What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Zarkava...

Zarkava foaled a colt by Redoute's Choice on Monday, here is a pic and some info on the new arrivals and breeding plans for the Aga Khan's outstanding broodmare band - http://www.agakhanstuds.com/news/news_display.asp?NewsId=791
Havre de Grace showed the world once again that in thoroughbred horse racing these days, it’s a girl's world...Read More

  • Mary Z. · Hi kaitlin. So, I do try to take Mondays off, but I still read along, however this one has me pensively half-smiling. First, I do wonder how these old threads are found. Sleuth that I am, I can only go back so far and then the latest comments appear, without my being able to access older threads. Next thought, nice to see that Flat Out has improved in the public opinion polls(p.s., that is extra heavy on sarcasm, because I thought he was very good when Havre de Grace beat him in the Woodward. Next, funny how Royal Delta has faced males twice, and at the World's richest race. First try, understandable excuses, this year, even after the BCLC run, I was surprised to see him try to have her wire at 10f on tapeta, but that's not really my point. My point is that the connections only sent her believing she'd run quite well even have a chance at winning. Why then no open company races here, in the U.S. You'd have to ask them. My opinion? As for last year, why the BCLC repeat over trying the BCC itself? The Personal Ensign mistake ride, coupled with the place in her first start of the year. So, she probably would have had to win, not just place to be considered for HOTY. Not only that, but with this mare you have the situation that her broodmare career is set, not only that, but you have to think about how certain races might set up or not. I mean, in another BCC at Santa Anita, you'll have really tough , fast males that can handle the 10f, and by those I mean Dude and Fort Larned. If the Game On Dude that was favored last year gets a great start, and he and Fort Larned duel, you then have the closers, Royal Delta's stablemates, to come charging home. Let's take the JCGC over the Beldame. Okay, first her roomie, Flat Out will be going for the three-peat. Yes, different owners, but still a bit of a conflict there for the trainer. Not only that, but say she won at Belmont going 10f against males? Then the pressure to pick the Classic would be huge. Woodward over Personal Ensign (I haven't checked the dates)? I hope she would earn a touch more respect if she beat Flat Out in that than Havre De Grace did, although Havre de Grace was a fantastic, fast racing filly, if anyone didn't miss enjoying her at the time. Finally, another thing is, contrary to how perhaps I portray it, I'm not her only fan, it's just that she doesn't have toys of herself yet, and I suspect her fans are rather on the quiet side. · 268 days ago ·
  • kaitlinefree1 · i was on Makybe Diva's page & found this thread. but i agree that Royal Delta should face the boys. winning against the girls is a been there done that kind of thing. i want to see them challenge her. i think shes good enough. i recently just came to really like her. · 268 days ago ·
Was bred to Redoute's Choice, along with some other blueblood book of mares including Born Gold (Goldikova's dam)

  • jonquil · I'd rather see her go to Fame and Glory. Or better yet, why not try War Front? TBH I'd much prefer to see her foals run first. Has anyone heard anything about her 3 yo filly? · 270 days ago ·
  • jonquil · Fame and Glory rather than So You Think, that is. · 270 days ago ·
Zarkasha, dam of Zarkava, will be bred to New Approach in 2013
Returning to the scene of his most notable triumph, Zarkandar rekindled his hopes of Champion Hurdle glory with a determined, gutsy display in the International Hurdle, in holding off persistent effort of the returning Grandouet to come home victorious by an extending two lengths. Read More
  • BrianZipse · Judging from the photo on Zarkava's HRN page ... I have a feeling she would have dominated in this game as well! · 485 days ago ·
I honestly think the pictures on the top right is one of the most amazing images I have ever seen of a thoroughbred in full flight!

  • ILuvTurfRacing · @KyOaksRunner, Just today I watched the replay of 2007 G1 Prix Marcel Boussac. That photo of Zarkava was taken when she jumped a shadow on the track at Longchamp about 25 or 30 meters from the wire. Nearly jolted Christophe Soumillon off of her back when she landed. Brought back of memories of Dayjur in the 1990 BC Sprint. He was easily the fastest sprinter in the world at that time. Had the race won and coming up to the wire he jumped shadow on the track, lost his stride, and ended up getting passed by Safely Kept just as they crossed the wire. · 589 days ago ·
  • icyhotboo · @ILuvTurfRacing, what is your opinion of her place in the history of turf racing? Watching her on U-Tube for hrs got me hooked on turf racing. Your thoughts would be of interest to me if you don't mind. · 589 days ago ·
They say perfection is unattainable, and as a practicing golf instructor, I’m inclined to agree, but maybe even if this is the sad reality for the human race, we can still strive to find perfection within our world. Perhaps a glimpse of our unattainable will be in store for us tonight when Black Cav...Read More

