Acorn Stakes, Anyone?
With I’ll Have Another and the Triple Crown garnering so much attention in horse racing, we should remember that the New York Triple Tiara for three year-old fillies kicks off on Memorial Day at Belmont Park with the Acorn Stakes (G1).

What a wonderful history the Acorn has ... I'm still a little disappointed Ski Goggle knocked Princess Rooney from the ranks from the unbeaten in the '83 Acorn.

I like the Princess best right now, but watch out for Summer Applause. She looked good in the late stages of the Fair Grounds Oaks.

Summer Applause is still my top Oaks pick. The recent loss is easily forgivable; she might not even know she lost; yes I said that. I like her running style; comes from behind, but not a dead closer and versatile, can be closer up, and even won once wire to wire on the lead. She's had all very good races after her unimpressive maiden race at Woodbine, with imo, her 4th. and 6th. races two of the best, even though she did not win those. Already working out very well at Churchill.

@BrianZ - So do I, it's a tie between her and Grace Hall for me right now. I like Summer Applause as well and I think she'll appreciate the extra furlong in the Oaks, but I don't think the competition she's been facing is extremely high calibur with the exception of Believe You Can.

@Mary - I agree Mary, and I think she's one of the fillies that will benefit from all the speed in the race this year. She's never run a bad race yet and the Fair Grounds Oaks effort was exceptional.

This should be another very competative race, just like the KY Derby. I think Summer Applause has a very good chance to win the Oaks & I do believe we will see another jockey aboard in the Oaks.

What a great group of fillies. Grace Hall was SO impressive in her last race, but then there is Baffert. Could he take down the Oaks/Derby Double?

@Andy - Baffert is in a dream spot right now with Princess Arabella, Mamma Kimbo and Eden's Moon, and that's just the fillies! I agree, Grace Hall looked amazing and won with very little effort.

For my money's worth I think Grace Hall will have a really nice return performance and return to the top of the crop. Eden's Moon looks like she should just get better as the distance stretches out. Ii am very curious to see what Zo Impressive can do in the Gulfstream Oaks and even a little intrigued by Small Kitchen in the Fair Grounds Oaks.

You made very good points about Yara and Zo Impressive in regards to some of their previous races. Personally, I think Disposablepleasure is much better than her 4th place Davona Dale finish would suggest; just look back to her gritty win in the Demoiselle. I believe the match-up between Eden's Moon and Reneesgotzip will be the best of the weekend in the 3-yo filly division. Maybe we can get another BL/HDG rivalry going. Great analysis, Brian!

Thanks Ashley! I agree with regard to Disposablepleasure. The Davona Dale was her first race of the year and I think she will benefit off that effort, but I don't think she'll get to the top two. All of these fillies are coming into the races looking really good.

Grace Hall Preferred in Gulfstream Park Oaks
Grace Hall, 2nd to Yara as the 4-5 favorite in the Davona Dale (G2) on Feb 25, will try to turn the tables on that rival in Saturday's Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2).
