kids hanging around who remember how it was with Thatcher and the Falklands are becoming more and more hostile.

there are good people no matter which organization they are affiliated. Could a compromise have been made during the hunger strike? Compromise can always be made. But since I do not know enough about the information that both sides had in their possession, and how England might have thought giving in to any demand of Sands might weaken their position in Northern Ireland, I can't make that judgement. Compromise can be difficult because it makes one side usually look weak and in an environment as hostile as the Troubles, or now in the Middle East, looking weak is not something that either side can afford. I remember (not actually of course. I am old, but not quite that old) Elizabeth Regina agonizing over the decision of whether she needed to kill her relative Mary Queen of Scots. It really came down to the fact that she could not give any impression of weakness, and not putting her to death when she had the proof of Mary's treason certainly would have painted her weak to the world. I truly believe in tolerance and the ability to live together. Cordoba in Muslim Spain proved that. Muslims, Christians and Jews lived in Cordoba when it was the center of learning under Muslim rule.

I am sorry, cocoa2, that tragedy has touched your family in Northern Ireland. And you may be right, a simple treaty may not be enough. I always feel like it is a timebomb there just waiting to detonate again. The problems that I have experienced due to intolerance are nothing in comparison. But I have known people who have lost their lives because of intolerance. I do not support any form of intolerance. Anyway, I wish the best to you and all your relatives. I hope things do not escalate again.

It seems strange at first to see a discussion about Northern Ireland on a horse racing site but I have been to Northern Ireland many times including during the Troubles, and one thing I am sure of is that all Irish people, green or orange love the horse. I remember being in Derry shortly after a bomb in London killed some of the Queens Horse Guard and several horses. There is an overpass in the Bogside area

After dealing with the surrogate substitions of fantasy for fact in explaining medical conditions to patients over the last years I have learned what Eddie Felson calls his being a "student of human moves." Rather than accept reality for what it is REAL, people will make up a glossy sugar coated narrative from ignorance and overlay over the factual status of what they are altering. Same here.
