What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Snow Chief...

The tradition of California-bred Thoroughbred runners is a grand one. Horses the ilk of Morvich, Bed o’ Roses, Determine, Swaps, T.V. Lark, Decidedly, Hill Rise, Native Diver, Quicken Tree, Ancient Title, Crystal Water, Flying Paster, Snow Chief, Best Pal, Free House, Tiznow, Lava Man and Acclamatio...Read More
Snow Chief was a Classic winner and an American champion. The California bred, near black colt was a consistent and dominant star in 1985 through 1987. He was the all-time leading California bred earner until surpassed by Best Pal, and still is fourth only behind Tiznow, Best Pal and Lava Man...Read More

  • travel_vic · the loigic is that you continually RAID parimutuel pools when there are discrepancies......I have gone through entire cards at Oaklawn and did not miss a payout..Some were little more than a push, but it was EVERY race...After 14 in a row, I knew I found the wagering mecca for that type of wager. · 269 days ago ·

  • travel_vic · that of course was 14 WAGERS in a row, not 14 races in a row...Many with more than 3 FTS or contests were the distirbution of wagering is too even do not qualify as wagering opportunities. · 269 days ago ·

Great winner's circle picture tv. You can also see Ferdinand running second. Thanks.
To me, the way Shackleford ran with his head a little lower always reminded me of Snow Chief. Both were so full of heart.
  • travel_vic · First Cal-bred millionaire. Well managed animal. Florida Derby and Preakness were great ones as I was able to purchase the photos of both. Two nice old guys, WHO HAD PAID THEIR DUES in racing owned him as well. · 511 days ago ·

What a tough little guy that defied the odds, literally. I loved watching him run.

  • footlick · It still is the fastest dirt mile ever by a filly as far as I know. Her splits were amazing in the Silver Screen. She was not fashionably bred as far as I remember. She certainly ran them off their feet. · 605 days ago ·

Bottom line is, Derby Day just wasn’t their day. For a not-insignificant number of Preakness winners, the disappointment of their efforts two weeks beforehand in the Kentucky Derby sometimes has been difficult to rationalize. Some, such as Snow Chief (1986), Point Given (2001), and Lookin At Lucky (...Read More
I do wish Snow Chief's Strub Stakes was in his list of races. Without a pace setter like Groovy, he got the mile and a quarter . And did it in a sharp time as well I 2 minutes flat.
The Pennsylvania Derby was first run in 1979 at Keystone on Memorial Day with the Woody Stephens trained Smarten taking the winners share of the $100,000 purse. In 1981 the race became a grade three stake.Read More

  • AndyScoggin · Spearfish got claimed from us after about a year and then claimed again. That trainer got him to climb the claiming ladder and win 4 races in a very short period of time. Spearfish was them claimed and disappeared forever. We eventually heard what happened. It is sad that there are a few trainers that don't care about the condition of their horses. I really do believe that those types are the exceptions in racing and that most trainers do care about their horses. · 942 days ago ·

Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Snow Chief, the only living California-bred to have won a Triple Crown race, died on Saturday at Eagle Oak Ranch in Paso Robles, California. After finishing 11th as the 2.10-to-1 favorite in the 1986 Kentucky Derby (G1), which was won by Ferdinand, Snow Chief bounced bac...Read More
