What the Nation is saying about Wigmore Hall...

When the very best of thoroughbreds compete over long distances of dirt or grass for Grade 1 titles, the spectacle is sure worth watching. On Sunday, a field of 11 will go to post in the 75th running of the Grade 1 $1.5 million Pattison Canadian International, a 1 1/2 mile trip around Woodbine's E.P...Read More

Joshua Tree, piloted by renowned jockey Frankie Dettori, made every pole a winning one, taking Canada’s richest horse race, the Grade 1, $1.5 million Pattison Canadian International, by a half-length over a charging Dandino, Sunday at Woodbine.Read More
  • ILuvTurfRacing · Joshua Tree quite obviously loves the turf course at Woodbine. 2 wins and a 2nd in the past 3 running's of the Canadian International shows that. His form coming in was rock solid as well, having scored a win, a 2nd, and a 3rd at G2 level in 3 races prior to coming to Woodbine. He was always going to be at least one of the top 2 or 3 horses to beat in this race. With that being said, Dandino in 2nd was the real eye catcher of the race to me. He forced to go very wide through the stretch, but Jim Crowley had him absolutely motoring, cutting back Joshua Tree's lead with every stride. So much so that if the race had been another 10 yards, if even that, Jim Crowley would've likely stolen Frankie Dettori's thunder on the day, IMO. I think Imperial Monarch and Reliable Man would've both been seen to much better effect in the race if there had bin a bit more cut in the ground on the day. They're both better when the turf is relatively soft as apposed to being good to firm. · 248 days ago ·

  • ILuvTurfRacing · Been awhile between drinks for Wigmore Hall, but it's good to see him back in the winners circle again. It's kind ironic that races at 10 to 10-1/2f have always been believed to be Wigmore Hall's best trip. Yet the both of the G1 wins he has now on his resume' have come at 12f. That must be the High Chaparral coming out in him, LOL. · 276 days ago ·

  • ILuvTurfRacing · Cirrus Des Aiigles just didn't win the G1 Prix Ganay. He left a very classy filly that was previously unbeaten in stakes company in Giofra absolutely for dead by some 8 lengths. This horse just keeps getting better and better with age!! I've always thought it was too bad that CDA is gelded, because he'd be a force to be reckoned with if he was eligible to run in the Arc, IMO. · 416 days ago ·

  • Rossington · There's really no getting around this point in 2011. The middle distance turf horses that have been shipping over to North America from Europe are just superior to the middle distance turf horses from North America themselves. That's not a knock, just a fact. Cape Blanco, Treasure Beach, Stacelita, and now Wigmore Hall have all shipped to North America and won at least one major G1 turf stakes. In the case of Cape Blanco, he's shipping back from Ireland for a crack at his third G1 turf stakes in North America. For as good as Acclamation has been carrying the middle distance turf banner for America this season. It's difficult to see past one of the European contenders winning this year's BC Turf. · 639 days ago ·

High praise to Jamie Spencer!! He couldn't have ridden Wigmore Hall anymore perfectly in today's G1 Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine if he tried? He put Wigmore Hall right on the rail, which is where you definitely want to be at Woodbine, and was very patient with him. Didn't ask him to go and win his race until inside the final 2f. The big thing, IMO, for trainer Michael Bell to take out of this race today from Wigmore Hall is not so much that it was his first ever G1 win. But that he's now proven that he can stay and win over the 12f trip. As today was the first time that Wigmore Hall had ever raced beyond 10f in his career. But being the son of 2-time BC Turf winner, High Chaparral, I felt like it was a given he'd get the trip!! I'd say this win now put's Wigmore Hall squarely into the BC Turf conversation. A race that's shaping up to potentially be a very deep race, loaded with European talent this year!! Congrats to Wigmore Hall!! I've been a fan of this horse since he was back running at handicap level in the UK early in his career!!
