What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

Todd Pletcher's other horse, Rule, the #3 horse in this week's HRN Derby Power Rankings, will be favored in the Florida Derby over Lentenor and 9 others.Read More
  • Rossington · I really like Rule as one of my potential Kentucky Derby horses to use this year. Winner of 4 in a row on conventional dirt, and never off of the board in 7 lifetime starts, all on dirt. Rule is a big, physical horse that likes to run up-front and wear down the competition. His biggest challenge in this race will likely come from the colt from Great Britain, Radiohead. I've watched replays of Radiohead's races in the UK on attheraces.com and RacingUK. He's a quick colt with a very nice turn of foot. I haven't as of yet seen him race over dirt, but he did look quite impressive in the UK on Turf. · 3 hours ago
  • medlocke · I don't think there's any question that Rule should be the favorite for the Florida Derby. With 4 straight wins, and never off of the board in 7 starts, all on dirt, he certainly has the most established credentials of any of the other horses going into the race. But one potential contender, Radiohead, has already established some credentials of his on, allbeit on Turf, in Great Britain. Here are Radiohead's races and their results during his 2009, 2yr.old campaign in Great Britain: 1. 5-13-09 Newmarket- stanjames.com Maiden Stakes: 2nd to High Spice 2. 5-18-09 Bath- Online Betting Forum EBF Novice Stakes(class 5): Won 3. 6-18-09 Ascot- Norfolk Stakes (Group 2): Won 4. 8-21-09 York- Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes (Group 2): 3rd to older horses. Won by 8yr.old Borderless Scott. 5. 9-19-09 Newbury- Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes (Group 1): 4th to undefeated Awzaan. 6. 9-02-09 Newmarket- Shadwell Middle Park Stakes: 2nd to undefeated Awzaan Now in the U.S., He finished a far back 7th in the 09' B.C. Juvenile won by Vale of York. He most recently just defeated Homeboychris in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park. So, IMO, Radiohead may be the one horse in the Florida Derby established enough so that he could really step up and challenge Rule. He's got an impressive turn of foot, and has raced all of the best 2yr.old's now turning 3yrs.old in Great Britain. Plus, as a 2yr.old, raced older horses in the Nunthorpe Stakes. I still give Rule the edge because he's much more accomplished on dirt, but Radiohead's Turf accomplishments leads me to believe he may be a factor in the race. JMO. NOTE: In Radiohead's first race, the initials EBF, for those who don't know, stands for (European Breeders Fund). · 2 hours ago

  • gardenesque1 · Agree. Lookin At Lucky had every reason to go down in flames making dirt debut in needed outing. He overcame a less than ideal trip and showed wht he was voted 2yo champ. · 1 days ago
Robert LaPenta’s 3-year-old Ice Box drilled a ‘bullet’ half-mile in 47 1/5 Saturday morning at Palm Meadows for trainer Nick Zito as he tunes up for his engagement in next Saturday’s $750,000 Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park, bidding to improve on his fifth-place finish last out in the Fasig-Ti...Read More

Saturday might be a good time to kick off a two-prep campaign for the Derby. Last year Mine That Bird made his first start of the year Feb. 28, while the year previous Big Brown kicked things off March 5. Street Sense opened his two-prep slate in 2007 on March 17. Average them together and what do y...Read More
Great dirt debut by Radiohead. He was a real runner over the turf in Europe - distance will be the biggest question.
There are so many top 3-year-olds who still have questions to answer it makes it tough to come up with a list of 12 horses each week that you’re perfectly happy with.   There are always going to be horses you’d love to include who just haven’t done quite enough to warrant supplanting the more a...Read More
He received a lot of respect at the windows at the Breeders' Cup (shown), but even more respect at Gulfstream Park in an allowance event he soundly handled, defeating quality foes in the process. What's next?Read More
What a tremendous field for today’s G2 Davona Dale at Gulfstream, with all eight fillies being viable contenders. While breaking down the race for Derby Prep Alert over at Hello Race Fans and exploring past results, I was intrigued by the impressive later careers a number of winners and place-getter...Read More
Scratched from the Hutcheson, now entered to make his 3yo and dirt debut in Saturday's (Feb. 27) third race at Gulfstream. Will face General Maximus and Homeboykris.
Of the 23 individual betting interests in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, 10 are running this weekend and six ran last weekend. That means the fabric of this year’s Derby picture is going to be greatly altered by Sunday. It also means that a good number of Future Wager tickets will be virtually wor...Read More
Edward P. Evans’ A Little Warm, impressive winner of the six-furlong Spectacular Bid Stakes on Jan. 9; and Paul Pompa, Jr.’s D’Funnybone, winner of the Saratoga Special (G2) and Futurity (G2) at Belmont Park last year, will be the favorites in the Hutcheson Stakes for brother trainers Anthony and R...Read More
It was another brutal Breeders' Cup for New York-based horses. One year after winning just 1 of 14 Breeders' Cup races - Maram in the Juvenile Fillies Turf - the New York-based contingent drew a blank in last week's Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita. Tapitsfly, this year's Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, d...Read More
If there is one thing you can always count on in the Breeders' Cup it's that it will have it's share of longshot winners and mid-price overlays who get lost in the handicapping frenzy that is so much a part of the event.Read More
The presence of the most accomplished United States-based colts thus far and a strong contingent from Europe should spell value for those who wager on the Nov. 7 Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park.Read More
  • Rossington · Being undefeated and winning easily over the synthetics, Looking At Lucky is certainly the horse to beat in the B.C. Juvenile. D'Funnybone is a horse with a lot of natural speed and could certainly be the one to press him. But D'Funnybone has been primarily a conventional dirt runner, which, if he stay's healthy may serve him well in May at Churchill Downs, but it's unclear how he will rate over the pro-ride surface at Santa Anita. The distance of the race may also be a concern for D'Funnybone as well. · 137 days ago

  • Rossington · I think Lookin at Lucky and D'Funnybone will be the two to beat in the B.C. Juvenile. In the B.C. Juvenile Turf, Interactif, imo, is the best 2yr.old in training in the U.S. right now, dirt or turf. I wouldn't be surprised to see his connection's after the Breeders Cup races try him on dirt sometime early in 2010. If he takes to the dirt he could be a real player in next year's Triple Crown Series. His toughest competition in the Juvenile Turf, on paper anyway, looks to be the European horse Viscount Nelson as they're both already proven winner's with Interactif being 4-3-0-0 and Viscount Nelson being 4-2-1-1. This race should prove to be an interesting match up between these two juvenile stars. But I'd have to give a slight edge to Interactif. · 140 days ago
The Breeders's Cup World Championships success last year of five European-trained horses at Santa Anita Park really made everybody sit up and take notice. There were a record 31 European-trained raiders in 2008 and the number is set to be matched or even surpassed this year.Read More
