Departing says goodbye to Illinois Derby foes
There was no getting around the favorites in yesterdays features at Hawthorne. I could not find much of a way around Departing in the feature and neither could the betting public. The lightly-raced War Front gelding was sent off at 19-10, bet down from his morning line odds of 7/2. Ground Transport ...

Hope he wins the Preakness by 10 lengths and the Belmont by 15. It would serve the weasles from Churchill Downs Inc. right.

Iit was very interesting to see Departing take care of business with relative ease from PP 13. As they say "hindsight is 20/20" but I can't help but think he would have been capable of doing the same from PP 14 in the Risen Star. If he didn't scratch that race and opt for the Texas Heritage Stakes maybe he would be running in the 139th KyDerby. Oh well, he sure looked good yesterday and will be fun to watch moving forward.

I was pleased to see his romp in the ILL Derby. @kentuckyderbypost. As someone who had this guy #5 on my famous Sweet 16 on 3/24, I also believe he should be in the Derby... I find him to be one of the best of this crop... Yep. Call me crazy!

What a pissy comment, tv... I think you should back that statement up? I posted on NUMEROUS occasions before the race that Departing was my pick. 80% of my cashing (guessed) posted on here are posted before the fact... It's just the few after the fact ones you jump on... I don't share my best hits on here anyway (when I hit the Pick 4 at GP, I didn't say a thing) so shut your mouth.. Quotes on me picking him on my next post.

Quote #1, posted three days before the race: "I think Departing will win the ILL Derby. I'm going to the Preakness, I'd love to see him. ".... Quote #2, posted two days before race: "He should overcome the bad post... I hold high expectations for this one... And I don't think he's going to let me down.".... Quote #3, posted two days before race: "He should crush... Only thing holding him back is the post... You better believe I'm betting $$$$$$$$$$$$$ on him. "..... Quote #4, posted 5 minutes before post: "He's my pick."..... Maybe look for proof I posted it after the fact, even though I have now given you four quotes, all suggesting he was my pick, and not so vaguely... He was #5 on my Sweet 16, look it up (Rafirox's Pre-Sunland Sweet 16).... That was an idiotic, rude comment. Considering I clearly, like usual, posted beforehand.

Rafi, you always post your picks and always email your picks to me as well. 99% of the people read your picks prior to every race, 1% do not.

I know! I email some of my picks to you and no one else sees. I know there are some I don't post beforehand. I probably make 20-30 bets a week, I don't like posting all of them. There have DEFINITELY been cases where I post after the fact, but the majority is before. TV never comments on my beforehand picks, just my after the fact bets... It's bullshit either way, as either way, I hit the race.

Other people on this site I know in 'real life' texted me they got it.I haven't got mine either... Last time I got text from Carlos, it said he was having trouble and when he sent it to certain emails it would give him the "FAILURE NOTICE" message... I think it was sysonby's email. Maybe check again? I texted him and he said he tried again... anyone else who is in contact with him, have you got an email, yet?

Rafi, if you expect people on HRN ot believe your picks, you have to post them. Not "Departing will win" But "I like Departing in the Illinois Derby and will bet $10 on him to win"

Here's what, cocoa. I don't usually say what I bet, but I don't post picks, then if they win, say I had $100 on them, but if they lose it was only $2 or I skipped the race. Congrats for the win picks, all. I'm not in your wallets. I can see from the payouts if someone had a cha-ching hit. If they need to times that by 100? Sometimes that is just seen as silliness/unsubstantiated boasting.

Good, sysonby. I got them too. I don't know about you, but aren't you laughing your behind off when people say "He was banned because he was a double acunter." LOL... Yeah. That's an accusation with not even the slightest claim or evidence. He reads here, and he's getting really annoyed about it. Also, Sysonby, the reason he said he left was very disturbing and says a lot of us as a community. I can send it to you, if you want. It was a disturbing paragrah about us as a community. I hate to admit it, but, it was 100% accurate.

Great comments Sysonby! I was thinking the same thing. Rafi MUST post his picks ans dollar amount or he will be BLASTED for not conforming to the rules set to him and only him. Pitiful. And as far as Railbird, I think his workout info is gold and anyone who gave him crap is just downright insane for not wanting that information 2 weeks before the big day. I am so grateful that he is taking the time to email this info out and thanx to Rafi for introducing him.

Sysonby. Your first post. I agree with you. I know I partly bring part of it to myself. It is not intentional, but rather it is my personality (brag when I win, cry when I lose) jk :). Your second post. I can't disagree with him either. It's not just him, but several people who get bullied. It is disgusting, to even a pro like himself, that he can find the community to be unwelcoming. You'd think if people actually cared about the sport, and learning, they'd love to have such a professional horsemen like him on the site. I urged him to join the site, and offer insight on the Derby training, but he spent two days and told me "i can't take it no more."... Also, for his sake, I encouraged him to get off the site. If people don't want or like his insight? Too bad for them. I still have it, as do others, over email. I agree about the several individuals present who are truly intriguied by the sport, are willing to learn more, and willing to distiributue what they know. I love reading Buckpasser, LAZ, Goblin, yourself, Lisa, Amino, Dressage, etc, etc. I love the insight, especially since some on here are much more knowledgable than me, and they teach me. If I were as knowledgable as Carlos, I would have gotten out by now. He knows enough to be able to get off, I need the info that Buckpasser, LAZ, et hand out on a daily basis. I fully support his dicision, but I would've liked him to stay longer- and his immediate departure shows how ugly we are as a community.

