  • Buckpasser · Colin also ended up in Virginia as well, but at a different Farm where he died in 1932. It was a farm owned by Edward Maclean who owned the Washington Post and the Hope Diamond. He also bred Rosemont who was sold with his dam in a dispersal of the farm's bloodstock. Colin first stood stud in England where he was unpopular because of his American bloodlines. He came back to the states and was at Castleton until Keene's death where he stood in Ky at Wycliffe Stud owned by Corrigan and partners. When that farm disbanded he was purchased by McLean to stand at Belray, his farm in Virginia. He was plagued with fertility issues, but still managed to sire Neddie who was the grand sire of Alsab through nice race horse Goods Goods. He is also in Stymie's pedigree on the dam side. · 1009 days ago
  • Buckpasser · The proper spelling is Edward McLean. iPad seems to have a mind of its own today. · 1009 days ago
Ran greatest race ever in defeat after putting Affirmed away and came back to just miss by a nose.

  • travel_vic · QUICK before it degenerates, TRANSFER all video tape to DVD. Tape loses paricles over time and will not play well. · 1012 days ago
  • Peppermint Paddy · I have transferred lots of his stuff, his old super8mm films transferred to dvd. Footage of his visits to Lexington farms. Secretariat, Raise a Native, Caro, many other are on there. but yeah you're right, the Slew vids are next. · 1012 days ago
everyone wish Jenna a Happy Birthday! :D

  • travel_vic · Laz Barerra "he is tougher than a 5 cent steak!" And I agree wholeheartedly the way Laffit just "played" Bid in their meeting. · 1075 days ago
  • EP Taylor · European for me is Nijinsky. I think he could have handled the Brigidier at any trip. But I will say #1 spot goes to the Staying Triple Crown winner of 79 Le Moss. who in 1980 repeated that Feat. Incredible horse with tremendous stamina. · 1075 days ago

One of the greats. Probably the number one stud producing more top champions then any other stud.

  • buckpasser · AmbitiousD, Rafi, Kaitline and anyone else who might be interested. There are two books on ebay that are very cheap and quite good. Before The Bugle by Jennings is a book about the Hancocks and Claiborne $8.00 in a nice edition. Golden Goose by Earl Ruby is about the jockey Roscoe Goose who rode the long shot Donerail to victory in the Derby. Donerail was gelding sired by McGee who also sired the great Exterminator. A very good book about a forgotten old timer for $10. · 1208 days ago
  • airedale2008 · As an admirer of Secretariat's Belmont, Kaitline, you should read Secretariat's Meadow-The Land-The Family-The Legend, written by Penny Chenery's daughter Kate Chenery Tweedy. It tells the story from the Chenery family perspective, and is chock full of pictures from Penny's private collection that you won't see in another book. Kate also wrote Riva Ridge Penny's First Champion about the too often forgotten horse who came close to winning the Triple Crown himself. Penny's brother and sister wanted to sell Meadow Stud and put the money into the stock market. Riva won enough stakes money to change their minds, and the next year the chestnut colt made history. I was lucky to attend Secretariat's birthday celebration and 40th anniversary of his Triple Crown in March at Meadow Farm. These books are now signed by Penny, Ron Turcotte, exercise rider Charlie Davis, Kate, co-author Leeanne Ladin, Riva's exercise rider Wayne Mount and publisher Wayne Dementi. Wayne told me that he only printed 1,000 of the Riva Ridge book. I took a picture of Wayne Mount holding Riva's exercise saddle and beside him Secretariat's exercise saddle being held by the son of Meredith Bailes, who first broke Big Red. A fun day for 1200 racing fans. You would have enjoyed it. · 1198 days ago

  • travel_vic · a colt has to be GOOD, Healthy and LUCKY...Riva, Swale, Silver Charm and others were not Canonero · 1243 days ago
  • Buckpasser · You are correct Airedale because I remember several articles in Sports Illustrated, Thoroughbred Record and DRF that stated perhaps it was getting too easy to win the TC and that it needed changes to toughen the criteria for winning. People also forget that in the '40's there four winners. · 1243 days ago

I can't believe he was trained EIGHT MONTHS in Dressage before he became a racehorse. That's just amazing. It's the way it should be, too. Just imagine the type on control the jockey would have...

  • UnionRagsRules · Let me tell you how SCARY it is to watch an unbalanced horse run barrels. Some run in, drop their front end, and sling their hind end around. Most horses that do this in anything but perfect ground will fall. And many futurity horses scare me. Those poor four year olds, sent out there to go that fast around the barrels... I don't futurity mine. Infact my horses aren't even close to finished until about 8. I made an exception for my Speedy LeBron, though, as he was ready to go full force by 6. But he still isn't seasoned enough at 8. · 1276 days ago
  • travel_vic · I had a long tale today with a former rider who still exercises in the morning and going to quote him "about 99 our of 100 things a rider MIGHT do, are going to, in some way hinder the horse, so how much does the rider have to do with a horse winning? Very little." · 1276 days ago
