What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Fly Down...

Time for us to realize that sending our top horses to Dubai to race on an unknown surface, thousands of miles away from their home, is no longer worth the money and prestige. Time for the connections of top horses to concentrate their efforts keeping their stars at their peak through a full and high...Read More

That's why I don't go out of my way to talk about Horse of the Year and Three-Year-Old Champion honors and bestow them on horses that have't raced all year to prove themselves. At long last, Drosselmeyer returned to the winner's circle, taking yesterday's One Count Stakes at Belmont Park by a determined neck. It was his first win since scoring by three-quarters of a length over Fly Down in last year's Belmont Stakes at odds of 13-1.Read More

  • medlocke · This year's Dubai World Cup really served to remind me how much I truly miss the race being run on the conventional dirt at Nad Al Sheba. Victoire Pisa had to come 5 or 6 wide to forge to the front early just to inject any pace at all into the race, as it was run at a terrible dottle. That move turned out to be the best tactical move of the race. As Victoire Pisa took the lead and never looked back. · 427 days ago ·

  • arazi · I'm definitely bummed that Fly Down won't come back. He was my favorite for the Classic this year, at least among the older horses. I don't think he really got to show how talented he was last year. Take Z and Blame out of that Classic, and he wins by head over Lookin at Lucky. Well, it sounds like they are dead set against not coming back... but who knows. If he runs huge or even wins in Dubai, that might change their plans a bit. · 430 days ago ·

  • medlocke · I think a new era had began for the Dubai World Cup in 2010 at Meydan. What happened in 2010, I fear, will now be likely in many Dubai World Cup's to follow. Horses that show up early for the carnival and get two or three run's under their belt on Meydan's tapeta surface will be more of a factor in deciding the outcome of the Dubai World Cup than horses that ship all the way to Dubai for just that one race. Take last year's DWC for example. Gloria De Campeao, Lizard's Desire, and Allybar ran #1,2, 3. All three of those horses showed up at the beginning of the carnival and ran well in handicaps prior to DWC night. Gio Ponti's 4th place finish, and Mastery's 5th place finish were best among the shippers. I personally think this year is likely to be very much the same. Mike De Kock already has 3 likely starters for the DWC that are burning the tapeta up. Bold Silvano, winner of the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 2, Musir, 2nd in the Firebreak Stakes and winner of last year's UAE 2000 Guineas and Derby, and Golden Sword who has one win and one place at this year's carnival. Then there's Godolphin's Mendip. Who won the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 1, and took 2 races on the tapeta last season. He really look's the kind of horse that could be a big player in this year's DWC to me. Gitano Hernando finished 6th in last year's DWC, and 5th in this year's Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 2. But he's had troubled trips in both races, and is an outstanding synthetic surface horse. That's why I believe Gio Ponti's connection's should already have him in Dubai preparing to prep in the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3 instead of in the U.S. prepping on turf. JMO. · 465 days ago ·
