What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

Led by Eclipse Award winners Lookin At Lucky and She Be Wild, a total of 366 horses have been made early nominees to the three Triple Crown races, it was announced late Saturday night by the Triple Crown racetracks, Churchill Downs, Pimlico, and Belmont Park.Read More
It's that time of year again. Turf writers, handicappers and bloggers get an extra early start on predicting who will be in the final field of 20 on that first Saturday in May. Is it premature? No doubt. Is the field set in any way? Not on your life. But ...Read More
Vale of York is a money horse. he travels, wins big purses, dodges no surface or challenge and finishes in the money. Trainer/jockey/owner combo may not be as popular as Baffert/Gomez but that just creates more value. Look for Vale of York to win big on Meyan surface as prep to Derby. Hell drop from 18 to 10 on any decent performance.
  • maverick · when a horse wins the Breeders Cup Juvenile he is usually awarded 2 yr old honors OR at the very least is named the winter book favorite for the following yrs Derby...Vale of York falls in neither category. His win in the Juvenile was NO fluke. He encountered trouble at various stages of the race, start, 1st turn, far turn, upper stretch and STILL got to the wire in time. Has to winter and prep in Dubai which hasnt worked out yet for Godolphin. One yr Sheikh Mohammed will win the Kentucky Derby his way, just dont know if it will be the 2010 edition with this horse · 10 days ago
  • horses · I have to admit, when they crossed the wire in the BC, I thought it was pretty fluky. But sdberg's right, a horse that travels, faces big fields and wins is a money horse. He ran a beautiful race in the BC. Rated super-patiently, encountered some traffic, and made a big run. So he's got a good running style and stamina will be no prob. Can't rule him out. I should also point out that he did hug the rail and that was the place to be that day, but this horse did everything right... somehow you have to feel that we haven't heard the last of Vale of York! · 10 days ago
Champion Lookin At Lucky and the only horse to beat him, Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Vale of York (Ire), shared the highweight assignment of 126 pounds on the 2009 Experimental Free Handicap, a hypothetical ranking of last year’s two-year-olds as if being handicapped for a 1 1/16-m...Read More
In my last Derby post, I stated that a new player (Take Control) had arrived on the scene. Unfortunately, the Baffert trainee has shin problems and needs a few months to recover, so he’s off the Derby trail. Barn also has Conveyance, who had to work for his San Rafael (G3) tally on Jan 16th. He will...Read More
Two potent armies are gathering en masse on opposite ends of the country. Their objective: Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. The generals: Bob Baffert, who is assembling a large force on the slopes of the San Gabriels, and Todd Pletcher, who is matching him horse for horse, with his main...Read More
The end of the year has arrived, and this is my final derby Top 10 of 2009. All Derby hopefuls turn three on January 1st, and as we inch closer to the first Saturday in May, a new player (Take Control) has arrived on the scene. Read More

  • thedodge · Take Control is to green to make the Kentucky Derby his next start is going to be an allowance race. He needs the seasoning and will lack the graded stakes money also to make the derby a horse needs a good mind and talent. He is talented no doubt about it maybe second half of the year that's my guess. · 30 days ago
  • thedodge · As for Baffert be absolutely loaded, I don't thing so from the two i liked one Clutch Player died the other Tiz Chrome he's bred to route acts like an old pro has run fast 97 beyer yes only 6 1/2f. My worry with him he has short legs maybe he's the next Northern Dancer will have to wait. For the other's Tiny Woods Sprinter no doubt, Conveyance Dr. Steven Romans says Indian Charlie his sire and Holy Bull his dame sire are intermediate Speed (non chef-de race). And in conclusion Looking At Lucky has'nt run that fast so i'am not buying. · 30 days ago
Cigar, Agree on your assessment of Vale Of York's BC trip. Pace was dreadfully and artificially slow.
The race for champion juvenile male is not over. A top field is in prospect for the CashCall Hollywood Futurity on Saturday, the final Grade I race of the year for the division.Read More
A perfect trip and a great ride and he got up for the synthetic win, but I don't see this horse as a serious Derby contender.
