Q of the D : in honor of the Derby, out of the horses that had won the first two legs of the Triple Crown, who do you believe had the ability to win the Triple Crown?

  • travel_vic · muddy tracks were REALLY tiring back then as drainage was nothing like it is today · 293 days ago
  • buckpasser · LAZ. He did lose some shorter races in the mud, but he was in some cases giving the winner well over 20lbs and lost by a length or less. Couple of times it was a nose or a neck. I always think of Exterminator coming into his own on a muddy track when he won the Derby · 293 days ago

I was working Jun 8, 1980 when my sister called to say the Bid was running that day. We both faked sick and met at the track. The Bid had 132 lbs on wet track but won by 4.5 lgs and beat the record set just 30 mins prior by Rich Cream. He also surpassed Affirmed's money mark. WHAT A HORSE !
  • railbird33 · vigors777, thanks for the great sharing, and reminding us what a special and brilliant career this one had. Even a bad day at the track beats a good day at work. · 507 days ago
"In that era of champions, none was as brilliant a 4-year-old as Spectacular Bid in 1980, and one has to go back to '53, when Tom Fool won 10 of 10 races, including New York's triple crown for older horses, to find an equal. In '80 Bid won all nine races he entered. He so dominated that no horse opposed him in the Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park, his final start. He went to the post alone and toured the grounds in a walkover, under Bill Shoemaker, a jockey who rode some of the swiftest horses in history: Swaps, Dr. Fager, Damascus and Forego. Of Spectacular Bid, Shoemaker said simply, "He is the best horse I ever sat on."" -Bill Nack

does anyone know if there is video of the 1979 florida derby if so when your arguing who was the greatest racehorse of all time--- show them that race. there were only two times I got chills down my back watching a horse --- Secretariat at belmont and The Bid in the florida derby he was blocked 3 times almost to a stop once, franklin tried to go to rail and was cut off and cordero is standing up on his horse slowing down so bid has to go back 5 wide and rolls home you can see part of that race at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhqXgUVyZrg but it ionly shows the last quarter

I saw Secretarait, slew, affirmed and the bid at the kentucky derby and also the bid at arlinton park as a 4 year old, it was amusing Bid was1 to 10 favorite carrying 132 pounds read in suntimes where one person had a $100,000 bet on bid at the track- some guy is carrying around $100,000in cash. well anyway Delp had told track officials he didnt want anyother horses around Bid--- so for post parade Bid comes out in front of 40,000 and parades grandstand and than goes to other side of track. than other horses are allowed to come out. They load Bid in first and than bring other horses to gate when they open the gate other horses flyout and Bid just comes out real slow. Delp must have told shoe dont get anywhere near a horse. he was last going around the first two turns and was losing ground at that. you should have heard the crowd murmuring it was such an odd sound. Half way thru the backshoe takes bid 5-7 wide and within a 1/16 he passes um all and was leading going in to the 3rd turn. crowd on its feet and roaring all the way home Set a track record that day that still stands at arlington
In your opinion (since they have somewhat been HRN's Horses of the Week) who was the better racehorse; Spectacular Bid or Seattle Slew? A close friend and I got into a HEATED debate yesterday on this topic (It was debate night :P)..
  • Show All 21 Comments
  • LAZMANNICK · If someone asked my opinion I would definitely say that Spectacular Bid was the better of the two, at least on the track. And like Brian, I still have immense respect for Seattle Slew. Both were great at three though I would say that the Bid’s three year old crop was much more distinguished than that of Slew when you consider that he competed against multi G1 winners, Flying Paster, General Assembly, Coastal and Private Account, etc. Slew’s greatest three year-old opponent was Run Dusty Run, a single G1 winner of the Hopeful at two, and maybe Text, who was much better on grass than dirt. At four they both had amazing careers, though once again I would put the Bid’s ahead of Slew’s. Slew’s greatest victory was the Marlboro Inv. when he defeated Affirmed while giving him 4 lbs. in 1.45 4/5ths at Belmont in one-turn 9 furlong race. His greatest race, however, at least in my opinion, was his nose defeat to Exceller in an amazing performance for the ages, the 1978 JCGC. He was one for two at 12F and carried as much as 134 lbs. to victory in his final race, the G3 Winchester. The Bid’s four year old season was incredible. He went 9 for 9 including his walkover in the Woodward; set the world’s record for 10F on dirt in 1.57 4/5; won the then G1 9F Californian in 1.45 4/5 on a two-turn track matching Slew’s time in a one-turn race; won the 7F G2 Malibu in a track record 1.20 flat which still ranks as one of the fastest ever 7F races on dirt; won with weights ranging from 130 to 132 lbs. five times; and won 5 G1 races to Slew’s 2. It doesn’t get any better than that. · 578 days ago

should have won the Triple Crown...
I flew to see Bid in the Holly GOld CUp only to find they scratched him the morning of the race. Uploaded the sign we all saw that afternoon to his photo library here about his final west coast work

  • travel_vic · He did take a lot of gried for that ride, but it was another of MANY when all the riders mentally said the same thing; "That colt on the lead WILL come back to us late." MANY MANY times they just do not come back, but get so far out front that the tiring closers (who have to OVERCOME the pacesetter) just can't do it. · 816 days ago
The best horse I ever saw who won the first two legs of the Triple Crown only to lose the Belmont was, without question, Spectacular Bid.

  • airedale2008 · True, buckpasser. Native Dancer was the best horse in his Derby, but could not overcome two fouls and a poor ride from Eric Guerin. The fast closing Native Dancer only missed becoming the first undefeated American colt since Colin with a loss by a short head to Dark Star. · 818 days ago
  • travel_vic · Bid, the ONLY reason Buddy Delp is a household word to racing fans. THIS horse made this rider. Must have been very very good with RONNIE FRANKLIN in the irons. "Saftery Pin?" I''l just bet! · 818 days ago
I believe he didn't really come into his own until his 4yo season. Great horse but had no partner to showcase his greatness.Dr.Fager had Damascus or they had each other. Affirmed had Alydar, Sunday Silence has Easy Goer, etc.Imagine fred Astaire without Ginger Rodgers. One of the few great ones I never got to see personally.New York State is a nice place to live, sooner or later all the great ones come if possible, Thoroughbred and Standardbred.
A great horse, but his competition in 1980 was far weaker than the 1988 campaign of Alysheba's. The Bid was very "hyped" by the media, and well deserved. But he NEVER beat a great horse. Flying Paster was very good and that was the best horse he ever beat.

  • footlick · These are Alysheba's foes in his 4 yr old year- Ferdinand, Bet Twice, Lost Code, Forty Niner, Seeking the Gold, Cutlass Reality, Waquoit........ which of these would be considered a "great" horse?????? · 1004 days ago
  • derbywars · Saw them many times and loved them both, but sorry, Alysheba was not the 2yo, 3yo, nor 4yo that Spectacular Bid was. · 1004 days ago
