What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Redwood...

The Canadian International is always a great race to gamble on, but is this year's edition a great 'betting race' as it's being dubbed? Read More

Redwood, second to the popular Rewilding in the 2011 Dubai Sheema Classic (G1), is a possible starter in Sunday’s Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (G1) on Sunday, reported trainer Barry Hills.  The form from the Dubai Sheema Classic has come back strong following Rewilding’s powerful stretch drive to ...Read More

  • medlocke · I thought Godolphin would likely go with Mastery as their #1 horse in the Sheema Classic off of his very impressive G1 Hong Kong Vase win at Sha Tin back in December. That said, Rewilding turned out to be an equally great choice for the race. Definitely the best 3yr.old prospect in their stable during 2010 season. Rewilding ran 3rd behind Workforce in the G1 Epsom Derby back in June, and won the G2 Great Voltigeur Stakes quite impressively back in August at York. Rewilding then went to Doncaster for the G1 St Leger in September as race favorite. But faded to 6th in that race after having difficulty staying the 1-3/4 trip of the St. Leger. But this colt has always been at this best fresh off of a lay-off. I thought this year's Sheema Classic pointed out something I've said more than once since November. That this year's Breeders Cup Turf was the weakest renewal of that race in the history of the event. 2nd place finisher, Champs Pegasus finished 12th of 14 in the Sheema, and the winner, Dangerous Midge, finished stone motherless last. · 1200 days ago ·

I think it's highly unlikely that Prince Khalid Abdullah will send Workforce to Dubai for this year's Sheema Classic. With that thought in mind, I really hope he send's Redwood this year to represent Juddmonte Farms in the race. Spanish Moon has had 2 cracks at winning the race in 2009 and 2010, and hasn't gotten the job done. Redwood is in the best form of any 12+ furlong turf horse in the Juddmonte stable at this particular time, IMO. It's been quite sometime since Redwood had run a bad race. Win's in the Glorious Stakes at Goodwood and the Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine. 2nd place finishes in the Princess of Wales Stakes at Newmarket and the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin. And a 3rd place finish in the Pattison Canadian International Stakes at Woodbine. This colt is really in fine fetal form wise right now. I think Redwood would be a big player in this year's Sheema Classic if Abdullah send's him to Meydan? JMO.

The 2010 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races were a masterful display for horses who have spent some of their careers in Dubai.  Well-backed after opening at 10-1 and being cut into 9-2 by the local punters at Sha Tin, Mastery landed the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase (G1) by 2.5 length...Read More

As far as I'm concerned, Prince Khalid Abdullah really missed the boat by not sending Redwood instead of Workforce to this year's Breeders Cup Turf. Workforce was "iffy" at best from the time he stepped off of the plane in Louisville. The Churchill Downs turf course is just too firm for his liking. He ran badly in the King George at Ascot on firm ground earlier in the season. The ground also didn't suite the French colt, Behkabad either. He's used to more cut in the ground than he got at Churchill Downs, too. Much more accustomed to the softer turf of Longchamp and Chantilly in France. Redwood could've easily beaten Dangerous Midge, IMO, had he been entered. He had really solid form over his last 5 or 6 starts at 1-1/2 on firm, good to firm, and good to soft turf. Finishing 2nd behind Irish St Leger winner, Sans Frontieres in the G2 Princess of Wales Stakes at Newmarket in July. He then won the G3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood. Beating G2 Prix Foy winner, Duncan, among others. He then went to Deauville, France and ran another big 12 furlong effort. Finishing 2nd in the G2 Grand Prix De Deauville. Redwood was then shipped to Woodbine. Where he won the G1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes. Then raced in the G1 Canadian International Stakes at Woodbine. Where he ran a very solid 3rd in a blanket finish. The race won by Ballydoyle's Joshua Tree with Moores Wells running 2nd. Redwood would've definitely been the colt to beat in this year's B.C. Turf. IMO.
This weekend at Woodbine was really the last serious chance to punch a ticket to Louisville for three Breeders’ Cup grass races. As seems to be the custom for this weekend of racing, it was dominated by the Europeans who brought 15 of the 28 horse entered in the three “Win and You’re in” events: The...Read More

Sure, stallions go through good years and bad years with crops of foals, but particularly in terms of producing outstanding turf routers, Sadler’s Wells certainly earned his retirement in 2008, leaving his sons such as Galileo, Montjeu and the red-hot High Chaparral to admirably continue to pump out...Read More

  • medlocke · humphrey, I remember Secretariat's last race in the Patteson Canadian International very well. On the turf at Woodbine, and Kennedy Road, a great Canadian colt, was being played up as the horse that would really test Secretariat on the turf. I also remember Eddie Maple got the mount because Ron Turcotte was serving a suspension at the time. I've heard Eddie Maple remark several times in interviews through the years that getting the mount on Secretariat for the PCI was hell on his nerves. He said he was really worried that he was going to be remembered as the jockey that got Secretariat beaten in his final race. LOL. As it turned out, Secretariat handled Kennedy Road with quite a bit still in hand at the wire. · 1369 days ago ·
