What the Nation is saying about Timely Writer...

Any fan of horse racing knows the incredible highs and lows that are part of loving this sport. As another fall prepares to welcome race fans to Belmont Park, I do what I do every year. I reminisce about those golden years of racing, and think about many of those unforgettable days at the racetrack....Read More

  • MaidenKing · As a teen-ager, began playing the races at Suffolk Downs in the early 1980's. Timely Writer was the horse that put our track on the map at the time and everybody at the East Boston oval was rooting for him whenever he ran and we were crushed when he died on the track. Great horse, tragic ending. · 249 days ago ·

The Primary photo uploaded here of TW is from http://www.pedigreequery.com/timely+writer. It's a cool site too. I tried to put the crediting under the photo but the upload wouldn't let me.
Check out the story I attached in the Biography tab about Timely & his connections before Timely missed the Kentucky Derby due to colic surgery. It's a funny story and gives you an amusing version of their personalities.

Yes. Now he has a stakes race named after him at Gulfstream Park that Uncle Mo won and Rattlesnake Bridge finished second in.
  • qrluna · Thanks for confirming. I thought it was named for him, but I wasn't positive. Happily, someone thought to add the stakes race to this site so I thought it only fair to add the horse too. · 404 days ago ·

Personal note: I was a very young racing fan and had attached myself to this horse because his name was cool. Little did I know that watching the '82 Jockey Club Gold Cup would hurt so much and that horse racing tragedies never really leave you, they just remind you that sometimes there is a heavy priced paid
  • qrluna · ... for loving the sport of kings. Wikipedia says"Timely Writer was buried at the head of the stretch at Belmont Park, an honor previously granted only to the great filly Ruffian." I am assuming the $100,000 Timely Writer Stakes at Gulfstream Park is named after him but I'm not sure yet. · 404 days ago ·
