Buckpasser · Eddie Neloy trained all of the Odgen Phipps horses, the famous black and red silks. Most of his Phipps horses were sired by Bold Ruler, Buckpasser was an exception. He trained Gun Bow for the Gedneys not for the Phipps family. · 300 days ago ·

buckpasser · Laz. Broadway was a nice producer for the Phipps. She also produced Great White Way who was a decent horse for the Phipps. She traced back to The bloodstock that The Phipps family bought from E. R. Bradley's dispersal of Idle Hour Stock Farm after his death. I don't think racing fans are aware how much our horses today are indebted to his breeding decisions as so many of our horses Trace back to Blue Larkspur and his great sire Black Toney. · 300 days ago ·

LAZMANNICK · Buckpasser, Great info on your part. One of my old time favorites (no I'm not that old and I was a youngster back in the days of Puss n Boots) was Peter Pan the sire of Black Tony. I’ve read whatever I could find about him. He was a great sire who won stakes from 5.5F to 12F (including the Belmont which was then 11F). Blue Larkspur also won stakes from 5F to 12F and also won the Belmont. What diversity these two great sires displayed when on the track. · 300 days ago ·

buckpasser · Laz. Thanks. I was a bit older than you in the days of Puss N Boots. Peter Pan was a great horse. He traced back to the Commando and Domino line. I am sure you are aware, but others may not be that Commando sired I believe only four crops about 25 horses at the most and yet has had an enormous influence on the breed. Commando, of ourse, sired unbeaten Colin, but obviously one of his best sons was Peter Pan. Ultimus was also a large factor in racing pedigrees as well. · 300 days ago ·

buckpasser · As a small footnote since we are discussing the Phipps family and E.r. Bradley . It was Bradley who popularized War Admiral as an American sire of note. Interestingly enough when War Admiral retired, he was not sought out until Bradley sent his mares to him. Most breeders at the time when enamoured of foreign bloodlines and ignored our American lines. Without Bradley's decisions, War Admiral may never have been the great Broodmare sire that he became. · 300 days ago ·

buckpasser · Laz. I am sure you know about this site, but in case you don't there is an unofficial horse racing hall of fame that has quite a bit of info about Peter Pan and others. Years ago I bought a book at the Hall of Fame in Saratoga called The Great Ones. It had bios and pictures of all the inductees up until that time, 1970.
