The day I got to see my all-time favorite horse – Riva Ridge
Riva Ridge was the horse that got me interested in horse racing. To this day, he is still my all-time favorite. This is the story of my love affair with the “other” big, beautiful stallion from Meadow Stable.

Great story and everything, but maybe you should get your facts right!! Riva Ridge ran in the Triple Crown Races in 1972, the year before his legendary stable mate which would have put him at 3 yrs old then. So tell me how he was in 1971 then? Maybe you should have someone edit your work before you post it

Loved the story, brought back alot of memories. Was sad to read that Gun Bow was sent to Japan and no one knows what happened to him. I remember him racing against Kelso and also remember his great daughter Pistol Packer. I hope he didnot end up like Ferdinand

Well done Rick! Sadly I didn't get the chance to visit any farms while I was there for the BC. I really wanted to see Awad at Old Friends before he passed, since he was one of my all time favorites, but I'm hoping to visit some of the current stars in the coming years.

We should all be so lucky to see as to meet our Rivas. He was the one who saved the farm, as wonderful as all that and more. And agree about the running in tandem-very companiable- before people and all else stepped in and the Big Red had to move on.

Erase one and paste in that I am THRILLED for Jackson Bend, who I ADORE, John Velazquez, who I adore, Nick Zito and all the others. And huge thx John V. for the thrilling excellent ride you gave Hollinger, Roger Attfield and owners. Oh to have been there.

Lets just settle this now: Him and Man O' War were both amazing horses, and of equal greatness. No matter what their "ranking" they were both legends and one of the best if not the best, of their time.

Two days ago he was at 9.36 and today he's down to 9.34. It looks like the Man O' War maniacs are purposely giving him low scores just to get Man O' War - who doesn't deserve to be - back to number one. Seriously, if you give Secretariat less than a 10 you don't belong on a racing forum that solicits fans' opinions.

It's not necessarily just Man o'War fans. It's every fan of a horse that they decided is much better than Secretariat. Rating a horse based on their past accomplishments is a subjective matter, and sometimes very biased. However, everyone is entitled to their opinion (although I would undoubtedly rate Secretariat the best of the best).

jackie999, It is the fact that this racing forum does solicit opinions that allows you to post your OPINION on the rating of secretariat. If everyone had to rate him a 10, having him in the ranking system would be a moot point would it not?

But keep in mind all of his races from the 11th to 21st he won were over 1 mile, and he DOMINATED everyone he raced against, exept for one horse, who was a fluke (No offense to Upset).

Big Red the first was the greatest racehorse to set foot on a track besides Kincsem, who was the greatest of all time. In my opinion, anyway. Man O War never ever ran a bad race and blew his competition away every time. When he lost to Upset, he was facing the wrong way at the start of the race. (no starting gates, just a walk-up.

It is very hard to compare two horses from different decade. Any comparison would be subjective...Both of them were great horses in their time. Plus, it is impossible to prove who will win a race since they were about 5 decade apart.

I agree it is very hard to compare horses from different eras. Also Man O' War never met Exterminator whom many old timers felt would have beaten Big Red hands down. Even Sam Riddle was afraid of meeting Exterminator. He withdrew Big Red from the Saratoga Cup when it was Announced that Exterminator would compete.

The tracks nowadays are MILES faster, the horses have aluminum and not steel shoes, conditioning is better, nutrtion is better and the tracks bounce much more than the twenties.

some of you folks are forgetting the great citation, who had a higher winning percentage in twice as many races traveling all over the usa. sham was a perpetual bridesmaid. he wasn't anything close to the horse noor was, even with the second fastest time in the derby. horses in that era (40s,50s) raced twice as much for relatively smaller purses.

@ buckpasser- from what I understand, Exterminator was invited to run in the Man O War/Sir Barton race, but the owner couldn't come to an agreement with the track connections. He ran the next day instead. I think Man O War would have run against him there. Do you know the weights assigned for the Saratoga Cup? It wold be interesting to see what the weight spread would have been and also what was holding Exterminator's connections back from entering the Man O War/Sir Barton race.