1st time lasix just seals the deal with me for Departing. He should romp. Like Departing, Ground Transport did not have the greatest trip in the LA Derby, so I like him coming home 2nd. I'm looking for a big race from Dewey Square to get 3rd, and Siete De Oros is ultra consistent to round out the super.

Furosemide the biggest LIE every incorporated into the racing game. Decreased platelet adhesion (ONE OF THE BIG side effects of Bute), in other words PROMOTE bleeding and then come along and think (EVEN while Bute is still in the system) it will not create even more capillary fagility and the loss the the plug function that platelets are called in to do. Horse may improve, but it won't be because of Lasix....In objective studies of final times, only geldings showed any, and that was barely statistically significant.....No one questions the dogma even though it continues to leach Calcium ions out of newly laid down bone in babies....Pharmacological insanity over which as a human practitioner might lose their license

travel_vic: I understand the drug interaction. The studies I was referring to were the "objective studies of final times." Also, believing in aliens and believing that a loop diuretic makes horse run faster are two far different things. If your argument is that everyone should not only focus on furosemide but also phenylbutazone, et al, then I'm for it. If not, you will need to clarify for me.

Just for the record, I don't recall ever saying Departing is going to run faster because he's getting lasix. From a handicapping angle (all handicappers understand that's all we have to go on most of the time to set us apart from the crowd), first time lasix is usually a sign that something did not go right in the last race, and they're attempting to fix it. Thus I view it as a "drug" that prevents problems, not a performance enhancer like steroids. That is all.

Try Not To Overanalyze the Gotham
The Derby Trail heads north to the The Big Apple for its only legitimate (i.e. Derby point system) prep race of the weekend. Do you think Johnny Velazquez took the mount on Overanalyze, leaving warm sunny Florida for chilly New York just because he could also take in a Broadway show?

I decided to put a pre-scratch P6 together. I'm positive there will be some scratches though. My P6 spread ticket is 4-1,8 w 1,4-3 w 2,4 w 2,9 w 1,7-3 w 4-1,7. If anyone wants to know how spread tix work, just let me know. Just like everything in life, they have their positives and their negatives, but I like them to include "what-if" options.

Should be Brian's Horse of the Week! Most impressive of the Derby prep winners this day! Flashback did what he was supposed to do, but Revolutionary overcame trouble, didn't fold when he was behind a wall of horses, patiently waited for a hole to open and he threaded his way to an amazing victory. Isn't that the kind of horse you want in a race like the KY Derby?

That final time of !:44 and change leaves something to be desired and I for one was not impressed at all, even with the so called trouble he had, but if that is what has to be said for his narrow win to make the East feel like they have something to root for come the first Sat in May then let's roll with it and take a wait and see approach and let time dictate just how good this one is suppose to be.

I would hardly call him green. He did everything his jockey asked him to do and was professional about it. And it's not just the east coasters impressed with him. I'm from the west, and loved what I saw in him today. His performance and him proving that he can stand dirt in his face and a bad trip with a nice kick when he finally got through has put him in my top 3 for the Derby. As far as time goes, you can definitely blame that on that trip. If he'd had a better trip I'm pretty damn sure he would of rocketed past all of them.

I'm not thrilled about Overanalyzed or Vyjack... for the Derby. So it's fine that either wins this one since Big Red is the only one to win the Gotham and KY Derby. Would like to see Elnaawi give a good account of himself then return to win the Wood.

At this point, if a horse doesn't already have points, the 10-4-2-1 races are irrelevant when it comes to qualifying for the Derby. These guys are going to have to score in the 50 or 100 pointers to make the field.

"I agree 100% about picking & choosing your spots, but as a service to HRN readers, I provide my opinions on Derby preps as well as MD races. To think that in every one of those races, my opinion MUST NOT be the M/L favorite is insane."Gary Quill/Yes, your position is much different than someone making a wager only for themselves. As you stated you have other considerations which would seem apparent, but obviosly there not. After a while you'll get used to having to explain what should be an easy assumption. I'm a little tired so I didn't look at all your plays but, your selection and wagering structure on the SAM F. DAVIS was something I especially liked. Hope you don't mind, but if you did, or were to wager on that race privately (SAM F. DAVIS) without regard to your article, would you have included the superfecta? Anyway nice job. I'll keep you on my radar.

I like the chart Matt. Gives good perspective as to the "what if's". Now WHY the Withers was excluded is beyond me. My guess is NY has plenty others (w/ points) later on the Trail. It's interesting that JC comes to NY to ride REVOLUTIONARY. Obviuously, the thoughts are for the bigger Derby Points down the road. I can hear Pletcher now, "we don't need no stinkin' points".

@george.obrien.3557, The horses who would not have made the Derby field last year were Liaison, Done Talking, and Trinniberg according to this Thoroughbred Times article. This information is located in the very last paragraph, but there is much more to the article, including points earned by past Derby winners over the last 15 years. http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2012/06/14/points-based-system-will-determine-kentucky-derby-field.aspx

He's an undeniably talented colt, and I anticipate his spring season. That said, his sire is sprinter Into Mischief, and his grandsire if Harlan’s Holiday, who finished second in multiple 10 furlong stakes, but seemed to run his best at 9 furlongs. Goldencents’ dam is Golden Works, who found her success sprinting in the claiming ranks. His broodmare sire is Banker’s Gold, who won on occasion 9 furlongs, but did his best running at shorter distances. I really like him at his current distance, but I'll keep my money to myself when things get long. Of course, you've always got a Smarty Jones or War Emblem who screws things up for us pedigree geeks!