  • New York Vinnie · If you think that ten races is ignorant then just look at the list by Bloodhorse. As far as I can gather there is just one horse, #94 Artful (1902) that raced less than ten races. All other horses raced at least ten races. · 782 days ago ·
  • RuffianQueenOfRacing · Hey, im just trying to get my head around you saying Landaluce was great, and then you said no horse that races in under 10 races is great. Yeah she died young, but doesnt mean she could not have raced more, if she was so great, i mean im just going off what are saying sooo · 782 days ago ·
I spent the last two hours watching her videos. I don't follow European racing but I know a great one when I see it and I saw it for two hours this morning. She is breathtaking!

  • footlick · I agree icyhotboo, she was breathtaking · 943 days ago ·
  • medlocke · @icyhotboo, Zarkava was incredible!! She only raced 7 times in her career, but won all 7 races!! When you've got a filly with the kind of speed to leave Goldikova looking flat footed the way Zarkava did in the 08' French 1000 Guineas and Prix De Diane(French Oaks), then you know she's special!! After beating Goldikova twice, she next beat multiple G1 winning mare, and 2010 Sheema Classic winner, Dar Re Mi, the 08' Prix Vermeille. Then her finest hour was beating a very good Arc field that consisted of all boys in the 08' Arc. I always wished that Zarkava would've been brought back to race again as a 4yr.old. I felt much the same about Sea The Stars when he was retired at the end of his 3yr.old season, too. · 943 days ago ·
That picture in the top right corner truly shows what kind of racing monster Zarkava is.
Should have started a jumps career would have been great at it.
Zarkava Should be at the TOP of this list. Not one filly on this list from the last 30 years or more would have even come close to this Freak. Yes I have been watching, and in the business for over 30 yrs.

  • TimSmith · That win Defined R.As career. If she lost that race she A) wouldnt have been H.O.Y B) wouldnt have gone down as one of the greatest seasons ever. Calvin didnt kill her he just rode the crap out of her and made a LEGEND. · 1026 days ago ·
  • icyhotboo · he set her up so that every horse had the opportunity to take their best shot at their best time like he's done before with her.BTW Calvin hasn't gotten a qualitty horse since. They gave him SS who they never dreamed had a chance and it was a muddy track..... · 1026 days ago ·
i LOVE how she leaped after crossing the line in the prix marcel! it looked so cute!
I must say that finding this site is one of the greatest finds of my life. I know, dramatic, but you’ll learn it is just the way I am. This site has given me the opportunity to talk racing with people that actually want to hear it. I have a chance to ‘meet up’ with people that feel the same way I do...Read More

  • ruffian75 · Thanks, RaTalk Girl. Since you enjoyed that one, this was of the greatest come-from-behind races I had ever seen. Check out how far back Concern is in this race. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CfSJn3tI8M. Once again, I hope you enjoy it. · 1035 days ago ·
  • RaTalk_Girl · Great race ruffian, couldn't even follow him because he was so far back. Love those kind of races :) · 1035 days ago ·
Zarkava at #92...wow, Guess I am not surprised that all the American Fillies are up top the list, forget the fact that I cannot even find Makybe Diva in the top 200????.
  • arazi · This is really a North American list. · 1045 days ago ·
  • dubby30 · Its a thoughtless American list with no respect to the rest of the world or runnres like Personal Ensign, winning colors and others that were asked to run hard against the best available. · 1043 days ago ·
Zarkava is hands down the greatest Filly or Mare to grace the track in the last 30 years, Zarkava won from 5f-12f with the greatest of ease, taking down the boys at the European classic distance. If you've not seen video of her Arc win please take a gander and explain which of any horses that have ever run other than Ruffian in the World could have defeated this filly. She may have had trouble catching the 2009 form of Rachel Alexandra and the Zenyatta that we knew in 2008 would have given her a nice breeze, but In my opinion, no horse male or female could have defeated this horse, as seen by he beating Goldikova a couple of times and look wat a machine Goldikova is now.
Rags to Riches beats Curlin in the Test of Champions. Zarkava wins the Arc. Rachel Alexandra wins the Preakness, Haskell, and Woodward. Vodka wins the Japan Cup. Zenyatta comes within inches of two consecutive Breeders' Cup Classics. Goldikova takes home three straight BC Miles. The list of fantasti...Read More