T_V your friend along with many others claimed the same for almost every race horse they didn't like, only so much you can do with dirt and if anything would probably make it better or worse for all not just one. For example I heard about ten times this year's BC was adjusted for closers.

@likin sparks- I was at Arlington Park for Buckpasser's WR and Dr Fager's WR and I can tell you for a fact that the track was souped up both times. Nothing against either of those horses who are both legends, but AP knew that there could be WR times. Water didn't even soak into the track the day Dr Fager ran. Tracks can certainly be souped up.

To foot lick. It was my understanding that as a weight for age Exterminator would have carried more than Man o war. My grandfather told me that Exterminator was assigned 130. I am not sure of this. But Exterminator won 4 Saratoga cups at a mile and three quarters. There was a great deal of disagreement over the choice of track for the match race with Man O' War and Sir Barton. Woodbine was annoyed they were not chosen. Also the track was very hard and not suited to Sir Barton and SIr Barton was carrying more weight than Man o war . I believe he carried six pounds more. Also there were issues of who was going to ride Sir Barton. His connections wanted Clarence Kummer, but he was going to ride Man o war. Johnny Loftus had his license revoked so they settled on Frank Keogh.

To foot lick: kilmer wanted the match race run at a mile and a half and as a handicap and not weight for age . Man o war' s connections had no problem with the added distance but would not do a handicap situation so Exterminator was withdrawn.

@ bucjpasser- thanks for the info. I didn't know whether the Saratoga Cup was weight for age or handicap. It just seems strange to me that Riddle would be afraid to face any horse with Man O War. He may have wanted the conditions to be ideal, but then you can say the same for Exterminator's connections on the running of the "match race". Thanks again for the info. They both were excellent animals.

ZPP- Yes I have read the book, along with every horse racing book I have been able to get my hands on. And I think Man O' War was just as good as Secretariat, if not better. And it kills me to say that because Secretariat is my favorite horse of all time, and that will ever race. I even wrote to Ms. Chenery. Sure, Secretariat broke records, and smothered most of the horses he raced against, but Man O' War was never let run, not all the way. His owner didn't want him to hurt himself, that is how much horse they knew he had in him. In one of his starts, he got hurt and stumbled, but he still won by quite some legnths. So, we will never know who is faster, and I think that is a good thing, because if we did let them have a match races, I'm afraid someone would get hurt, with all that speed in only 2 horses. Therefore, I conclude that they will be equals, for, no one will ever know who was faster.

I really don't think Man O War was better. The race the won by 100 lengths was against a horse that ran the day before. Riddle avoided racing against the great gelding Exterminator so he didn't even race one of the greatest of his time.

You got to be kidding@ Look at the stats.. Secretariat would have beat Man O Wars butt! If Big Red would have been allowed to keep training and racing, He would have smashed every record ever made! I am so saddened that Ms Penny did not allow him to continue racing. It was a travesty to horse racing and hurt Secretariat so much!

Oh, it depends on the surface, the distance, the track, the jockeys... I can't even start to compare them! I personally believe Man O' War was better, but in '73 I don't think anyone was going to catch Secretariat, although Man O' War would have given him a run for his money.

It’s difficult to separate both based on their wins. Both in their own way were extremely impressive when they won. However, maybe they can be properly measured in the races they lost. MOW’s lone loss was because he wasn’t ready at the start. He lost to Upset by half a length, a horse he defeated in the race immediately preceding that loss and also in a race immediately after that loss making me feel that he would have been undefeated without the start incident. Secretariat loss races against horses that I doubt would have been good enough to defeat MOW. To me their position in history will always be a wash.

IMO, on the day Secretariat won the 1973 Belmont Stakes, there's never been, nor will there likely never be a horse on the planet that could've come to within 10 length's of Secretariat that day. Man O' War included. But top to bottom, I'd give a slight edge to Man O' War. He once beat a horse by 100 lengths in a race, and he also completely destroyed America's first Triple Crown winner, Sir Barton, in a head to head match race. But I do think Secretariat's 73' Belmont will stand the test of time as the greatest single race ever run by a horse. In any country. JMO.

