Still racing?
I think this horse is vastly improving - he has an awful trip in the Foster and still got up to get fourth, ahead of Alternation, Mission Impazible etc. Wow. Can't wait to see what he does in the future.
On Feb. 4, breezed 4 furlongs in 50.20 (33/41) at Gulfstream Park.

  • Floridaf · He's nominated to the Gulfstream Park Handicap. I am not sure how likely he is to start, however. · 1884 days ago
so, is he out for the rest of the year?
Off the Derby trail with a foot fracture. Could resume training in 2-3 months.
The son of Smarty Jones is back! After missing a week of training, the colt shows no signs of a foot bruise. He looks happy and strong. It looks like the G1 Toyota Blue Grass will be his next race.
  • medlocke · Still considering Rogue Romance as an across the board bet in the Kentucky Derby because he's only been off the board one time on turf or conventional dirt in his career to date, and that was in his first lifetime start. But I would have to see Rogue Romance step up and win on conventional dirt like he has on turf before I'd ever consider backing him to win the Kentucky Derby. · 2234 days ago
Foot bruise may be a blessing in disguise. Louisiana Derby requires either a six-week layoff or two preps in six weeks. Pointed to Arkansas Derby (Daddy's footsteps) or Bluegrass no doubt. Still someone I'll put in my Derby Trifecta.
DRF reports a minor injury...a foot bruise...a setback on the road to Kentucky.
Three-Peat. The Three Muskeeters are back for the Louisiana Derby with the announcement that MMM connections are posting for a Lousiana Derby Risen Star redux with Rogue Romance and Santiva (barring a switch by the latter camp), 1, 3 and 2, respectively in their last match. Too close to call notwithstanding the extra distance.
  • 12 Clip · And the extra cash. When was the last time you saw a Grade 2 race worth one-million big ones that wasn't a Breeders Cup Race? · 2247 days ago
With the Rogue apparently pointed to the Louisiana Derby, the question is: Will Mucho Macho Man post for another bake-off with Rogue Romance and Santiva (the Risen Star could have gone to any of them, particularly if stretched to a mile and 1/8)? MMM's connections appearing to be leaning to another venue.
  • 12 Clip · Perhaps the connections of Mucho Macho Man are mulling the idea of running him in the Florida Derby one week later than the Louisiana Derby. Although the Louisiana Derby is worth one million dollars for the first time in the history of the race, and that's enticing. But the 6 week lay-off leading up to the Derby doesn't excite me that much. And that's why I think the coonections have a tough decision to make. Do we want to go to Gulfstream and get in a speed duel with Soldat. Or should we stay in Louisiana where we had success winning? That is the $64,000 question? If I were the connections I'd run in the LD and take my chances against Santiva, Rogue Romance, and Machen again. I think all those horses who raced in the Risen Star are nice animals, and serious Kentucky Derby winners. I think any one of those 4 horses cou;d win the Louisiana Derby. · 2250 days ago
Rogue had a tough trip for his first race back in 100 days. It seemed like he was keen to go on early but was tightly held by Julien Leparaoux. This might explain why his mouth was bleeding after the race. I've been saying all along this horse is fast and tough and would be better served up cnear the pace, instead held back and wait to make one big run. Perhaps the jockey is not a good fit for this horse on the dirt. I think a jockey like Ramon Dominguez would be a better one for Rogue Romance. Still I like the way Rogue looks. He's got more muscle as a 3 year old, and this race should set him up nicely for his next. i think the G2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawan Park, might be a spot McPeek may want to look into for Rogue's next race.
Risen Star: Early Speed+ P-Horses = Rogue Romance and Mucho Macho Man in the stretch. Santiva and Machen are good on paper but too slow and untest, respectively.

  • footlick · I'm with you on that icyhotboo. Trainers back then knew that racing a horse helped condition them. They started their seasons in allowance race sprints and slowly stretched them out. Thanks also for the tidbit on Successor. Didn't realize that they were the first to use a rabbit on Dr Fager. · 2257 days ago
Not a good trip + where was the early speed? But not a bad tune-up all things considered. Gaining at the end
  • ajump08 · He may like the Oaklawn clay surface a bit more. Some turfy horses prefer the clay based dirt (Oaklawn, Churchill) over to sand based dirt (Fair Grounds,Belmont,Tampa Bay) · 2258 days ago
Final tune-up 1:02 and change (2/12) for 5f appears a perfect tune-up. Lights, camera, action.
Based on his latest work, the Rogue is tuning up perfectly He has the head, heart, legs, running style (gear, brake, accelerator) and pedigree (see Manila) to go all the way
  • bravo2407 · Work was 60 flat for 5 furlongs this morning (2/5) officially but faster unofficially. Stronger, bigger. good-to-go · 2273 days ago
The son of Smarty Jones is back on the track and working out. He's filled out nicely and looks strong. Watch out!
Rogue Romance is a very impressive colt. Definitely my favorite contender.
What a great performance by Rogue Romance, the son Smarty Jones pulled off and outstanding performance, quite hard for a 2yo to do, if you haven't seen the race watch ut and be amazed.
Stylish performance in the Bourbon. Made quick of work of the 12-horse field. This horse is bred with alot of stamina and has a very nice turn of foot. He may even be better on the dirt and if Kenny McPeek thinks so, we may see him in the BC Juvenile race. The son of Smarty Jones out of the mare Lovington. Runnymede breeds fine horses, and from this crop they have two standouts in Rogue Romance G3 winner and also the ultra-impressive looking G1 winner Jaycito.
This horse broke its maiden impressively and was only 2/5ths off the track record
