Trainer Mike Puype said Santa Anita Oaks winner Turbulent Descent is doing well during her period of R&R and could return to the races at the upcoming Hollywood Park meet in late April. “She’ll be back at the barn before April,” Puype said. “We’re just going to give her 60 days.”
  • Floridaf · I hope her R&R time returns her to her pre-BC form. I am very excited to see her return in this year's sprints. · 121 days ago ·

Someone once said that year-end reviews are what journalists write to avoid making New Year's resolutions. This is probably true, since I haven't gotten around to writing resolutions yet (number one, don't procrastinate?) At any rate, it's time to remember the high points of 12 months of coverage as...Read More

David Flores knows Turbulent Descent like the back of his hand. The 43-year-old jockey has ridden the daughter of Congrats in each of her nine races, winning six and finishing second twice. • Mary Z. · No way is Turbulent Descent going to get the Female Sprint Eclipse. First off, not all of her wins can be considered sprints and her sprint wins weren't exactly fast, which is sort of the main theme of a sprint if I can for once openly like speed. Musical Romance is likewise not a fast sprinter. Too bad the fast females had injuries, like Hilda's Passion or Sassy Image-another one that had some bad races at Gulfstream. Here's a handicapping minor rule I use: throw out bad finishes for fillies at GP and any bad race by a horse that was stuck on the rail there. So I don't really have a pick for top female sprinter but I would really like some explanation as to why Switch was not run on dirt at 7f. as much as possible this year and not all the other experimentation? Not that I'm owed an explanation. Just put one in my stocking if inclined, thanks. Male sprinter: simply put Amazombie. Want more detail? I'll whip out equibase or it's there for all to review. Add in his DQ as a win cuz, truly not long ago he wouldn't have been taken down. Nowadays, yes, ancient times, probably not. · 167 days ago ·

  • rorschach1992 · Ahh, sorry about that! Here's my picks: 3yoM: Hansen, I've liked him from the get-go, and think his juvenile was no fluke, he is better than Union Rags and the lot. My dark horse for this award is Creative Cause. 3yoF: Weemissfrankie or Grace Hall. I think as they mature they'll overtake My Miss Aurelia. Older Female: Awesome Feather, if she keeps winning she'll be unstoppable. Royal Delta or Zazu; tremendous potential in both, and both willl be more mature next year. Grace will have to deal with more mature runners in this year's 3yo crop. They'll probably overtake her. Older Male: I like Pegasus, but I want to see how he looks upon returning before throwing him in. So my current pick is Game On Dude, if he stays consistent, he'll be the one to beat. Turf Horse Male: Agreed Mr. Commons, he ran great in the BC Mile, 5th not beaten too much, and could be a force. Another with great potential. Also want to see if Acclamation keeps his form. He'll be in the running if he does. Turf Female: Star Billing, Shirreffs could take both divisions with the two very talented 3yos. She's got as much talent as Mr. Commons. HOY: I'm going with Hansen, I've loved him all fall, and his BC was super impressive. If he keeps his form, he'll be the on to beat. I'm hoping he shows us great things next year. He's my Derby pick, and the one I'll be watching next year. But I think Awesome Feather could be dark horse for HOY, should she keep up her winning ways. No opinion on the 2yos yet. · 176 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · annmatt, HDG could get 10f plenty fine, and I'm sorry, BL was not even close to a shoe in after her last race, and would not have been because of her two losses prior. FO who won at 10f finished behind HDG in the Classic, and I heard people just yelling about the fact that with one extra furlong he would catch her...how did that work? HDG does not seem to run her best over Churchill. She did not have an overly impressive work over the track this year and still finished well. Trying to say what could have been will drive anyone mad. BL is a great horse, but did not have it this season plain and simple. HDG should not get a minus becase her two losses to BL at 10f were by a neck and a whisker. You don't take off because she beat her at a shorter distance. If you do that then you might as well take off BL for beating her at a distance longer than 9f. The score was 1-1, even. It goes to the horse who did the most, Grace. · 198 days ago ·

  • gocashking · Amazombie, by finishing the year with big wins in the Ancient Title and BC Sprint is a no brainer for the Sprint Champion Eclipse. It won't even be close. There's no way 7F and 8F wins will be rated higher than those two wins at the "traditional" sprint distance of 6F. Caling Flashpoint "brilliant" is also a bit of a stretch, I think. · 197 days ago ·
