Reunited with jockey Joel Rosario and taking full advantage of a quick pace, Leroy’s Dynameaux finished strongly to win the $100,000 Will Rogers Stakes on Sunday at Hollywood Park. Dismissed at 13-1 in his debut in a graded race, the 3-year-old son of Leroidesanimaux and the Dynaformer mare Dyna Pe...Read More
Updated 2010 Kentucky Derby Graded Stakes earnings as of March 31, 2010. Key contenders Eskendereya, Caracortado, Schoolyard Dreams, Drosselmeyer, Jackson Bend and Pleasant Prince will all likely require more graded stakes earnings to get in. Read More
  • bband · It seems like more horses will get shut out this year than in recent memory. What will be interesting is if Pletcher starts all 7 horses, fully knowing the lesser ones can't compete with his top runners. But what it will do is keep several real contenders out of the race. · 679 days ago ·

The results of the Wood Memorial, Santa Anita Derby and Illinois Derby shuffled the order of the Kentucky Derby graded earnings a bit. Read More
  • Rossington · As well as he's raced over every conventional dirt track that he's ever ran, I still find it hard to believe that Rick Dutrow isn't going to take a shot at the 2010 Kentucky Derby with D' Funnybone. I really think it's a distance question with Dutrow. But that wouldn't deter me from taking a shot with this colt, because none of the incoming contenders will be proven yet at 1-1/4. • Rossington · Boy, that Florida Stallion Series sure must not have paid very well for Jackson Bend to be so far down the list in Graded earnings. I also thought D' Funnybone with win's in the Saratoga Special, the Futurity Stakes, the Hutcheson Stakes, and the Swale Stakes, plus a place effort in the Frank Gomez Stakes would have acquired more money in Graded earnings than his total suggest. · 675 days ago ·

Right now my list shows 8 Kentucky Derby contenders who are finished prepping and awaiting the first Saturday in May with $200,000 or more in graded stakes earnings, and another 7 with a final prep to go and already who have topped $200,000. With 6 slots available between now and Derby Day worth $20...Read More
Lookin at Lucky drew post 7 of 10, and was made the 4-5 favorite for Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita Derby over stakes winners Sidney's Candy, Caracortado and Alphie's Bet. Read More
  • Medlocke · I wouldn't be surprise to see a big run from Caracortado in this race. But, as I've said before, unless he just comes out and circles Santa Anita backwards, not Caracortado, not Sidney's Candy, or any other 3yr.old for that matter, is going to beat Lookin At Lucky on the Santa Anita poly-track. Looking back to November, and seeing his form now, I think it was a fluke that Vale of York was able to get up to beat him in the 09' B.C. Juvenile. Dirt for Lookin At Lucky, however, is another story. Although he answered the dirt question by winning the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn, that wasn't what you would really call an overpowering field, IMO, and he was just barely able to get up for that win. At Churchill Downs, LAL is going to be facing several proven dirt running 3yr.olds, that unless he improves on dirt off of the Rebel, my be able to get him. That's why, IMO, Bob Baffert would have been much better served to have left LAL at Oaklawn, and a run in the Arkansas Derby, to get another conventional dirt start under his belt. I really think that would serve him better than another poly-track start at Santa Anita going into Churchill Downs next. TJMO. · 679 days ago ·

Bob Baffert said late Sunday morning he is "90 percent sure" that multiple Grade 1 victor LOOKIN AT LUCKY (Smart Strike) will run in Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1) rather the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park on April 10. The champion colt worked six furlongs on Santa Anita'...Read More
  • Rossington · I'm certainly not qualified to second guess Bob Baffert. But, IMO, another race at Oaklawn, on conventional dirt, in the Arkansas Derby would be much more beneficial to Lookin At Lucky heading to Churchill Downs than another run on the synthetic track at Santa Anita. I guess maybe Baffert is thinking Lookin At Lucky will be extremely tough to beat at Santa Anita, and a win in the S.A. Derby would give Lucky a bunch of confidence going to Kentucky. Otherwise, why not let your 3yr.old star get some more dirt track experience? TJMO. · 682 days ago ·

  • cigar · I would agree, but once you've proven the horse handles dirt, why bother with the ship when you can walk over for a decent amount of coin? I would keep him home as well, and have the next ship be to Churchill. · 682 days ago ·

The prospective Santa Anita Derby (G1) field grew by one Sunday with the announcement that dual allowance winner SKIPSHOT (Skip Away) would invade from the Bay Area to run in the $750,000 race going 1 1/8 miles on April 3. Trainer Bob Baffert said Lookin At Lucky's response to training will determine whether the colt will run in the Santa Anita Derby or wait a week for Arkansas Derby.A determined winner of the Rebel Stakes (gr. Turns out that Smart Strike colts CAN win big races on synthetics and dirt, ala LOOKIN AT LUCKY in last Saturday's G2 Rebel at Oaklawn.