It’s difficult to use race times as a barometer. Tracks surfaces were different over the years. The one thing that can possibly be a way of measuring their brilliance is weight. Secretariat never carried more than scale weight and in the Marlboro Invitational Handicap he was actually assigned less weight than both Cougar and Riva Ridge. When Secretariat was a two year old he never carried more than 122 lbs. MOW carried 130 lbs. six straight times at two and in his lone loss he carried 130 to Upset’s 115. This is an argument that will never be settled and rightly so. Who was best we’ll never know, but it’s fun looking back through their records and in doing so seeing just how brilliant both actually were.

It is incredibly difficult because there are always horses that you think shouldn't be omitted, like Buckpasser, but then you have to think who to omit, and you can't reasonably omit any.

No Affirmed??? He had to beat the great Alydar3 times to win his tripple crown. 23 of 29 and 4 of those losses were to Seatle Slew and Alydar

Affirmed was very close to making the list, very close! I had the pleasure of seeing Spectacular Bid, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed countless times in person, and my ranking of the three stands.

I think Secretariat should be #1. But, both Secretariat and Man o' War had fairly short careers by the standards of their day, so I bow to an expert's (Zatt) opinion that the great Man o' War still holds the #1 spot. However, Kelso's 5-year run at HOY alone commands almost a separate list of horses that had more than a year and a half careers!!! If longevity on the track, setting records (where is Round Table, who always seems to be overlooked) don't count for something, then does any list really mean anything?

Where the heck is John Henry!!!!! Duh! If a horse ever should be on a top 10 list, he has to be included. My gosh, retired at 10! 83 starts! On the turf or on the dirt, he was unbelievable! Twice won the Arlington Million, twice HOY, Jocky Club Gold Cup when it was 1 1/2 mi! Don't know how he could have distinguished himself any better.

I would Secretariat ahead of Man O War....Man O War ran tons of race with only one competitor. Seem to me that the competition back then wasn't that great to make other owner scared of him. If he had a competitor like Sham, I would have rate him #1.

I don't agree with anyone who says Secretariat wasn't head and shoulders above the rest.He is not my favorite but he is MY top choice.I do agree on the three Reds on top though, hard to argue against that.At 4 Bid was nothing short of Spectacular and I believe could have run heads up with Secretariat. That's the only horse in my mind that I can say that about but again just another opinion.

How many horses could set a World Record for 2 miles on dirt and then come back in 11 days and set an American track record on grass for a mile and one half? He ran the mile and one half a fifth of a second faster than Secretariat's Belmont Stakes. Secretariat ran around 2 turns. Kelso ran around 3 turns. My vote goes with Cot Campbell, Joe Hirsch and David Alexander for Kelso as the greatest!

I think it's hard to determine whether Man O' War or Secretariat is top of the century because of factors such as the way the start of the race was (no starting gate with Man O' War) and the comments that he never was totally released to run full out.

No argument from me. I might place Count Fleet a little higher. Two honorable mentions are Buckpasser and Round Table. If Buckpasser wouldn’t have been injured and would have competed in the TC races (the same year he won 13 in a row) I have no doubt he would have won the TC (he defeated the winners of all three races that year), and in doing so he would be considered probably in the top six or seven. Round Table raced in what is arguably the best three year old crop ever in N/A. He won carrying huge weights, at distances as short as 4F and as long as 13F, and was probably one of America’s all time best turf horses though he is possibly best remembered for his prowess on dirt. Certainly a great lot of horses.

After knowing all the details, it is a very sad thing and tremendous disjustice to Big Red that she retired him instead of racing him.. The one thing he loved more than anything was to run. She retired him (for money) and deprived him and all of us of seeing what he was really capable of.

