Yesterday, however, is a horse of a different color. The rail on the main track surely did seem to be a hinderance throughout the day, and with a massive frame like MMM has, you've got to let him stretch his legs out and run. LAZMANNICK · I’m a big fan of both, but an important thing to remember is that in four races between the two, To Honor and Serve has won three of them, and Mucho Macho Man one. I agree that being locked along the inside at Saratoga is usually not a good place to be. But neither is being wide around both turns in a two turn race. Let’s not forget that while MMM was locked along that inside, he was at least saving ground, and this through the entire race. THAS was four and then three wide on the clubhouse turn and three wide narrowing down to two wide around the far turn. And during this time MMM was never that far behind him. When they turned for home and MMM got clear and came at THAS, he had no excuse. The end result can be deciphered as either THAS dug in and refused to lose or that MMM needs his own way and can’t win those tough head to head duals in the stretch. I think one of the differences in THAS’s favor was the switch to John V., who fits his running style perfectly. John rode a great race, positioned THAS perfectly and made his move when he wanted to, not when he had to. With the way he stalked the pace, this is the first time that I have had confidence that THAS can get 10F and I also believe that he might be a better two turn horse than a one turn one. I’m not so confident that MMM will, especially since I can’t see where Macho Uno has sired a 10F winner and he’s been a sire for quite a while now. · 261 days ago ·

Considering how late a foal Mucho Macho Man was, and the obvious time he needed to grow into his massive body, I find it pretty amazing that he was able to be graded stakes placed at two. · 261 days ago ·

MattBernier · For the most part, I completely agree with you AndyScoggin. Shackleford is a huge play against for me, considering tossing him completely. At best he's a "C" (using Steve Crist ABC method). I understand the Vanderbilt was on off going, but Shack ran horribly in the Travers last year as well. Dave Grening from DRF said he didn't look as well as he normally does in his most recent work - I think he just doesn't care for the Saratoga surface. In 1963 Chateaugay won the Derby & Belmont. Again, Kelso was HOY. In 1964 Northern Dancer won the Derby & Preakness. Kelso again! There are a lot of other examples of this. · 294 days ago ·

Others are Funny Cide in 2003 (Mineshaft was HOY), War Emblem in 2002 (Azeri was HOY), Smarty Jones in 2004 (Ghostzapper was HOY). And there are candidates for HOY among the older horses besides Ron the Greek. Acclamation & Game on Dude for example. I'm waiting eagerly for him to return to racing, though I've heard he'll be on the turf to avoid GoD (which is probably a wise move, though he might have to contend with Acclamation instead). He's a monster, even if he is one-dimensional. I think if Acclamation has the kind of year he had last year and adds a BC win to it, he could easily end up with HOTY. Really thought you could make a solid case for him deserving it last year with his 2011 resume, but I think the lack of a BC run compromised his chances. · 319 days ago ·

But I never really felt like the surface at Meydan would be a big plus for him. Nor has been for Richard's Kid over the past year or so. Also very good to see him back with Bob Baffert again racing in California. Barring anything that would cut Game On Dude's season short unexpectedly? Okay, so I'm going with Thirsty because I like how he ran in his first start back, plus his past route wins and I there will be a very good pace set up for him. Next, Buffum, who I would have picked to win if he just had more experience at this class level. Noticed the jockey going to Thirsty, but of course that's business, but of note. THAS, fast at this distance.Won the Westchester at this track. Hopefully Met Mile was a good prep for the longer distance. His jockey, Dominguez went with Trickmeister, but maybe Trick Meister has a big class jump to make with MMM dogging him. In fourth I have Endorsement . He needs to lay off the speed and run like he did in the Texas Mile. My picks are heavy on Bernardini/A.P.Indy, not on purpose. If I were to do a super, I'd include Hymn Book; one problem with him is his susceptibility to being bumped. He was bumped in the Donn(was he the culprit against my pick Where's Sterling?)and won, but other times traffic /bumping throws him off his game. I like Caixa, just don't think this will be one of his shockers. If it is, I'll be happy for him, sad for my losing ticket. Don't know exactly how I'll play this, as I would want to include all on the bottom, maybe third, too; gets too expensive, even at .10. · 322 days ago ·

Odds represent probabilities of success and they are set MUTUALLY by the crowd. Until one is in possession of those probabilities and they can compare them to the specific probabilites that the turf speculator has assesed, there is simply NO way to understand if there is a bet to be made or not....I am not even considering the fact of scratches or weather changes that could happen betwee then and post time which could significantly alter both the make up of the field and the possible track biases that may or may not evolve by the time the stater presses the button. ILuvTurfRacing · Certainly no disrespect meant to Gio Ponti when I say that Animal Kingdom and Royal Delta may very likely be the strongest duo that America has sent into the Dubai World Cup, at least since the race moved from Nad Al Sheba to Meydan 3 years ago. Like I said, no disrespect meant to Gio Ponti. Because he definitely held up his end representing America in the last 2 DWC's. 4th of 14 in 2010 and 5th of 14 in 2011. Frankly, it's been Richard's Kid both years that didn't hold up his end? Which always surprised me some, because he was a multiple G1 winner on synthetic surfaces in America. That's why I say the DWC is a tough 1-1/4 for any horse, because you're facing the best in the world from all over the world. Richard's Kid was a top class synthetic surface horse in America, but could only muster a 7th of 14 finish in 2010 and 12th of 14 in 2011. Personally, I have a really good feeling about Royal Delta, in-particular, running in the DWC. Provided switching from conventional dirt to tapeta doesn't effect her performance? I'm not all suggesting that Animal Kingdom isn't capable of running a really big race in the DWC, too? But I must admit that the long lay-off from his run in the Belmont Stakes back in June all the way up until the very end of March by the time he'll go to post is a bit of a concern for me. GregRiessland · Acclamation could handle the late movers, hell they hardly get there in this race. most are 4th and 5th. most of the time the winner is a leader or a stalker. i would say acclamation would win by 2 or 3. you know what happens in these races is they let a horse like acclamation run away with it half the time. if there is a front runner who can handle classic distance they are very dangerous in these long races. · 475 days ago ·

Flat Out needs to gain confidence in easier races to get back to last years form. Same with Ruler on Ice And as for the others-Adios Charlie is a sprinter! Trickmeister? Duke of Mischief? Brilliant Speed? Prayer for Relief? What makes the trainers think those horses have any chance against the worlds best when they can't even beat America's best? icyhotboo · It's easy to read the form after the race is run. I read it before the race and knew MI was going to get the garden spot and tossed him as he was to slow in my opinion which was obviously wrong. That's why it's so important, at least for me to see the horses just before the race. Many of these are so close in ability that it comes down to who feels the best on race day. I had the #10 but I also burned a lot of money trying to catch the ex, tri, super, and furthemore I didn't think the #10 was going to get there in time. · 467 days ago ·
