  • Mike in SB · I remember that it looked like Wild Again came out and Gate Dancer came in and both squeezed Slew o'Gold. I remember thinking they were going to take down both Gate Dancer and Wild Again and make the big favorite the winner. But they made the right decision. The most amazing thing about that first Breeders Cup was that you could get a good seat for 10 dollars. · 98 days ago ·

  • jay s. · I think the stewards made the right decision, but would've been fine had they left Gate Dancer 2nd. I do think the first Gate Dancer contact was Slew 'O Gold knocking Gate Dancer's rear end hard to the outside, forcing him to come in towards Slew 'O Gold. · 98 days ago ·

In my life as a horse racing fan, the Meadowlands was a special place. For years a very good racing buddy and I went to the races at the Meadowlands every Thursday night. It meant late nights and long drives along the New Jersey Turnpike, but the racing was good and by today’s standards the crowds w...Read More

  • shadowno · The level playing field not my comment, but with regard to the surface, geography played a part given the tracks proximity to the San Gabriel mountains. Heavy rains and flooding/runoff from the mountains washed away part of the pro-ride surface in 2009-10 costing them racing days and $$$$$. Also, I don't believe it ever drained as advertised like the cushion track that cost multiple dates in 08.. It was a safer surface for horses, by reported fatilities, signifigantly so, even factoring in the lost days. But here (probably even more here given the state budget and miserable economy), as everywhere $$$$ talks and a closed track can't produce revenue. And with Awesome Gem that 1 win happened to be the Hollywood Gold Cup and he produced clutch efforts in the Pacific Classic, San Antonio and Goodwood in over synthetics so I'll give him credit for his ability to handle prety much anything thrown his way. · 533 days ago ·

  • footlick · the other problem with the Pro-Ride surface at Santa Anita was that they never cleared out the former surfaces completely when installing and then reinstalling the Pro-Ride, so it was never a pure surface to begin with and that added to it's instability · 533 days ago ·

Before he ever ran, Slew O’ Gold was destined for greatness. He was a great looking son of the incomparable Seattle Slew and his dam was Alluvial, a daughter of Buckpasser who had already produced the top runner, Coastal. If Wild Again hadn't landed with a trainer like Vincent Timphony, Timphony would have landed with Wild Again. They were a match made in Utopia, this well-bred but wrong-side-of-the-tracks colt and a trainer who had spent a lifetime looking for the Big Horse. Together with their jockey, Pat Day, they...Read More

  • humphrey · The most telling race was the Juvenille when Spend A Buck almost won at a mile after setting a FASTER 6 furlong time than Ellio the sprint winner that day. • humphrey · Gate Dancer had loads of talent and not a brain in his head. Trivia question: Which horse of recent times was DQ's in the Kentucky Derby??? Gate Dancer who ran in a shadow roll, a hood to cover his ears which were full of cotton, and a special bit and STILL, he could not run straight. Runs strainght and you might have had a two time BC Classic winner in that crazy lug. · 889 days ago ·
