What the Nation is saying about Rough Sailing...

Farwell to thee … A.P. Jet (21) Japanese stakes winner was a solid sire in the States. Anjiz (22) Stakes winner in England in U.S. passed away in Argentina. I saw him win the Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland. Black Tie Affair (25) The Horse of the Year of 1991 got better every year for Ernie Poulos. I sa...Read More

  • MarcelloMarocco · Dance Smartly was the one that bothered me the most. Beautiful mare, and Great racer, but she had to be euthanized after a paddock accident. Then there is Izvestia , another Canadian TC winner who was euthanized at 4 after a catastrophic injury during a race. Finally this year the passing of the best Sire since Northern dancer....Sadler's Wells. · 484 days ago ·

1.) Calvin Borel was awfully mad after the Marathon.  It had a lot to do with Javier Castellano making a wreckless move that could have injured a horse or rider.  It had more to do with Borel being on a horse that was moving comfortably and seemed to be a few furlongs away from giving him ...Read More
A stumbling start from the outside post did not bother Team Valor's Pluck as he thundered down the lane to easily take Saturday's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf under Garrett Gomez. Trainer Todd Pletcher and Gomez also teamed up to win yesterday's Juvenile Fillies Turf with More Than Real. Both youngst...Read More
Have they released any info yet on just how serious the injury was? I'm not familiar with too many cases where a horse is injured during a race, but in the few I do know of, generally if it's thought that the injury could be reasonably healed and the horse regain his/her health, an attempt to save them is typically made. Since Rough Sailing hadn't been gelded (that I know of) he still might have proven to be of value as a stud. Whatever the circumstances, though, it's truly sad. Rest in Peace, Rough Sailing!

  • ribot · Probably the fractured shoulder caused the rear end slip while switching leads, so unfortunate but, things like this do happen out of the blue.. Ive ridden in that ambulance and it 's awful. No one runs a horse if they think something like that is possible, "hearts and prayers" · 928 days ago ·

An article about the tragedy posted at CBS says: "The 2-year-old fractured the right humerus, a major support bone in the upper leg, when he slipped and fell going into the first turn. He was taken off the track in a van and examined on the back straight. "It's not a fracture that's repairable," on-call veterinarian Dr. C. Wayne McIlwraith said." I don't know anything about veterinary medicine, so I comment on what he's saying, but to my uninformed ears, it sure sounds like it would be a very difficult area in which to try getting a break to heal. So sad :(

With all the money these horses make for their owners, couldn't they fix Rough Sailing's shoulder. Anyway, I guess all of these wonderful animals are expendable. So sad

RIP Rough Sailing. You do not deserve to be put down for slipping. I know your shoulder is fixable, but some people don't understand that. Someone would have loved to have you in their pasture to look at and love. RIP.

Rough Sailing physically resembles his damsire, Woodman, the Irish Champion Juvenile. He receives turf attributes from his sire Mizzen Mast, a son of Champion Turf Horse Cozzene, as well as Woodman and his second and third damsires (The Minstrel and The Axe). Rough Sailing’s dam is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Wild Zone.
  • humphrey · You know some of the BEST looking horses could not beat a fat man DOWN a hill and others, i.e.Personal Ensign who was not described with any glowing attributes, just functioned well. We had an old claimer who was sway back and long bodied. That combination gave him great acceleration, and for years he had part of the track record at 6 furlongs....It was suggested that Seabiscuit ran even BETTER after his injury as it realigned a portion of his leg to the point he could extend it further. · 938 days ago ·
