the late Summer Bird gets his first winner! Kid Brock (Summer Bird x Brenda's Slew by Straight Man) won a MSW going 5F at Prairie Meadows!
  • Dressage3295 · I was very excited to hear about that! Had 4 3/4 length clear victory in Iowa. Quite impressive · 691 days ago

I had no idea Summer Bird passed!
The first foal of Summer Bird's first and only Japanese crop has been born. A filly out of Aphelandra (JPN) (by El Condor Pasa) - http://uma-furusato.com/news/detail/_id_75609
He was lazy when I met him. Mainly laid around. He did get up at one point and walked over to me, and I got to pet him.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/91093795@N00/8665060661/
  • RichChatter · I am jealous you got to meet him. It must have been wonderful to see him, despite his laziness. · 884 days ago
  • SSilence86 · It was. I honestly didn't know he was there at Pauls Mill Farm. We went into the stallion barn, and his was the only stall with no head waiting expectantly at the door. lol I read the plaque before I saw him. · 884 days ago
We lost so many great sires this year, what a year it has been for breeding
This makes me so sad. Died due to complications of colic. I'm glad I got to meet you. RIP buddy.

  • Buckpasser · Very upset to see this. RIP. Having lost three horses to colic and it's complications, it is an insidious illness and I am always upset when this happens. · 886 days ago
  • goblin · Sad news; he was a very nice horse. I hope his few crops of foals do well on the track. · 886 days ago
Rest in peace lovely boy.
R.I.P. Summer Bird
I know it's still a year away, but I can't wait until Summer Bird's foals hit the track! I'm still sour over him being sent to Japan. He had great confirmation, a great pedigree, and great stamina by today's standards.
Has arrived safely in Japan and has a book of 158 mares lined up for 2013. http://blog.goo.ne.jp/umaichi_news/e/938e69551ef18cfae6af784802c4614c
Can someone explain to me why the USA sells alot of our horses to Japan? I really am just wondering. Is it that Japan offers the most money? I'm very curious because we just lost a lot of mares to them as well, and now Summer Bird on top of many others.

Excited to see this one's foals hit the track. I like his confirmation- hoping he'll pass it on

  • Dressage3295 · Yes I'm betting the offer was just too good to refuse- especially since they don't yet know for sure how his foals will turn out · 1291 days ago
I just received a breaking news flash by e-mail via Bloodhorse.com that 2009 Belmont Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Summer Bird has been officially retired. The article stated that Summer Bird had not improved from the leg fracture he sustained while training for the Japan Cup (Dirt). Summer Bird proved to be one of the tougher 3yr.old's in 2009, and really proved his metal. I was really looking forward, given the way that Quality Road has been racing so far in 2010, to seeing a Summer Bird-Quality Road rematch in either the 2010 Travers Stakes or the 2010 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Or both? Best of luck to Summer Bird in his future endevours in the breeding shed.
Curious trainer change for Summer Bird...
I hope he comes out of surgery ok... would be great to see him duking it out in the handicap division in 2010 and not in the breeding shed.
A real shame about his injury, but glad it sounds like its not life threatening.
The 'Other Bird' is now THE Bird!
Agree... missing a workout is not good... but they did the same thing a couple of weeks before the Belmont. They let everyone know the horse was not going to breeze but was fine...
Missing a workout is not good, no matter how you dress it up with wanting more time or freshness.
