What the Nation is saying about Trading Leather...

Godolphin has purchased "majority shares" in the Jim Bolger trained Trading Leather and also in the Richard Hannon trained Piping Rock, unbeaten as a 2yo in 2013. Like Dawn Approach last season, Trading Leather will remain in the yard of trainer Jim Bolger and Piping Rock will also remain with the same trainer, which will now be Richard Hannon, Jr. after New Years.
A basic unknown to the casual American race fan, other than possibly as the horse who won Animal Kindgdom’s final career start, Declaration of War is coming to Santa Anita to run the final race of his own career in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. So just who is this horse that has given his connections r...Read More

  • ILuvTurfRacing · Declaration of War is a very classy horse that's all business once he's out on the track. This will obviously be his first time ever racing on conventional dirt, but War Front offspring has burning up all 3 surfaces in America and abroad. Plus, last season Declaration of War won the G3 Diamond Stakes over 10-1/2f on Dundalk's synthetic track in Ireland, which I've been told probably plays as close to being like conventional dirt as any synthetic track in Europe. The distance or the class isn't an issue at all with this horse. The only question that has to be answered is how he'll handle the switch to dirt? I don't know if Declaration of War will prove good enough to win the BC Classic or not? But I do think he gives Coolmore the best chance they've had of winning the race since Giant's Causeway in 2000 where the race has been held on conventional dirt and not synthetics. · 178 days ago ·

Kind of bummed that Jim Bolger pulled Trading Leather out of consideration from running in this year's Arc. He ran awfully well this season in the G1 Irish Derby, G1 King George, G1 Juddmonte International Stakes, & G1 Irish Champion Stakes, and though he may not have been good enough to win this year's Arc or even get a piece of it, I still felt like he earned and deserved his shot at running in the race.

  • Northport · This is just a guess, but it is obvious that Japan has no shortage of first class stallions, but a great deal of these stallions have breeders backed into a corner since almost all are descendants of Sunday Silence. The way I see it is that any chance they have to breed to a high class European turf sire that is an SS outcross, especially while the mare is already over there, the better. · 199 days ago ·

  • jonquil · You're right, of course. There are a few that aren't Sunday Silence sons/grandsons, but most are. Some of the horses K. I. Farm bred were out of a Tony Bin mare, out of those foals three were from either Rock Of Gibraltar or Montjeu. I honestly thought they were going to breed her to one of those, but supposedly both stallions are still in training at ages 7 and 8. :S · 199 days ago ·

Declaration of War came, he saw and he conquered in accounting for his five rivals with the utmost ease to win going away in the Group 1 Juddmonte International at York. Read More
  • ILuvTurfRacing · If Coolmore run Declaration of War in the BC Classic I think it gives them the best chance of winning the race they've had when the venue has been held on conventional dirt since Giant's Causeway in 2000. DOW's pedigree suggest he should go well on dirt, and I'm convinced 10f suits this horse even better than a mile does. I would like DOW chances of beating the horses lining up for the BC Classic over trying to beat Wise Dan in the BC Mile. JMO. · 239 days ago ·

Dan Munn is not the only one geeked up for Wednesday’s Juddmonte International. The showdown at York looks to be one of the races of the year, and with my favorite international horse, Toronado, testing uncharted territories, the English race has my full attention. I must say it’s nice to have this ...Read More

  • jonquil · Eh, I dunno that Toronado will do *that* poorly here. And I think Declaration of War might struggle a bit - too soon after his last big race in Deauville. · 241 days ago ·

  • jonquil · That's what I get for actually listening to a jockey for once. Ah well, what a shocker. Declaration of War won, Trading Leather got 2nd, and Al Kazeem was 3rd. Toronado was at the very back. I think Hughes was just too besotted with this horse this time to really know its limits, but what a shocker that DoW could run so well having been run so much this season and so soon after that last race! · 241 days ago ·

One year removed from Frankel winning the Juddmonte International, York is spoiled once more with an embarrassment of equine riches.Read More
  • ILuvTurfRacing · Anyone believing this a 2-horse race between only Al Kazeem & Toronado is really fooling themselves, IMO. The 10-1/2f trip is completely uncharted territory for Toronado. Frankly, I'll be hard pressed to use him in my tri-fecta with horses like Trading Leather who's won the Irish Derby and was 2nd in the King George in his last 2 starts, Hillstar who's won the King Edward VII Stakes & 3rd in the King George in his last 2 starts, and Declaration of War who I've always suspected might be a better horse over this trip than he is at a mile who already has a 2nd behind Al Kazeem in the Coral-Eclipse at 10f. I'm not suggesting Toronado won't get the distance. He may even thrive for the step up in trip from a mile? But I am suggesting this is way more than a 2-horse race. · 242 days ago ·

A race which harboured the hopes of many lofty reputations, the Group 2 Dante Stakes provided the ultimate shock as William Buick enhanced his own ever-growing reputation by urging 33-1 long-shot Libertarian to victory in the key Epsom Derby trial.
