What the Nation is saying about Rip Van Winkle...

Nineteen up, nineteen down. Zenyatta has done it all. Her quest for a pair of perfect 10s comes in a few weeks at Churchill Downs with the world watching in the Breeders' Cup Classic. But there is an undeniable question standing in her way to 20 consecutive victories -- the competition. Even the mos...Read More
THE brilliant Rip Van Winkle, winner of three Group 1s, including this year's Juddmonte International Stakes at York, has been retired due to a setback, it was announced to the Racing Post on Wednesday night. It’s hard to believe we’re almost there. Monday, Oct. 25, is pre-entries day, and then we can dissect the plethora of Breeders’ Cup races in earnest. You better ingest what follows quickly, because you can bet it’s going to change by the minute, as was the case with our rundown of the Nov. 6 races a...Read More
Rip has been retired...
Hot off the press. On both RacinPost.com's web-site. And ThoroughbredTimes.com's web-site. There will be no second attempt at a Breeders Cup win for Rip Van Winkle. The 4yr.old son of Galileo was retired today to stand stud next his sire at Coolmoore in Ireland in 2011. Aidan O'Brien told RacingPost.com in England that Rip Van Winkle had suffered a minor set beck, and that to bring him to the Breeders Cup this year would be "forcing it." Therefore, Rip Van Winkle is now retired. So Fame and Glory is now "iffy" at best for the B.C. Turf for Ballydoyle. And Rip Van Winkle is now retired. I'm sure O'Brien is likely to send Joshua Tree to the B.C. Turf now. Off of his Patteson Canadian International win. But beyond that now? Who knows?
Of the 14 Breeders' Cup races, the biggest favorite is likely to be in the Mile, where Goldikova goes for her unprecedented third consecutive victory on the Churchill Downs turf. The 5-year-old mare tuned up for her title defense with an impressive half-length victory over soft turf in the Prix de l...Read More

The Breeders' Cup three-peat. It has never happened, and only once been attempted, but if things go as planned, Goldikova, the marvelous French miler, will try to make history this year. Goldikova starts Sunday at Longchamp in the Prix de la Foret, and any kind of decent performance will propel her ...Read More
OK, we’ve made it through September, picking up a few Breeders’ Cup horses along the way, and now it’s time to gear up for the big prep weekends at Belmont, Hollywood Park, and Keeneland, and, of course, at Longchamp. Only then will the BC races be truly defined. This past weekend saw several intere...Read More

Saturday's Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot Racecourse is, arguably, the most important Group 1 mile turf race outside the United States. The QE II is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series, which earns the winner an automatic invitation to compete in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs.Read More
  • mshutty · Did get to see the impressive victory posted by Rip Van Winkle in the Juddmonte. Quite a performance and he looks better than ever. Certainly the one to beat tomorrow. Seems the C team from Europe have been handling the A team from North America pretty well this past Summer. Imagine what their A and B teams will bring come Breeders Cup. Nice recap on the recent history of the QE II. · 1302 days ago ·
  • medlocke · Great race in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot today. Race favorite, and 2009 Q.E.II winner, Rip Van Winkle, was beaten in an extremely tight photo finish by the Godolphin colt Poet's Voice. Poet's Voice came into the race off of a win at Goodwood in the G2 totesport.com Celebration Mile. Rip Van Winkle won the G1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York back in August. Against a stellar field of competition. Defeating 3rd place finisher in the 09' Classic, Twice Over, by a nose. But Rip Van Winkle has since been well beaten by his stablemate, Cape Blanco, in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, and in today's Q.E.II Stakes at Ascot. Cape Blanco is the Ballydoyle 3yr.old who has won the G2 Dante Stakes at York. The G1 Irish Derby at the Curragh. And was 2nd to Harbinger in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. Trainer Aidan O'Brien commented after Rip Van Winkle's loss in the Q.E.II today that "they will have to sit down and evaluate whether or not to send Rip back to America for this year's Breeders Cup." I think it's much more likely that we're going to see his stablemate, Cape Blanco, in this year's Classic instead. The Irish Champion Stakes is a "Breeders Cup Challenge win and your in" race. So Cape Blanco already has the automatic victory to gain entry into the Classic. Cape Blanco destroyed Rip Van Winkle, Twice Over, Sea Lord, Beethoven, and Famous Name in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes. Rip Van Winkle finished a very distant 2nd to his stablemate in that race, with Twice Over a distant 3rd. · 1301 days ago ·
As one of Europe’s premier Mile races, the Queen Elizabeth II (G1) Stakes at Ascot has understandably had a significant bearing on the Breeders’ Cup. Its running on the final weekend of September enables it to be both target and realistic prep for end-of-year international bounty hunters. The last t...Read More
Each year, it seems the Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IT) paints the same bleak picture for the American grass horses. Whether it’s Conduit, who captured the last two BC Turfs, or the 10-1 Red Rocks in 2006, or the 1,2,3,4 Euro blitz in 2005, the Americans have had a tough time defending their home turf. Read More

  • medlocke · Difficult, but not impossible. Goldikova is still on top of her game. But she has lost a step from her 2008 and 2009 Breeders Cup Mile-Turf victories. I think the 2010 B.C. Mile-Turf will prove to be Goldikova at her most vulnerable in any of her three attempts. If Sidney's Candy run's the 8 furlongs of the B.C. Mile anything at all like he ran the 8-1/2 furlongs of the La Jolla Handicap, setting a new Del Mar turf course record for 8-1/2 furlongs in his only lifetime start on turf, I think he has a big chance. He ran those 8-1/2 furlongs like he was in a 6 furlong sprint race. Also, if the Court Vision that showed up and won the 2010 Woodbine Mile run's that well in the B.C.Mile-Turf? He's got a very realistic chance at beating the Euro's as well. I'd say the Euro's have an advantage. But America does have a couple of turf mile contenders in Sidney's Candy and Court Vision that are more than capable of springing the upset. JMO. · 1307 days ago ·
