Older Comments about Stagehand...

His sire line ended with the death of Perfect Delivery in 1984 (Stagehand > Stage Glitter > Dr. John H > Swift Delivery > Perfect Delivery).
After some analysis from a very skilled member of our community, it has been found that the Derby Trial Graded Handicap was actually run at Santa Anita, and not Churchill Downs.

  • buckpasser · Just for the record, the Kentucky Derby Trial is referred to in these years as Derby Trial Stakes. The Santa Anita Race is always the Derby Trial Handicap. · 993 days ago
  • travel_vic · MANY of these stakes had altered names over the years. YOU HAVE to track down their provenance to accurately know which TODAY was which THEN. · 993 days ago
For withheld reasons, I'm going to stop working on Stagehand's profile. I did get pretty far however, and if anyone wants to pick it up I would be glad to give them some help to get settled in. Stagehand's official document created by me can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GQYwqZ5E5F_P90PpN8LpRDlP4uuS9nH7B2em-m2VNIs/edit#heading=h.y75d93w2j9iy

  • Sullivan · I may continue, I just think it would be nice if we had someone who was continuing. · 997 days ago
  • goblin · Sullivan, I'll always think of you as cocoa; but I share the thoughts expressed above and hope everything is going well in your life. I believe your interest in having this horse admitted to the Hall of Fame is worthy and remarkable for someone your age. · 997 days ago
Woohoo! Stagehand's past performances are complete!

  • LAZMANNICK · Speaking of the Derby Trial. Here's a race that has really fallen off in popularity. Going back, some of the sport's biggest stars, including Citation, ran in this race prior to the Derby. · 1055 days ago
  • buckpasser · Totally agree Laz. Many horses used it as a prep over the track. · 1055 days ago
So, this is what I found re Stagehand: The race you speak of took place on Sept 3, 1938 at Narragansett Park in Rhode Island. It was the 5th race that day - the 'Narragansett Special' 25000 added 1 3/-16th miles for 3 yr old & upward. The 3 yr old won by a length in 1:56.1 over 9 others in field. The horse was part of an entry with 9th pl finisher and paid $4.30 to win. Owner was M. Howard...bred by J.E. Widener...trained by G.H. Sande...ridden by J. Westrope BTW, the track record there was set four yrs prior (almost to the day) by Discovery, also a 3 yr old...carrying same wgt: 119 lbs.
  • Sullivan · Thanks t_v, 9th place finisher was The Chief I think. Did not know about TR -- did he not break it · 1067 days ago
  • Buckpasser · According to my book, Stagehand did not break Discovery's track record in the Special. BUT he broke the track record in the Governor's handicap on Sept. 10 by lowering the nine furlong mark to 1:49 2/5. The previous track record was established in 1935. · 1067 days ago
Stagehand's two year old campaign is complete. Never in his life would he win a race less than a mile, a testament to his stamina and distance ability. Times may seem exceeding slow, but Saratoga and Belmont were very slow in 1937 as well as Empire City has never been a paticullarly fast track.
78 years and he is still the only horse to win the Santa Anita Handicap as a three year old. Beating Seabiscuit, Pompoon, Top Row, Ligaroti, Gosum, and Sceneshifter was something, and then doing it in track record time... The 30lb weight impost probably helped a little bit.

  • Sullivan · Thank you. I play to finish his HRN page today, a summary of his career by Friday and will have contacted Mr. Veitch by the day after Memorial Day. Let us cross our fingers and hope, I find it outrageous that Ashado is considered for the HOF and not Stagehand · 1105 days ago
  • Buckpasser · Keep us posted. Perhaps we can help if needed. · 1105 days ago
