What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Tizway...

Here are my picks in my favorite Eclipse Award Divisions. I am trying to enjoy what 2011 gave us before heading into the 2012 Road to the Roses, but that has been hard to do with the Sham Stakes already in the book. But I managed to find a little time to think Eclipse Awards. Read More

Is he not aware that they both ran on World stages and were absolute non-factors, Mission Approved 14th out of 16 in the Japan Cup and Dean's Kitten 9th and last in the BC Turf. That's really not a glowing recommendation for Cape Blanco. · 24 days ago ·

Who would have though a gelding competing in starter allowances would cause such an enormous uproar in America? Well, Rapid Redux managed to do just that when he broke the modern American win streak last night, Thursday, November 21, 2011. • genie918 · While I feel Rapid Redux should be recognized at the Eclipse Awards for his accomplishment, I do not believe that he deserves HOY because of the level of competition/races he has participated in. My vote would go for Havre de Grace. This year she won 5 races--3 GI and 2 G2 that included a win in the Woodward against the boys. Her only defeats were in the G2 Delaware Handicap by a nose to the great Blind Luck and a fourth place finish in the BC Classic. In the Classic, she overcame traffic problems, being bumped and was still finishing strongly in the end, so her loss was respectable. Curlin won HOY honors in 2008 with a similiar record: 5 wins/4 GI and one ungraded race in Dubai, a second in the Man o' War and a fourth place finish in the BC Classic. Now, I realize that one of Curlin's wins came in the Dubai World Cup--a race that adds extra points to ones resume when reviewing championship honors, but we have to keep in mind the type of year it has been in 2011. Havre de grace's record has been solid and consistent ALL year, so I hope the voters recognize this and give her the year end honors. · 78 days ago ·

  • Snowking6 · Rapid Redux is already in the history books--and deserves special notice at the Eclipse Awards and in other venues, and should never be forgotten. I would love to see him retired as soon as it makes sense to the Kentucky Horse Park. But Horse of the Year--even in a muddled year, does not make sense--simply because he is not at the class level to have made his record against the other contenders for HOY--almost certainly. We love him, though!! Great to see his sort in these modern times. In some ways, he is MY Horse of the Year! · 78 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · annmatt, HDG could get 10f plenty fine, and I'm sorry, BL was not even close to a shoe in after her last race, and would not have been because of her two losses prior. FO who won at 10f finished behind HDG in the Classic, and I heard people just yelling about the fact that with one extra furlong he would catch her...how did that work? HDG does not seem to run her best over Churchill. She did not have an overly impressive work over the track this year and still finished well. Trying to say what could have been will drive anyone mad. BL is a great horse, but did not have it this season plain and simple. HDG should not get a minus becase her two losses to BL at 10f were by a neck and a whisker. You don't take off because she beat her at a shorter distance. If you do that then you might as well take off BL for beating her at a distance longer than 9f. The score was 1-1, even. It goes to the horse who did the most, Grace. · 89 days ago ·

  • gocashking · Amazombie, by finishing the year with big wins in the Ancient Title and BC Sprint is a no brainer for the Sprint Champion Eclipse. It won't even be close. There's no way 7F and 8F wins will be rated higher than those two wins at the "traditional" sprint distance of 6F. Caling Flashpoint "brilliant" is also a bit of a stretch, I think. · 88 days ago ·

  • Cigar16 · All fans should go to a live Breeders Cup at least once. But even with stars in my eyes I can see travel_vic's point. Watching at home you do get to see all of it, at the track, even with a good seat it has its drawbacks. I have gone to several, and do not regret the hassles etc. But watching at home you have the best seat in the house. At home there are no dirty bathrooms, parking issues, crammed bleacher seating, (shame on GP in 99, I was a sanctioned sardine) long lines at the windows, jammed self service machines, lines at concessions, backups at valet parking, you name it! Only problem is if there is a late scratch you cannot cancel your tickets. :) · 99 days ago ·

Tizway will miss Classic due to injury EmailPrintComments 2 By David Grening Daily Racing Form Archive Trainer James Bond believed Tizway was "an unbelievable racehorse" and was champing at the bit to show the rest of the world just how unbelievable at next week's Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs. He won't get that opportunity. Tizway's career came to an abrupt end Tuesday when he was diagnosed with a strain of the suspensory ligament of his left foreleg that will force him out of the Breeders' Cup. He will now be retired to stud at B. Wayne Hughes's Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky. "The saddest part of it all is I had one more step on the ladder to show everybody this is an unbelievable race horse," Bond said by phone Tuesday from Saratoga. "Hopefully, his foals turn out to be half of what he is." The injury was detected Tuesday following Tizway's regular two-mile gallop at Saratoga, one day in advance of his final workout for the Breeders' Cup. After standing in a tub of ice in his stall as he normally does following his morning training, Tizway was found to have some heat and swelling in his left foreleg. An ultrasound revealed the strain. "I could give him two months off and he'd be okay," Bond said. "Unfortunately, the Breeders' Cup is next week." Tizway on Monday was pre-entered for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, where a victory would have most likely cemented Horse of the Year honors for the 6-year-old son of Tiznow. Earlier this year, Tizway won the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park and the Grade 1 Whitney Invitational at Saratoga. Bond had planned to run Tizway in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Oct. 1, but was forced to miss that race due to a temperature the week before. Tizway missed very little training time and even shipped to Belmont Park for a one-mile workout over the main track on Oct. 12. "This horse has been magnificent, I do mean magnificent," Bond said. "He was training so I good. I thought I was so smart getting that work in at Belmont. I loved the way he came out of it, he was going to go three-quarters [Wednesday], put him on a truck on Monday, and hopefully kick butt on Saturday." Tizway, owned by Bond's long-time client William Clifton Jr., retires with a record of 7-1-5 from 20 starts and career earnings of $1,359,274. Tizway suffered from several infirmities in his career, the most serious being a broken wing bone in his foot. But since overcoming that last year, he won the Grade 2 Kelso in October 2010 before finishing fifth as the second choice in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. This year, he finished third in the Gulfstream Park Handicap and the Charles Town Classic before his dynamic victory in the Metropolitan Handicap, where his final time of 1:32.90 was the second-fastest clocking in the 118-year history of the Met Mile. He followed that up with a three-length victory in the Grade 1 Whitney Invitational at Saratoga on Aug. 6, which, unfortunately, turned out to be his swan song.

  • GoTexas · Oh yeah....GO MO! I have to laugh. Thinking back to those dark times when Mo was in 'rehab' at WinStar. I was following Mo's status as much as I could on Facebook. There were LOTS of messages every day from lots of people just wanting to know how he was doing. Every now and then we'd get an update or, better yet, a VIDEO of our boy. I think I made a comment one time about wondering the the WS folk had any idea what they were getting when they had 'MO in the house'. So many fans just love this colt (me too!).
