What the Nation is saying about Thunder Gulch...

I have just finished reading the book Bred to Run, by Mike Helm. It is about Mike’s account of a one-week visit to Claiborne Farm in 1992. In a 1:1 interview with Seth Hancock, Helm indirectly asked, why is there no stamina in US bloodstock anymore? Seth had some very interesting theories, one of wh...Read More

  • cugel the clever · Simple law of supply and demand. Most of the big-money and big-prestige races are at 10 furlongs or less. The biggest races on the calendar for older horses and late-year 3yo races should be at 12 furlongs or more. That would certainly bring stamina back into the breeding and training philosophy of the sport. · 4 days ago ·

  • cugel the clever · A good start would be to move the Pacific Classic, Santa Anita Handicap, Breeders Cup Classic, and Travers to 12 furlongs; and to make the BC Marathon one of the premier races with a purse of at least 2 million dollars instead of its current status as a freak show novelty race which attracts grade 3 stakes winners and optional claimers. · 4 days ago ·

The Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) is almost always a key post-classic test for 3-year-olds. This year, the race took on a potentially added significance, offering Preakness Stakes (gr. I) victor Shackleford or the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) captor Ruler On Ice—both of whom had the sidelined Kentuc...Read More
What's the old saying? “Those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it.” Trying not to fall into that trap, I've decided to pour over my memory bank of Belmont's Past to better prepare myself for tomorrow's outcome. In so doing, I have found winners of previous runnings that have an awfu...Read More

  • djp4567 · I like your comments but going to have to go with the chalk in this one. Animal Kingdom just looks too good for this field. If he stays close to the pace he should run away with it. Ever since I was a very young racing fan, I have always looked forward to The Fountain of Youth Stakes. Perhaps as a youngster it was the catchy name that caught me eye, but as the first serious Kentucky Derby prep for the Eastern three-year-olds, no doubt it has been the stature of the race has kep...Read More

Shortly after J. B.’s Thunder crossed the line to win the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, trainer Al Stall was saying the Thunder Gulch colt was no better than 50-50 to go to the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. • humphrey · The breakdown KING without second place even being in the same universe! How many really good ones were lost during this reign of medications. Jim Squires tells about the culture of drugs used to prep the quarter horses for show and exactly who and when it became a standard in the t-bred community. Friends at Claiborne told me of how studdish Winning Colors was for almost 6 months and how this FEMALE looked like a male (WONDER WHY?) before they could get her is foal. Darrel Wayne brings you the wonders of pharmaceuticals. Most folks wouldn't have treated a stray dog the way he treated Lady's Secret. · 665 days ago ·

There was a quote from D. Wayne Lukas in Saturday’s New York Post suggesting the distances of the Triple Crown races be changed to 1 1/8 miles, 1 3/16 miles, and 1 1/4 miles.
