  • tmallios1 · Rosie did not let him go,she gave him his head. She smartly did not try to restrain him when he took off on her. What i did not like about the race was that he did not finish well. Usually when a horse is so much the best in a race. They open up their lead, usually they are geared down at the end.The winning margin thus becomes irrelevant. The fact Rosie had to get into him so much at the top of the stretch was not a good sign. When isay to relax,i do not mean to slow him down. I want the horse running and striding at maximum speed. In a manner where he or she is comfortable. In my eyes at least, this guy was Tugging at Rosie the entire way.He was neverwithin herself,Fact she never tried to get a hold of him shows me he was to wound up.If she tried it,it may of caused injury. What i am saying is ,that this horse never looked comfortable the entire race. · 127 days ago ·

  • JanicePalmer · Yes, tm, I agree with you, totally! I think we are basically same the same thing, you just put it better than I did! :) My point was, you'd expect him to tire late after tugging and going those fast fractions early. But, his daddy had the light bub go on after his sprint and he (Old Fashioned) learned to relax early in his races. I'm not yet ready to give up on this guy, and if he does learn to relax, then he just may have more to offer in the 2-turn stretch run. · 127 days ago ·

The Trunk Monkey in a 2-turn race (race 7) at the Fair Grounds today with huge implications! He appears to be very talented.

  • tmallios1 · Janice i think the final number is not that important for him.He will get a fast Speed figure. I personally was not that thrilled with his race. He showed he could not relax, i did not like the way he finished up the race. Rosie had to get into him. That being said, what he did show me is that this guy is a G1 capable sprinter. In only his 2nd start ,you can just see the speed and ability. I sure hope they concentrate on those strengths and build on them. The horses chasing him yesterday were not much. If he ran against top competiion going 2 turns, i seriously doubt he would be able to do that. Jones is an amazing trainer, one that can probably teach a horse more working with him on a daily basis than 1 race can ever teach them. I have seen him twice now, this horse does not relax,he is headstrong. Harness that and use it to an advantage. But if they ever try to make this guy a distance horse and try to get him to relax. In the process, they will lose his most natural gift . That would be his outstanding Speed. · 130 days ago ·

Said adios to the field and put on an old fashioned romp!
The Trunk Monkey received a 6 3/4 ragozin # for his debut effort. Now, if he learns to get out of the gate and carry his speed, the sky's the limit for this talented Old Fashioned colt!

  • JanicePalmer · Sullivan, thanks for the heads-up! She's one to watch for sure! Although, I must confess, tops on my calendar at the moment is the following Saturday with Cassatt stepping up (most likely) in the Rachel Alexandra. And, Normandy Invasion ought to be in a comeback race soon, too! · 153 days ago ·

  • JanicePalmer · tm, sorry, just saw your question about The Trunk Monkey's name. Porter owns car dealerships and in some of their TV commecials they had trunk monkeys. You can see these adds on you tube. But, that's how Rick Porter came up with the name for this horse. Personally, I like it, think it shows a sense of humor. · 155 days ago ·

  • JanicePalmer · Have a comment about Cassatt's 2 races, mainly for Lisa and tm, but I think it's time we give this gal her due and put comments about her under her own name and profile. So, if interested, click onto Cassatt's profile. · 155 days ago ·
