kay.robinett · He's been getting some pretty good offspring with smaller books of generally less accomplished mares than another stallion who went to stud at about the same time in Bernardini (who is obviously a very good stallion, but has been supported by a lot better grade of mares). Given the difference in money to breed to the two of them, $20,000 could actually be considered a bit of a bargain. Flower Alley retired sound and is a Grade I winner and placer at 10 furlongs - two more things to take into consideration. · 193 days ago ·

kay.robinett · yes, they can REALLY float up and down from year to year depending on how a particular stallion's offspring have been doing on the track lately. In Curlin's case it might be a bit premature to rule out any top class offspring in his first crop, as he himself did not race until he turned three. · 193 days ago ·

From what I have been told his fee has been dropped to $4000 and he was only bred to nine mares last spring. he is another that I would think would have slower maturing distance loving offspring - which of course is the opposite of what many breeders want. Yet I would hope he will be given a better chance. perhaps his daughters will carry his class and stamina into the breeding shed for their offspring... · 193 days ago ·

DipakRoy · I'll Have Another have very decent pedigree, it attracted me when i saw his run in the Santa Anita Derby beating Creative Cause, then i started to study his pedigree very deeply and found out that this horse has a very good chance to win the Kentucky Derby, so that was my 1st selection, then when i saw Mr. Bob Baffert horse Bodemeister in Arkansas Derby cantering way of winning, i was convinced that the Kentucky Derby will be wo by California Horse , either by Bodemeister or I'll Have Another, so i ignored all other horses for the Kentucky Derby and select Bodemeister, I'll Have Another and bet both of them in the derby, and select Dullahan, Creative Cause, Union Rags and Gemologist in my Trifecta and Superfecta, so i kept Bodemeister and I'll Have Another on the top and the rest i boxed them , i got the Trifecta but i did,nt get the Superfecta, since I'll Have Another won the derby , i watched the derby video again and again and determined that I'll Have Another will win the Preakness, so i did the same thing in the Preakness except this time I put I'll Have Another only on the top and Bodemeister,Creative Cause, Teeth of The Dog and Zetterholm were boxed for Trifecta and superfaecta , i got the win, Trifecta and Superfecta, this time i put single win $1000.00 on I'll Have Another, but for Belmont Stakes i was sure that I'll Have Another has'nt got the pedigree to stay Belmont distance, so i select Paynter, Dullahan and Union Rags, i put single bet on Paynter and union Rags, i did,nt got the Trifecta and Superfecta because of my own mistakes, i intially put Atigan in my selection and i bet the Trifecta and Superfecta , but later i changed the ticket to take out Atigan and put Unstoppable U, so i lost the Trifecta and Superfecta by my own wrong judgement, in my opinion I'll Have Another is very good for 1-1/4 miles, he might not stay 1-1/2 miles, so i am very skeptical about that. · 335 days ago ·

The problems with Flower Alley are that (1) his outstanding sire is still young and healthy and producing offspring and (2) he was a late maturing three year old whose best distance was 10 furlongs. So the people with the best mares (and money) who want Distorted Humor blood have been sending their mares to Distorted Humor and the breed for sales club usually do not send their mares to late maturing stayers. In an earlier age when many breeders bred to race and did not mind waiting for a three year old to mature and wanted some stamina, Flower Alley would have had a much better chance at being a top stud. Now multiply the Flower Alley issues for I'll Have Another as you now have three generations of stallions for the breeders to choose from, with the younger father son combo both being late maturing stayers. Since so much of the breeding these days centers around precocious two year old speed rather than a quality staying three year old I can see I'll Have Another having trouble getting mares. It's a true shame. I hope we do not get a Sunday Silence scenario where a nice young classic winning stallion gets shipped overseas and becomes a breed changing stallion! · 334 days ago ·

I am amazed that the fastest horse in our lifetime is represented by so little cross-breeding. By fastest, I mean over a distance, but Secretariat also put up some excellent speed figures at shorter distances as well. When Canadian Bound sold for an astronomical figure and then did not race, people complained Secretariat was no good at stud. It could be that some of his greatest attributes were recessive and would not be reproduced without more cross-breeding. Since fourty years have passed there has been little attempt to do so. Ideally no inbreeding would ever take place, as the most successful method of breeding is by crossing lines or strains of the Thoroughbred. TBDF, I know cocoa has touched on this subject, and I have numerous times, and really, it doesn't bother me so much anymore, BUT, here goes: If a human dad has a baby with his new wife, that baby is his older kids' half-sibling, but in Thoroughbred horse world, horses must have the same dam to be considered half-siblings(of course with the same sire and dam, full siblings). I just think the field was subpar, Bodemeister is one of the best of the crop but he still can't run in that many graded stakes in that little time against that good horses that fast. I think these 7f and mile stakes are perfect for him. You made an excellent point about the impact of having a TC winner, which I know is something very rare and special, but I hadn't realized how much it would mean to revitalize the sport from the fans' perspective, until I have been reading, since the Preakness, the comments supporting IHA's TC bid, even though not many picked him to win the Derby. The fans are starving for a TC winner. Maybe the ones who have never witnessed one more so than others who have. I think the horses just communicate you're in my way, or let's eat now, etc. but nice to see champion Lava Man with IHA. icyhotboo · I was kind of thinking maybe Shackleford watched I'll Have Another run down Bodemeister in the Preakness and thought "I'll try that." Comparing the two performances Shackleford ran a fast mile on the fastest track in the world holding off Possibly the best dirt miler of today. However IHA ran down a horse who still had a lot left in the tank in Bodemeister and towards the end of the year I believe Caleb's Posse and Shackleford will have to contend with the blazing speed of Bodemeister who even as a 3yo may be the fastest dirt miler racing now.IHA with just a decent trip will triple up, he farther he goes the stronger he seems to get. With that 3 length lead and having it all his own way on the lead what other horse running today could have run him down.Watch the Preakness again, "That was a moment sublime." Floridaf · I do have a lot of love for Shackleford, Mary Z., but it's hard not to fall in love with him once you meet him. He is a horse that demands both your attention and your admiration. I think you make a very good point about how those of us that have never witnessed a TC are the ones clamoring for one the most. It would be almost another 10 years after Affirmed's TC before I was born, so all I have seen have been the near misses. Icy, you do not have to agree with me all the time. You are not the only one that thinks I may be reaching a bit when I say Shack could be a good mentor for IHA. It's simply my opinion. tktile · Am I the only 1 fed up with the BSF's. They expalin them as 120's as the top stakes horses. Yet I'll Have Another runs almost as fast as Big Brown and gets scored 8 points lower. I'm tossing the BSF on that race and say that the top 4 horses in the Derby are all monsters and if you see one of the top 10 in a lower stake you should bury them because their speed figure is off by 6-8 pts from where it should be. IHA is one of the best 3yos in the country, but unlike the TC winners that I remember, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed, IHA wasn't talked about, at age 2, as being capable of winning the TC. So, that would go against history for one with such high odds in the Derby to take the TC. Besides, CC has a great shot at taking the middle leg, with less traffic to navigate, and he should be much closer up, not 10L back. · 376 days ago ·
