TOO EARLY to know, but if that track does not calm down, it will be very difficult to evaluate an Anita shipper to an eastern course.

Rousing Sermon should like to stretch out, but to me Creative Cause is the best CA colt, and right up there with the best of his age in the nation. Don't forget that he drilled his rivals in the Norfolk.

There doesn't seem to be a single standout like Lookin at Lucky, but the depth is pretty good, looks like a few horses with a good chance to improve and win some big races next year, maybe even the Derby.

CC has yet to face Liaison, Sabercat, Hierro, or SC. CC is probably the most accomplished, with Liaison right there, but on pure talent, SC wins that. Sabercat seems to love distance, so none of these can be counted out.

DH, I would like to know more about the pure talent of Secret Circle (SC, those initials always have my old brain working to figure out which horse?) because Creative Cause has beaten or finished ahead of the best horses in Secret Circle's first two races and I just watched the replay again to remind myself of the quite noticeable drifting in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint by Secret Circle. I would think, given his speed that Secret Circle will stay in sprints, but I see some news that he may be tried in longer races. Do you think so? you mentioned

Secret Circle's pedigree indicates that he may have some distance in him, but two of his dam's 3 wins were in sprints. If he gets the distance, it will probably be from his sire line. So far, though, he looks like he'll do better sprinting.

It's surprising that the SA Derby winner hasn't won at Churchill in 23 years, but a deceiving stat. One of my favorite angles is playing a runner up in Derby prep in the KY Derby. Plus, many SA horses ship out to get a taste of dirt before Derby. I still think Lookin At Lucky was the class of his crop.

With respect to Secret Circle being able to able to go distance; he's be working regularly and as done a couple of recent 6f bullets...the Sam is gong to be an interesting race. I'm keeping my eye on LD as well....

Overall, it really looks like the best future SA Derby we've seen in awhile. So many good ones this time, compared to just 1 or 2 standouts thrown in with others. Creative Cause, Liaison, Secret Circle, Drill, Sabercat, Rousing Sermon, Hierro - now you can throw in Fed Biz after a very impressive maiden win yesterday, and Sky Kingdom's regal pedigree might just peak somewhere down the line. With all those said, it looks much more contentious out in CA than back east, where Hansen and Union Rags seem to be taking the opinionated-cake . Will be interesting to see who Baffert and Assmusen send to Oaklawn, or if others decide to ship to SA, now w/ conventional dirt.

I have always considered the Haskell as a prep for the Travers, the Summer Derby and I guess that Kiaran McLaughlin does to when he said that he will train Rattlesnake Ridge up to the Travers instead of running in the Haskell. Often you get a good horse or two in it but not a lot of depth. This year for sure has to be one of the deepest fields I can recall with most having a legitimate shot of winning the race. One thing that is starting to stand out for me is that many trainers are leaning towards the 9F distance of the Haskell as opposed to the 10F of the Travers. The depth this year suggests that many that will be running in it might be suspect at the 10F distance.

The last few years have gotten deeper and deeper in terms of talent running in the Haskell. Last year was a very good year, so was 2009. 2007 was also a great year for that race too. However, as I said Travers is an awesome race and event. It is the best race of the summer

Will be at the top of stretch to watch this one with my running buddy Pozzouli. We are biased since this track is in our backyard but Travers I believe is the All Star Game and The Haskell is the junior varsity version. There may be a few 3 YO's with some talent is the Haskell but the Summer Derby is always stacked. I've been to both events and although this is anecdotal, I saw more NJ license plates transplanted in the Toga parking than I did NY plates at Monmouth.

Laz, I don't know where I said it was not, in fact in my blog i'm advocating for it. However, you in your first comment said the Haskell lacks much depth and only draws one or two good horses, when it has drawn several deep fields in the last couple years. 07 drew Hard Spund, Curlin, and Any Given Saturday. 09 had several stakes winners including The Preakness and Belmont winners. Last year drew the Derby runner-up, along with both the Preakness winner and second place finisher. My point was the Haskell has proven to draw deep fields, just as the Travers does, but that does not in any way change the fact that the Travers is still the race to win.