Who cares if it's only December? You can still pretend eggnog is really a mint julep or that Santa means Santa Anita Derby or that poinsettias smell like roses or that "Jingle Bells" sounds like "My Old Kentucky Home." Come on, you can do it. Just close your eyes and envision the sights, sounds, and...Read More
My first Kentucky Derby top ten post appeared here on Nov. 15th. A few prep races have been run since, so here is my updated list. Two horses have dropped from the original list, including Homeboykris. The Rick Dutrow trainee was a disappointing 5th in the Remsen on Nov 28th. Thiskyhasnolimit, 6th i...Read More
  • cigar · Interesting list... I think Rule should be on there, Interactif is a turfer. · 63 days ago
Now that the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is in the books, it is time to take an early look at the 2010 Kentucky Derby hopefuls. In compiling this early list, I looked for proven graded class and strong breeding, but I also wanted to use promising, lightly raced sorts on the way up....Read More
The first of eight Breeders’ Cup races on Saturday went to Pounced, who did just that in the Turf Sprint. Chalk up another win for the euros. Bridgetown set the pace and held the place by a head over Interactif. Frankie Dettori booted home the John Gosden trainee. Read More
The Kentucky Derby has been an elusive gem for the deep pockets of Godolphin Racing. Vale of York may change that misfortune. The 2-year-old colt stormed home for a frantic finish, edging betting favorite Lookin at Lucky by a head to win the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile and stamping himself as ...Read More
The presence of the most accomplished United States-based colts thus far and a strong contingent from Europe should spell value for those who wager on the Nov. 7 Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park.Read More
  • Rossington · Being undefeated and winning easily over the synthetics, Looking At Lucky is certainly the horse to beat in the B.C. Juvenile. D'Funnybone is a horse with a lot of natural speed and could certainly be the one to press him. But D'Funnybone has been primarily a conventional dirt runner, which, if he stay's healthy may serve him well in May at Churchill Downs, but it's unclear how he will rate over the pro-ride surface at Santa Anita. The distance of the race may also be a concern for D'Funnybone as well. · 101 days ago
Wertheimer and Frere's impressive homebred Interactif will be the likely favorite for the $1-million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IIT) Nov. 7 at Santa Anita, but the son of Broken Vow will have to defeat what is expected to be a full field in the one-mile event.Read More
  • Rossington · Interactif is a very impressive looking 2yr.old to me. He's a very physically fit, strong looking horse that races very smart for a 2yr.old, looking at times like an older horse. I personally think he's the best 2yr.old in training in the U.S. right now, dirt or turf. He is likely to get tested in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf by the European competition. Most particularly Viscount Nelson who is 4-2-1-1. Also from Pounced and Vale of York. Interactif is 4-3-0-0 and will likely be a slight favorite over Viscount Nelson going into the B.C. Juvenile Turf. It would be really surprising to me for this horse not to at the very least finish in the money on Breeders Cup day. · 103 days ago
On Wednesday, trainer Aidan O'Brien and Simon Crisford, Racing Manager for the Maktoum family's Godolphin operation, revealed their plans for the Breeders' Cup at a press event held at Epsom Downs racecourse in England.Read More
  • Rossington · Both of O'Brien's horses, Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman are for real. I've watched a lot of replays of races that they've either won or gave Sea The Stars all he wanted. Personally, although O'Brien doesn't seem to think so, I feel that Mastercraftsman is a bit more talented even then Rip Van Winkle. I plan to bet Mastercraftsman whether he's in the Dirt Mile or the Classic. I do, however, feel that Rip Van Winkle will be right there with the front runner's come Classic's end. If she sticks with the Classic, it would for me be difficult not to bet Zenyatta to at least hit the board. She handles the synthetics and most particularly Santa Anita race course as well as any horse in racing does. Since it seems that most good turf horses do well on the pro-ride surface, I also wouldn't rule Gio Ponti out of this race either. Beyond that, it's difficult to say. Einstein has done well here in the past having won the S.A. Handicap earlier in the year. Richard's Kid, although a longshot, has done exceedingly well on synthetics having won the Pacific Classic and finishing third in the Goodwood. Summer Bird and Quality Road are the question mark's to me in the race. Having raced exclusively on conventional dirt, no one really knows how they will fire on synthetics. If he does, I feel Quality Road may be sitting on a big race having been bogged down on off tracks his last two races. Colonel John is also proven on synthetics, although I think this particular group of horses may be a little better competition than he used to facing. All and all, this is a tough race to handicap with a lot of "what if" factors to consider. I anxiously await. · 103 days ago
