So sad makes me hate the sport at times. Need to stop racing 2 year olds and stop bullet drills
R.I.P. Secret Compass
Not everyone saw the accident or knew the details.Let's have some compassion toward other posters.
  • Buckpasser · I understand that not everyone saw the accident or knew all the details, since the vets had to get her back and evaluate her condition before details were released, but it then begs the question why post if you don't know all of the information. Everyone on this site was upset at what happened and hoped that Secret Compass could be saved. Once the details came out it was quite clear, she could not be and euthanasia was the kindest option. · 758 days ago
.Rest in peace my young champion.
RIP Girl

  • kay.robinett · I got to watch the breakdowns of Ruffian and Go For Wand (as well as many others) on the TV. Horrific. Thankfully I have never seen one breakdown on the track while I have been there personally. That would probably be even worse. What happened today was sad and a tragedy. They did bring up the filly's death many times in the telecast, even bringing it up to Baffert after his colt won the Juvenile. I think they updated frequently on the jockey because his condition was changing as the afternoon and evening went on, while the filly's sadly was not. I am grateful that they did not replay the breakdown again and again, as they did with Giant Ryan last year. · 758 days ago
  • kay.robinett · they being a different network IIRC in the case of Giant Ryan · 758 days ago
Jenna , It's not lack of compassion or greed ! People are simply wondering what else could have been done.
  • AnneShaw · Loved her, 2 yr. old baby, it hurts real bad · 758 days ago
  • kay.robinett · Jamee, it is a tragedy when any horse breaks down and has to be euthanized. The worst part of the sport. No one ever wants to see it, either in a lucrative grade 1 or in the cheapest claiming race. In this case, nothing could have been done for this poor baby girl. Her injury was so catastrophic that all blood supply was cut off to her foot. When that happens there is literally nothing that can be done to save them. If there is partial blood flow, the vets can TRY. In cases like this, the only thing can anyone can do is to end the suffering. Sadly, doctors and veterinarians cannot save everyone, whether human or animal. As advanced as our medical sciences have become, some things are still beyond us. · 758 days ago

  • travel_vic · There should be MORE acess to euthanasia except in Washington and Oregon...SOme of the ALS patients of Huntington`s suffers need an end to that crap: dignity gone, lost control of their bodies, joint pain, bed sores...WHAT a life! · 758 days ago
  • jenna.heusi · very much agreed TV. we are more humane to animals than to fellow humans. · 758 days ago
Please don't put her down.
  • travel_vic · I had a 23 year old cat who was one of the kindness nicest felines I ever was around...He was in kidney failure and in pain. He had outlived the median age fro his breed by about 45%....That ending was an easy decision that I, being HIS frined, woult expect from him, if the tables were reversed....MANY veterinarian problems have no easy answer but to end things · 758 days ago
  • jenna.heusi · yes, let's try to keep her alive only to let her suffer indefinitely only because humans are selfish. educate yourself about fractures in horses in general and then rejoin the conversation. also please have a little more compassion for a suffering animal with an injury that cannot be fixed. · 758 days ago
Heart is breaking for all connections of Secret Compass, such a painful result for such joy that they must have felt to be at the Breeder's. Peace and love to the horse and all her fans, good healing to Johnny - I have been a fan of Forestry for so long, I am devastated to see one of his g-babies have to go. Luck to you all today, though - hope the rest of the day is injury-free. :/ :(
  • amino998 · Sad part of the game, but without the game there wouldn't be all those good Forestry feelings :) · 758 days ago
Rip beautiful girl. So glad you couldn't see the breakdown on bloodhorse video. I wanted to see the race but was dreading her breakdown after I read what happened first
Didn't wanna see that at all, I hope her and Johnny V are okay.

  • goblin · Exactly, kay, all fractures are not created equal. Every one is evaluated separately. · 758 days ago
  • travel_vic · ANYTHING distal to the knee has really poor vascularity......SOme with us as I never have seen a good result from calcaneal fractures even it repaired right away: nutrient artery is just too small · 758 days ago

  • travel_vic · That is a sever pathology in humans...Tried to re-loate one in the ER and the patient almost drove her fingernails through my palms...Had to take her upstairs to do things under anesthesia and she was under 30 · 758 days ago