The Travers is the greatest race for three year olds, except maybe for the Triple Crown races, and what makes it special is the 1 1/4 mile distance. One of the worst trends in racing today is the shortening of the major races. It seems like every race today is 1 1/8 miles, our champion horses need to prove themselves at the American classic distance of 1 1/4 miles.

DeadHeat……….I’m not trying to argue with you and I’m no saying that you commented one way or another. I just wondered if you had ever heard of anyone calling the Travers Saratoga’s signature race. Regarding the fields for the Haskell. They seem to be getting deeper with talent in the past few years than they used to be and I think that one reason is the 9F distance. I also agree with Mike that the Travers is the greatest race for three year olds outside the Triple Crown. The Haskell to me has always been like a Blue Grass or a Florida Derby or a Wood Memorial, a top G1, but not on the same level as the TC races and the Travers.

I have heard it called that and I most certainly believe in that name. However, I would disagree with you on the level of the Haskell. I would actually liken it to the Preakness, the baby child when standing next to the Derby which has so much age and prestige. While it still draws some wonderful deep and talented fields, it in no way can be called equal to the Derby.

The Preakness is the Race of Champions
It may not possess all the hoopla of the Kentucky Derby, or have the “Test of Champions” nickname like the Belmont Stakes, but make no mistake, it is the middle jewel of the Triple Crown that has become the most important barometer in naming a champion come year’s end in all of American racing. Long...

Since my Preakness picks are up in the air, I may take another look at Mucho Macho Man. The Preakness is my favorite Triple Crown race because that is when I started appreciating horseracing for more than just a gamble. I think she went 8 for 8 that season. ;)

With a Rebel Yell It’s The Factor
Sometimes there is nothing more dangerous than good old fashioned speed, and that is something The Factor has in abundance. Making every pole a winning one, The Factor, under rider Martin Garcia, powered to the lead within the first few strides and rolled to an easy six length score in today’s Rebel...

Two things we found out today: he can run fast at two turns, and, he likes to run fast, regardless of what the field is doing. I'm still a beginner here, but it does remind me of another horse by the name of Secretariat! (Don't laugh!) He did what he did because he wanted to, and it didn't seem to matter what the other runners were doing. The Factor just looks like he is having fun out there, and now it seems he may be able to run all day! Watch out, Uncle Mo....Derby Trail "lite" might not be such a good idea...I really do like Mo, hope he lives up to his hype, but the hysteria is building for just that one horse, and I sense the table being set for a huge letdown. It just feels like he went off like a rocket in his two year old season and now he's coasting, compared to what others are doing. I read somewhere he's not going to be facing a whole lot of competition in the Wood, whereas, in the Fl Derby, he would. Oh, well, all of this is making for a fun Derby season!

Rock solid 103 BSF for the Rebel. The Factor was strong but according to the sheets The Factor and Sway Away were the only fast horses in the race and the latter did not show up. The Factor needs to ration his energy if he expects to handle 10f.

Exactly. That's how you make money in the Derby. It's tough betting with 20 horses, but horses like Conveyance, Sidney's Candy and The Factor help a lot. They help because not only can you toss them out, but their sheer speed can often eliminate a few other speed horses.

I'm sticking with Uncle Mo for my moneys worth right now, he's the fastest sophomore in America right now and rateable. The Factor was really impressive but I don't think he'll be able to hold that kind of dominance in the Kentcky Derby. I was surprised to see J P's Gusto and Sway Away throw in complete clunkers.

Right on KyOaksRunner. The Factor is fast but his "run hard throughout" style won't cut it at 10f. Uncle Mo is much more likely to get the Derby distance because he is rateable, versatile, and has the ability to distribute his energy properly. I am bummed about Sway Away as well. The OP track was speed favoring and he did have some trouble and an uncomfortable trip but still should have run much better.

This Horse seems to me to have that added ingredient that will help him win the Derby....he loves to run.....I believe with Baffert's wisdom and experience he will have Factor ready.....Baffert is the best and Martin Garcia is an excellent hand rider and " find the hole " Rider... and knows when to make his move..... his only downside is he likes to play a little but after all he is still very young....he seems to get in front and tease the other Horses saying "Go ahead...catch me if you can...." Hopefully Martin can make him keep his minmd on his business
