  • medlocke · I'd very much like to see Gio Ponti notch a win under his belt this season. But I believe he's going to have beat another Aidan O'Brien trained horse from Ireland to do it? Zoffany, who is a stablemate to Cape Blanco, who's beaten Gio Ponti twice this season is coming over from Ireland for the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile. Very talented 3yr.old son of Dansili who was a G1 winner in Ireland as 2yr.old in 2010. He's finished 2nd in two European G1 races this season. He was beaten by 3/4 of length by Frankel at Ascot in the G1 St James's Palace Stakes, and he was beaten by a head in France in the G1 Prix Jean-Prat by another very talented 3yr.old Juddmonte colt, Mutual Trust. Zoffany has the distinction of being the horse that came closer than any other this season to beating Frankel. When Frankel was starting paddle at the end of the St James's Palace Stakes, and Zoffany flew home late to finish to within 3/4 of a length of Frankel. Which was a monster run, IMO. I believe Gio Ponti and Zoffany will be the 2 class horses in the Shadwell Turf Mile. But unlike against Cape Blanco, I feel like Gio Ponti has the ability to beat Zoffany in this race. Grand Adventure, who captured the most lucrative win of his career in last year's King Edward Stakes, is back to defend his title in the one-mile turf event worth $250,000 at Woodbine June 25. The King Edward, which attracted 11 older runners, highlights the opening card of Queen's Plate weekend. Th...Read More
Get Stormy dictated the pace and was never seriously threatened in a 2-3/4 length tally in the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland on Friday. Rainy weather produced a good turf course and Get Stormy set tepid splits of :24.61, :49.31, and 1:14.01. Workin for Hops tracked the pacesetter throughout...Read More
Court Vision, runner-up in last year's Maker's Mark Mile, is back for more in the 2011 renewal of the flat mile grade one turf event at Keeneland on Friday. The six-year-old horse, trained by Rick Dutrow, packs a strong late kick when on his game. He has captured two of his last ten starts and both ...Read More
As each successive split was posted on the timer during the running of Sunday’s $150,000 Canadian Turf at Gulfstream Park, it seemed the chances of pacesetter Little Mike winning the race was getting increasing smaller. But despite setting a lightning fast pace, Little Mike had more than enough left...Read More

Gio Ponti has been caught nearing the wire three times during a tough-luck campaign in 2010. The dual champion finally had enough of that, this time doing a little catching of his own. Cutting back to one mile for the first time all year, Gio Ponti niftily split horses in deep stretch under Ramon Do...Read More

  • mdracing69 · Gio Ponti ran a nice race but was not the most impressive turf mile winner at Keeneland on Saturday. Proviso ran a bit faster and finished strong in her G1 First Lady triumph. She beat Grade 1 males at Santa Anita earlier this year. As for Gio Ponti, I agree that ten furlongs is his best distance and I would try the BC Classic. All it takes is a bad draw and his Mile hopes would be dashed. · 596 days ago ·

  • cugel the clever · Tough spot for this horse, but I think he has a better shot at the BC Mile. Turf is his best surface and he's probably the #3 ranked tuf miler right now, behind Goldikova and Proviso. So, with racing luck, he stands a chance in the BC Mile. But, for the BC Classic, he's definately an outsider. He couldn't beat Z last year in the Classic on polytrack; so what chance does he have on dirt against Z and a much stronger field of males than last year's Classic. All of Z, QR, Blame, LAL, and Haynesfield ave better shots in the Classic that Gio Ponti. · 595 days ago ·

APPLETON Stakes Quotes Roger Attfield (Society’s Chairman) – “He’s had his share of problems over the years, which explains why he hasn’t run that many times (20), but I space his races and give him time when he needs it, and he runs his race for us just about every time.
