What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

So, the “Race for the Ages” is off, and Jess Jackson says they now regret rushing Rachel Alexandra to make the New Orleans Ladies. When a horse doesn’t work for five months, it’s usually more than the weather that is to blame. It was obvious watching Rachel on Saturday that this was not the same fil...Read More

  • Brittney92 · I think that she needs more work outs than she has. On that day that was not her A game next time she run Calvin with have her on her A game i think just for nw she should just have a few more work outs than she will be ready to race and if she wats she can run agenst Zenyatta · 3 hours ago
The day after Zenyatta won for the 15th straight time, Santa Anita still couldn't get enough of her. Ron Charles, who runs the joint when Frank Stronach isn't around, played the part of Janus. Looking backward, he was thankful that Zenyatta had single-handedly accounted for that rare day, a big crow...Read More
After a hectic weekend of horse racing, Monday brought plenty of commentary. The disappointment regarding Rachel Alexandra dropping out of the Apple Blossom was a hot topic of discussion on the web. It's definitely disappointing that the Apple Blossom is off, but hopefully it will work...Read More

  • amfuller · I just wonder, if Zardana hadn't been in the NOL would RA still be going to the AB. Unforgotten the thrid place finisher was 11 1/2 lenghts back. RA would once again be "praised" for her overwhleming victory. · 1 days ago
  • ruby · You have to think that Jackson and Asmussen are relieved in a way. Instead of losing the Apple Blossom in front of the entire world and 'proving' that Zenyatta is the superior horse, they lost off a layoff and can always explain that "it wasn't Rachel". To boot, they get a "get out of Apple Blossom free" card... and now can set the race schedule to Jackson/Asmussen's liking. · 1 days ago
JESS JACKSON ON DECISION TO NOT RUN RACHEL ALEXANDRAIN APPLE BLOSSOM  Jess Jackson: “We tried and we really wanted to go (to the Apple Blossom). It’s unfortunate but the timing just wasn’t right. For the health of the horse. It’s obvious she’s not in top shape. The race...Read More
Zenyatta remained undefeated while taking her fifteenth consecutive victory in the Santa Margarita Stakes today at Santa Anita Park. • Medlocke · With this mare it's not rocket science. Simply put, it's "NATURE." Zenyatta, given how big and physically strong she is makes it impossible for other fillies, colt's too, for that matter, to compensate for that devastating closing drive once she uncorks it. She really is just "TOO MUCH MARE" for Rachel Alexandra to hold off in the stretch once she unleashes that late run. Really, it's just hard to hold back or outrun a "runaway locomotive." As for Rachel Alexandra being pulled out of the 2010 Apple Blossom, that comes as no surprise to me. Jess Jackson, for weeks now, has been trying to "backpedal" on that decision. Every since he asked for the extra week to train, and received it, he's been trying to "save face." That's a week he never really thought that he would get. That's why he asked. Now, it's back to the "Oh, she's only about 85% excuse", which most people will buy, given her lost to Zardana yesterday. But the bottom line here is this. Anyone who's involved with racing, Jess Jackson included, knows that Zenyatta is the better of those two mares. Period. You've now got about as much chance of seeing Rachel Alexandra at Oaklawn in April, as there is of a blizzard hitting the Bahamas. The Rachel Alexandra camp want's no part of Zenyatta. They're just trying to "save face." "LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!!" · 2 days ago
  • gardenesque1 · Obviously disappointed that Rachel is not going in the Apple Blossom, but better that she passes because she is clearly not up to the task at this stage. As for Zenyatta, the phrase Freak of Nature comes to mind. · 2 days ago

  • amfuller · I don't think we will see RA at the AB. Even an 85% RA should have been what she was up against yesterday based on how she ran in 09. I think the best campaign won HOY in 09 not the best horse and now RA is paying for it. I am a Zenyatta fan, I just think what RA accomplished last year was great but she may never be the same horse again. I want RA and Z to match up when they feel RA is 100%. With Z yesterday, she go into traffic had to duck to the inside and still won going away and Mike never had to use the whip. Go Zenyatta! · 2 days ago
  • Arrrgy · If RA bounces back and can put in a 1 mi. work in 1:39 in two weeks, come back with a good 5F work, why not run in the AB? · 2 days ago
More than six months have passed since Calvin Borel last got that feeling -- whatever that feeling is a human being gets from sitting on the back of Rachel Alexandra during a horse race. • kmb · Absolutely agree with Arrrgy. Steve A. has been saying RA wasn't fit, but JJ made the final call. JJ almost killed RA last year, and he expects her to bounce back without proper training after what she was put through with the grueling campaign she successfully handled as a 3yr old!!! Poor Rachel.. · 2 days ago
To stand in the box seats at Santa Anita and hear a crowd of approximately 20,000 roar when Zenyatta rolled past Dance to My Tune in the last furlong of Saturday's Grade 1 Santa Margarita Handicap was an affirmation of the grip the 6-year-old mare has on the Southern California racing scene...Read More

  • amfuller · Ok I feel a little better about the weight, I looked back at the Vanity and with the exception of Life is Sweet, which was carring 122, the other entries were btw 13-18 lbs lighter. Things can be different on any given day but this makes me feel somewhat better about the wieghts for today. · 3 days ago
  • grey32 · First I'm glad Zen's lousy connections finally realize what a terrific horse she is and now are going to let her prove it. Instead of trying to cheat their way in. Second there's way to much made of the weight, remember Zen is a very big girl and she most likely out weighs her rivals by 100-200 pounds or more. She's up to the task. Maybe this year she will run as she should have last year(no fault of hers) and HOY will be hers. RA was hands down HOY 2009, doesn't mean she was the better horse but; she sure had a better campaign. · 3 days ago
