THE INTRIGUE - The 140th running of the Travers didn’t feature Rachel Alexandra, who most believed at the time was the best 3YO of either sex, but the winners of the Belmont, Florida Derby, Lane’s End, Jim Dandy, Dwyer, Peter Pan, and Barbaro made up the field of seven.Read More

A win or second-place effort in your final Breeders' Cup prep is reason enough to move on to the big event. But when you run fifth, well . . . Read More
  • medlocke · Even finishing 5th, Beautician is a decent 2yr.old filly with some promise. She'll probably improve with age. But in the juvenile filly division this year at the Breeders Cup, if she brings her "A" game to the table, I don't look for any of them to catch "Hot Dixie Chick." She has excellent tactical speed and can really open up when called on. She run's very smart, more like a 3yr.old than a 2yr.old. · 117 days ago
  • gardenesque1 · Note that Beautician will not have to face Hot Dixie Chick in the Cup because the latter is not going to Santa Anita. According to assistant trainer Scott Blasi, Spinaway (gr. I) winner Hot Dixie Chick will be given some time off and probably will start back at the end of November at Fair Grounds. · 116 days ago
Trainer Todd Pletcher’s track record in the Bourbon Stakes (G3) has been stellar over the past five years with two victories and two runner-up finishes. On Sunday, he may improve on that record when he sends Wertheimer and Frere’s Interactif and two others in the 19th running of the $125,000 event f...Read More

Six others will try and knock the rising Quality Road down as he goes favored in Saturday's Travers Stakes at Saratoga. The field lost Mine That Bird earlier in the week but still boasts the Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird and another rising star in Kensei. Forecasts are saying a wet track is a st...Read More

The Grade 1 Travers Stakes will not have filly sensation Rachel Alexandra, but it is looking like a solid field of eight for the $1 million showcase at Saratoga on August 29th. Read More
This year's Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) is such an odd concoction of grass and synthetic horses and undistinguished older dirt horses it's difficult to make a worthwhile list of potential starters.Read More
Trainer Ian Wilkes was not bothered by the slop Sunday morning and sent Warrior's Reward out for a five-furlong work over the sloppy main track at Saratoga Racecourse with jockey Calvin Borel in the irons as he worked toward the $1-million Shadwell Travers Stakes (gr. I).Read More
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin confirmed Aug. 20 that Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren Jr.'s Charitable Man, third in the Jim Dandy (gr. II), would make his next start in the Shadwell Travers (gr.  Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird had a slow five furlong drill at the Spa on August 17th, and a subsequent exam revealed an entrapped epiglottis. Minor surgery on Tuesday corrected the breathing issue, and he remains possible for the Travers (Aug 29th). He will head back to ...Read More

Said trainer Chip Woolley, "Calvin is in a unique position right now to have a lot of options, but his failure to commit to my horse meant I had to go a different direction." • arazi · Seems like a knucklehead move by Borel's agent to lose Mine That Bird. Yes, the Nafzger/Wilkes barn is Borel's meal ticket... and they gave him Street Sense and several others. But Warrior's Reward is no Derby winner, and you sort of have carte blanche understanding to drop other horses for the Derby winner... so you would think he could have gotten out of this committment. · 222 days ago
  • gberet · Not very smart on Calvin's part. MTB probably wins the W.V. Derby. No way Warrior's Reward beats Quality Road in the J.D. Also heard on HRTV that Charitable Man likely for the J.D. also. I don't care if the N/W barn is his meal ticket or not, where I went to school 1st place share of 750k is beter than no place share of 500k. Apparently he's lost more sense than teeth. I couldn't agree more. Not a very smart move on Calvin's part. Why do you give up the mount that probably wins the W.V. Derby and $750,000 to jump on a mount that even if Warrior's Reward wins makes $500,000 in the Jim Dandy. Because there's no way that Warrior's Reward beats Quality Road in the J.D. Also hearing that Charitable Man going to be in the J.D. Pretty bad when you've lost more sense than teeth. · 221 days ago
