Whirlaway as a Yearling. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=575874069169027&set=a.306750466081390.68483.305963939493376&type=1&theater
Just got done watching a short Documentary on Whirlaway and he was quite the character. Loved that it took the touch of a genious (Eddie Arcaro) to get Whirlaway to run his best, and the way they trained him for the derby was also a interesting. They would have two horses on the inside, one in the 3 path and one in the two path and Mr.Jones would have Eddie send Whirlaway down in between those two to get him through the turn without drifting out wide like he loved to do. It worked, and Whirlaway set the Derby record. Great horse, great Trainer, and great Jockey. The soldiers horse. Even had a bomber named after him :)

I have recently been studying the Top 250. I am done studying about 15 horses.... Now, will somebody tell me what is so good about this horse, and what he accomplished? I see he won the Belmont and KY Derby.

  • travel_vic · some medications do not have effects that show up right away. Take the case of diethylstilbesterol after WWII. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/DES where it was the daughters some 25 years later who developed cancer. Lasix and bute could be that way as well we just don't know yet. · 962 days ago
  • cocoa2 · There were more 2 year old races too and a good horse at 2 meant something · 962 days ago
Okay he is waaayyy underrated 22!! are you kidding me!! he should be at least 10!! all of the older triple crown winners are underrated!!
  • LAZMANNICK · Whirlaway is one of those horse that will always get short changed when it comes to comparisons against N/A’s best horses. He was considered the 26th best on the Bloodhrose’s all time list of the 20th Century. He won 32 races lifetime, but he also lost 28 times so perhaps this is one reason that he wasn’t rated higher. However he did manage 15 seconds and 9 thirds meaning that he was in the top three in an incredible 56 of 60 races. In his three year old year he ran 20 times, won 13 with 5 seconds and 2 thirds and was asked to carry 130 lbs. in both the Saranac Handicap for three year olds as well as the Travers, both of which he won. When he was older he won the Pimlico Special in a walkover because no trainer wanted to challenge him. He is also credited with being the horse that helped turn Calumet Farm into thoroughbred juggernaut. · 1084 days ago
  • Buckpasser · Couldn't agree more CC and LAZ about Whirlaway. Great race horse poor sire and by Blenheim II not by Bull Lea the great Calumet foundation sire · 1084 days ago
He was considered crazy, stupid and fast....He always ran to the outside rail and would still win!!! of corse they fixed in the triple crown races but he was a great horse!!
One of Calumet's top runners!