I would have love to see Red run a couple years more but from Penny family was in big debt to the government for inheritance tax. Syndicating him was her only option or sell him to the man that made the wrong choice in the coin task. I would have settle to him run as a 4 year old which she could have put in the syndicate clause. No, she wasn't there when he died. She had a closer attachment to Riva Ridge.

Yes the taxes on her fathers estate was the reason she syndicated him, but as I understand it she could get investors unless agreed to only racing him the two years. One has to remember this was a syndicate for a 2 yr. old who if he had been like other Bold Ruler's , Queen of the Stage, Bold Lad, vitriolic, successor etc come to mind never had a three yr. old season like their two yr old. So it was a gamble for the investors as well. As I understand that Claiborne put Secretariat to sleep without informing her. According to her, she was unaware of how severe his laminitis was.

Collecting Horse Racing Memories
Monmouth Park’s biggest day of the year is the Haskell. There is great racing and a really big crowd. A lot of the crowd comes to increase their collection of racing memorabilia with the traditional Haskell Hat giveaway. Monmouth has been giving hats away since at least 1988.

I collect stuff too! I am very envious of your pinbacks, I love those. I have every program from my time at Del Mar last summer (I interned there, so that means I have every single day, eek!). I also have 12 years of The Blood Horse in my attic (yikes). I am fond of the bobbleheads, too and snagged Secretariat, Zenyatta, Chip Wooley, Ron Turcotte and my ultimate prize: Bob Baffert. I've got so much stuff, ya'll, but I have yet to swipe a saddle towel ;)

I'm a serious collector of horse racing programs. Have almost 900 Hall of Fame horse programs dating back to Parole in 1882, a couple of Man o' War's, 7 Exterminator's including his maiden, War Admiral's maiden, 17 Stymie's etc. I also ahve a couple thousand DRFs from the 1950s and 1960s. If you Brian, or anybody else is interested I'll make you a good deal on Racing Forms.

I have one saddle cloth (which I missed on eBay - the buyer got a great deal, as I contacted them privately and offered over 3x their winning bid!) - I also collect older glasses and coffee mugs. My rule is to stay away from the "popular" races, otherwise I'd be constantly spending. I justify the expense by actually using them, and only buy from eBay - there's a bit of a thrill when you find something new and unique!

@ Mike in SB...have never heard of a Spectacular Bid maiden program. I think it was at Jefferson Downs, and will be a hard one to find. Actually think it may be easier to find a War Admiral maiden (at least of seen 2 of those) than Spectacular Bid's. @rockybudgetboa, the only large collection of ARMs I recall buying was from a very nice lady in Toronto. Bigred51...(Jim Settembre) is more of a dealer than a collector, however, it brings up an interesting thought to who has the best collections. I can really only speak to program or glass collectors. I think the best program collection is probably a family of lawyers in NYC. It was started by a judge who use to send his baliff out to the track everyday to pick up a program. They have 20 of the 22 races Man 'o War ran in. That's a pretty good start. ;)

Agree with you about the Bid, Deadheat. He certainly belongs on the short list of the very greatest. I have to rank him behind Secretariat and Man O'War, though, because unlike them he was never able to win at a distance beyond 1 1/4 miles. Although he ran well and may not have been at his very best, Bid did try twice unsuccessfully at 1 1/2 miles. In addition to winning at 1 1/2 miles, both Secretariat and Man O'War also won at 1 5/8 miles. Plus, both set records in their long distance performances.

Not many horses can run 10f in 1.57, like The Bid either. Or set a stakes, track, American, or World record in every race or near very race like Ruffian or Man o War. Not all horses can carry 130lbs as 2yr old and still win like Man O War. All the immortals have done something that no other horse had done before, or most likely won't be bested for decades to come. However even a very good, potentially great horse can do something that has never been done. Take Street Sense. No other horse won the Juvi then Derby, but I would not put him in the same breath as those mentioned earlier. Curlin is America's Leading earner and went from maiden obscurity to Breeders Cup Classic winner in one year. Top 100, IMO for the last 30 or so years, best of his decade, IMO too, and while greater than SS, I would not put him with Bid or Man O War.
