When you’re a single man on Christmas Eve & you’ve made a habit for years of declining everyone else’s pitied invitations for a friendly holiday gathering, you learn to find things to do. Tonight was easy. Past performances for opening day at Santa Anita in hand. Let’s dig in.Read More

Between the two of them, Bob Baffert and Steve Asmussen have seven of the 11 horses entered in the Grade I Malibu Stakes, Santa Anita’s opening day feature on Monday. Perfect trip in his last race, looked wiped out after race.
Prayer For Relief has turned into a decent sort for Bob Baffert. He followed up prominent throughout wins in the G3 Iowa Derby and G2 West Virginia Derby with an easy wire job in the G2 Super Derby (98 BSF). I am not sure how good he is since he was basically handed the Louisiana Downs showcase afte...Read More
The Grade 1 Travers, to be run at Saratoga on Saturday, August 27, is shaping up as the race of the summer with Preakness hero Shackleford, Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice, Haskell winner Coil, and Belmont runner-up and Jim Dandy hero Stay Thirsty. Trainer Bob Baffert has not fully committed to t...Read More
The Grade 1 Haskell was the deepest 3yo graded route of the summer with the Preakness and Belmont winners, and my number one ranked (since 6-29) 3yo Coil proved that his Swaps defeat was nothing more than a slight detour. He is indeed the top sophomore in the land following a game late running victo...Read More
My number one ranked three-year-old Coil was run down by 19-1 outsider Dreamy Kid in Saturday’s Grade 2 Swaps at Hollywood Park. Dreamy Kid, trained by Neil Drysdale, is a late blooming son of Lemon Drop Kid, and the blinkers really seemed to help him focus. He earned a solid 96 BSF for his rallying...Read More
Locally-based Indiano, last year's champion 2-year-old in Panama, earned his first graded stakes victory in the United States with a decisive win in the Grade 2, $200,000 Carry Back July 9 at Calder Casino & Race Course. SASSY IMAGE (Broken Vow), like numerous professional sports teams, is a world-beater at home but highly vulnerable when she hits the road. However, a road win Saturday in the $350,000 Princess Rooney H. (G1) at Calder would greatly enhance her prospects for an Eclipse Award as champion female sprint...Read More
Astrology seemed poised for a big second half of 2011 and the consistent son of A.P. Indy was heavily backed in the Iowa Derby. The Preakness show finisher sat a wide stalking trip and came up empty in a Prairie Meadows headscratcher. He is now winless in four starts this year. Astrology’s loss was ...Read More
The Triple Crown series is over but my top ten list continues and the race for the three-year-old championship is very much up for grabs. Owner Marsha Naify and trainer Julio Canani made it two stakes wins in a span of less than 24 hours when Givine captured the $73,250 Great Lady M. Kentucky Derby contender  workouts for today (Sunday, March 13)  (with HRN Derby rankings):   Today's Derby contender works included a four furlong breeze from Fountain of Youth hero Soldat. He goes next in the April 3 Florida Derby. J P’s Gusto drilled a strong five furlong bullet a...Read More
  • ajump08 · J P's Gusto should not be forgotten in the Rebel. Many will look at the likes of Astrology, Sway Away, Elite Alex, Alternation, and Archarcharch; and throw this one out saying he's simply not a two turn horse. J P is very versitile, and arguably could have been the best of the Southwest with his troubled trip. He's obviously thriving in Arkansas with his bullet work today in 59.40. · 441 days ago ·

  • cigar · To Honor And Serve is likely facing a tough group in the Florida Derby, that is pretty salty with speed. Dialed In might be the one to watch in that one. · 447 days ago ·

  • ajump08 · Any word if Neil Howard's two colts, Mahcen and Wilkinson, worked together. The time was the same, and I like to know who the trainer puts on the outside in these sort of works. The one on the outside is typically the better of the two, best example of this is the Uncle Mo, Stay Thirsty tandem. The San Felipe is probably going to be the hardest prep race to handicap we've seen or will see, with a mixed combination of proven talent, unexperienced promise, early speed, and late speed. I expect the pace to be hot, probably the best case scenario for Jaycito, but he'll still have to pass a lot of very talented colts on a speed biased track. The San Felipe will probably be one of those races we will look back at this Summer and say "wow, look at all of the talent that came from that race". As for the other "real" prep this Saturday, the Tampa Bay Derby, the field is actually looking a bit weak. Again led by Brethren, and I'd say the next most likely colt to make an impact down the road is the rapidly improving Nafzger colt, Beamer. Unless Uncle Mo is forced to jump ship, it looks like it could be another walk over for Brethren. · 447 days ago ·

  • ArturoLaguna · Just curious what equine/handicapping credentials Mr. dubby30 possess to question the training methods of Bob Baffert . With 3 Kentucky Derby wins to his name and several other winners in the other legs of the triple, Baffert's training modus operandi seem to work. As Steve Haskins of The Bloodhorse wrote: "Leave the training to the trainers" · 452 days ago ·

  • 12 Clip · Astrology runs like a plodder. I don't even think he's worth talking about at the present moment. I don't think there is anybody in Steve Asmussen's stable that will be good enough to even make the Derby this season. Steve is a great trainer, and his horses are still getting used to their environment in So. Cal. As for Bob Baffert, it's a known fact that he likes to get the most out of his horses in the morning. Whether that's a waste of a horse is obviously up for debate. It's hard to knock Bafferts production in the 3-year-old series over the past two decades. · 452 days ago ·

  • ajump08 · No problem, Awesome Patriot is cut out to be a good one. Beat Riveting Reason in an Allowance, RR most recently was nosed out of winning the Robet B. Lewis. This may be Baffert's biggest Derby hope actually, unless Jaycito overcomes the adversity that's surrounded him thus far in his career: bolting in BC Juvenile, trainer change, missed works, missed races, and eventually not running untill at least March. · 460 days ago ·
