  • Capper · I'm leaning toward Creative Cause, with all that trouble & the wide trip, he was right there at the wire. Plus, he'll easily be triple the odds of Bodemeister/I'll Have Another. With all the love Went the Day Well is getting, he may drift up to 10-1. · 11 days ago ·

Let me get this out of the way right now … I’m not a big bettor. That probably will come as a surprise to many of you, as closely as I follow the sport, and as often as I write about it, but it’s true. I live, eat, and breathe thoroughbred horse racing, but wagering is only one part of the game I en...Read More

  • icyhotboo · IHA, can't get off after two big scores with him. Should get 3/1-7/2. That's a lot for this one. If CC gets a decent trip he wouldn't surprise me, had a hard dreby trip but he's one of the three contenders along with Bodemeister. These three are so far superior to the rest but IHA is my selection to win. · 9 days ago ·

  • AmbitiousD · Just looking at the BSF numbers, Bode bounced in the Derby. We all know BSF are not handicapping doctrine, but I found it ironic that Beyer pace handicapped the entire race, and didn't even mention the use of BSF. Good article from Beyer though. · 9 days ago ·

  • switch360 · In this article he says that IHA wont get a dream trip every time if the derby is run a hundred times, but reckons Bodemiester will win many times,is that assuming Bode would get the same trip every time while other horses races vary????,i think its a bit biased. But i agree with Bode as the preakness winner · 9 days ago ·

OK, we’re here—my final blog and Preakness picks. Two years ago I gave out the winning superfecta; last year I picked the horse that finished dead last. No promises here, just my best educated guess and a fond farewell. On paper, this looks like a chalky Preakness; hopefully not as chalky as 2007 wh...Read More

  • icyhotboo · Bodemeister ran against a slight bias in the KD, set impossible fractions and still finished 2nd in only his 5th lifetime start. I never understood the logic of "trying to beat the winner" when you estimate his chance at 50% or above as is the case here. Only IHA has any chance against B here and he'll have to show that gear he hasn't yet shown. As for CC probably one the best 3yo of this crop, should have no trouble getting 2nd or 3rd as WTDW put in a derby run against horses that were coming back "fast" and he had a fairly clean run as was not the case with CC who has already faced IHA while at the top of his game in a clean run was virtually a dead heat the difference now being this is IHAs 7th lifetime start and is much improved is CC? In any case Bodemeister without any other speed and making his 6th lifetime start not his 3rd without major complications and surviving BBs arduous training regimen this is a gimme, at least on paper. GL to all. · 9 days ago ·

  • saratoga john · Having watched the race several times since Derby Day, Guiterrez made two key moves with I'll Have Another. Both occurred at the top of the stretch. One, was at the start, and the other move at the turn for home. The first was getting him out of that 2nd gate to a wide-open space through the stretch so he could relax the horse through the clubhouse turn. The second, was pretty remarkable since this was Guiterrez' first time in a race of this magnitude. It was the key move as they spun off the turn at the 1/4 pole. Drifting out in the middle of the track with Went the Day Well & Dullahan to his outside, the key move was sliding him back inside to make his run at Bodemeister. The closers were still commited the the 7 & 8 paths and stayed out there to launch, but it was too late. Guiterrez was already gone and taking a bead on the game Bodemeister. Bodemeisters' ability to burn those fractions and still be running at the end was quite impressive. That's why I'm taking Bodemeister in the shorter Preakness. · 11 days ago ·

Bottom line is, Derby Day just wasn’t their day. For a not-insignificant number of Preakness winners, the disappointment of their efforts two weeks beforehand in the Kentucky Derby sometimes has been difficult to rationalize.
