What the Nation is saying about Stephen's Got Hope...

Sidney’s Candy delivered a powerhouse victory in the $150,000 Sir Beaufort Stakes (G3) on Sunday’s opening day card at Santa Anita Park, setting a torrid pace under Joel Rosario and scooting away in the stretch to a 7 1/4-length romp. The three-year-old Candy Ride (Arg) colt flashed an exciting comb...Read More

  • cugel the clever · It's hilarious to see how people, who should know better, jump on a horse's bandwagon and make unrealistic exptraplolations based on 1 race. Sidney's jockey said it best: “He’s a really good horse and he likes to run free and easy,”. Please note, GOOD horse, not "great" horse. Horses like Zenyatta and Goldikova have establised a career body of work which qualifies them as GREAT horses. They dazzle against weak competition and they step up their game to dazzle against strong competition. The problem with horses like Sidney's Candy and Quality Road is that they dazzle against weak competition and set track records; but when faced against truly formidable opponents, they fold up their tents and fade into the background. Sidney has consistently folded when faced with the best in the world (or even the USA). · 879 days ago ·

Doug O’Neill could learn a thing or two about honor and humility from Yasuo Ikee, a trainer who brought two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Deep Impact to France to contest the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2006. Deep Impact finished third as the favorite, disappointing millions ...Read More
Trainer Doug O’Neill has decided not to appeal an Illinois suspension that is being enforced in California and effective June 30 he will have no horses race in his name for 15 days. O’Neill’s attorney Steve Schwartz, said based on the cost of an appeal and the unlikelihood that the suspension would ...Read More
Trainer Doug O'Neill told Daily Racing Form his large stable probably will be inactive from June 30-July 14 after California Horse Racing Board stewards ruled they would enforce a 15-day suspension issued in Illinois earlier this year. The suspension resulted from a test detecting an excess level of...Read More
Updated 2010 Kentucky Derby Graded Stakes earnings as of March 31, 2010. Key contenders Eskendereya, Caracortado, Schoolyard Dreams, Drosselmeyer, Jackson Bend and Pleasant Prince will all likely require more graded stakes earnings to get in. Read More
  • bband · It seems like more horses will get shut out this year than in recent memory. What will be interesting is if Pletcher starts all 7 horses, fully knowing the lesser ones can't compete with his top runners. But what it will do is keep several real contenders out of the race. · 1149 days ago ·

Backtalk is a 3-1 favorite in a field of eight for Saturday's Illinois Derby.Read More
  • UpInClass · Threw in a 3rd place clunker after working 6 furlongs in 1:09.3. Many handicappers will abandon the BACKTALK bandwagon... but I have a feeling this talented colt still has a chance to light up the tote in the Kentucky Derby on May 1st... Good Luck to all BACKTALK backers! · 1143 days ago ·

Bob Baffert said late Sunday morning he is "90 percent sure" that multiple Grade 1 victor LOOKIN AT LUCKY (Smart Strike) will run in Saturday's $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1) rather the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park on April 10. The champion colt worked six furlongs on Santa Anita'...Read More
  • Rossington · I'm certainly not qualified to second guess Bob Baffert. But, IMO, another race at Oaklawn, on conventional dirt, in the Arkansas Derby would be much more beneficial to Lookin At Lucky heading to Churchill Downs than another run on the synthetic track at Santa Anita. I guess maybe Baffert is thinking Lookin At Lucky will be extremely tough to beat at Santa Anita, and a win in the S.A. Derby would give Lucky a bunch of confidence going to Kentucky. Otherwise, why not let your 3yr.old star get some more dirt track experience? TJMO. · 1152 days ago ·

  • cigar · I would agree, but once you've proven the horse handles dirt, why bother with the ship when you can walk over for a decent amount of coin? I would keep him home as well, and have the next ship be to Churchill. · 1152 days ago ·

On Saturday, the popular duo of jockey Paul Atkinson and CARACORTADO (Cat Dreams) hope to move a step closer to the May 1 Kentucky Derby (G1) when they run in the $150,000 San Felipe S. Mike Machowsky has seen enough. After Caracortado worked five furlongs in 58.60 seconds, or six furlongs in 1:12 by Machowsky's watch, on Friday the trainer pronounced the undefeated 3-year-old ready for the $150,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita this Saturday."I'll just gallop him the rest of th...Read More
