  • arazi · Too bad we won't get to see any more of Summer Bird. Might have been an interesting challenger to Quality Road. · 91 days ago
I just received a breaking news flash by e-mail via Bloodhorse.com that 2009 Belmont Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Summer Bird has been officially retired. The article stated that Summer Bird had not improved from the leg fracture he sustained while training for the Japan Cup (Dirt). Summer Bird proved to be one of the tougher 3yr.old's in 2009, and really proved his metal. I was really looking forward, given the way that Quality Road has been racing so far in 2010, to seeing a Summer Bird-Quality Road rematch in either the 2010 Travers Stakes or the 2010 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Or both? Best of luck to Summer Bird in his future endevours in the breeding shed.
With all the hoopla surrounding Zenyatta and Rachel at the end of 2009, and the Triple Crown occupying our thoughts for the first few months of this year, it’s been easy to forget about Summer Bird. Curious trainer change for Summer Bird...
It seems like yesterday when Tim Ice and the Jayaramans were standing in the basement of Belmont Park at their winning press conference where Dr. KKJ was lavishing praise on his trainer. One morning the week of the Kentucky Derby, trainer Tim Ice was asked if he thought the race might be a little ambitious for Summer Bird, who at that point had raced just three times. His career had begun just two months earlier at Oaklawn Park, with a fourth-place finish in a maiden race. Summer Bi...Read More

“With the close of each racing year comes the interesting problem of the best horse…In past years this was much easier than it is in the present.
