What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Pyro...

Eight Belles will be one of those horses that will always be remembered. She will remembered for her huge heart, her great performance in the Derby, her beautiful stature, and, most of all, for all the safety and improvements that she brought her sport since her passing. This is the story of the leg...Read More

  • 12thCrown · I think FG spacing the race as is hurts their chances for top contenders. Very few will wheel back for another race like Nehro did last year. But it's shocking they don't draw better candidates with the $1 million purse! I love visiting that track... can't believe Asmussen is heading west this winter. · 36 days ago ·

The graded stakes committee fights a double-edged sword when they release their updates each year. Blame, who won the Clark Handicap one week ago, is now a grade two winner. His victory in the race and those who competed against him (along with those who ran in years past) were catalysts to making t...Read More

Kodiak Kowboy beat Bribon down the stretch to win the Cigar Mile. Said Vinery Stables president Tom Ludt, "That’s three Grade 1’s this year. We couldn’t be happier. He was a little closer to the pace than normal, but he was just sitting there so comfortably. This horse has been so good for us. Now, ...Read More

Vineyard Haven quickly became one of the top sprinters this summer/fall with wins in the King's Bishop and DeFrancis Dash. During that time, Pyro found his niche in one-turn races in winning the Forego at Saratoga. The two will square-off on Saturday in the Cigar Mile, the final grade one of the yea...Read More
When Dancing in Silks upset the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Santa Anita, it left the Eclipse Award in the sprint division open for debate. Kodiak Kowboy, who rarely gets mentioned in the conversation, could further the confusion with a victory in Saturday's Grade 1, $300,000 Hill 'n' Dale Cigar Mile at ...Read More
It was another brutal Breeders' Cup for New York-based horses. One year after winning just 1 of 14 Breeders' Cup races - Maram in the Juvenile Fillies Turf - the New York-based contingent drew a blank in last week's Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita. Tapitsfly, this year's Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, d...Read More

The complexion of the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile changed dramatically since pre-entries were announced Oct. 28, with six horses that originally made it into the body of the race opting for other races or electing not to come. The most significant offshoot of those defections is that Midshipma...Read More
Although Matercraftsman is probably going to be the "muscle" in the race, as I think he's as good as any other horse coming to the Breeders Cup races, I do like Pyro, especially if the right Pyro show's up, to get up in the money for the B.C. Dirt Mile.

  • Rossington · Both of O'Brien's horses, Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman are for real. I've watched a lot of replays of races that they've either won or gave Sea The Stars all he wanted. Personally, although O'Brien doesn't seem to think so, I feel that Mastercraftsman is a bit more talented even then Rip Van Winkle. I plan to bet Mastercraftsman whether he's in the Dirt Mile or the Classic. I do, however, feel that Rip Van Winkle will be right there with the front runner's come Classic's end. If she sticks with the Classic, it would for me be difficult not to bet Zenyatta to at least hit the board. She handles the synthetics and most particularly Santa Anita race course as well as any horse in racing does. Since it seems that most good turf horses do well on the pro-ride surface, I also wouldn't rule Gio Ponti out of this race either. Beyond that, it's difficult to say. Einstein has done well here in the past having won the S.A. Handicap earlier in the year. Richard's Kid, although a longshot, has done exceedingly well on synthetics having won the Pacific Classic and finishing third in the Goodwood. Summer Bird and Quality Road are the question mark's to me in the race. Having raced exclusively on conventional dirt, no one really knows how they will fire on synthetics. If he does, I feel Quality Road may be sitting on a big race having been bogged down on off tracks his last two races. Colonel John is also proven on synthetics, although I think this particular group of horses may be a little better competition than he used to facing. All and all, this is a tough race to handicap with a lot of "what if" factors to consider. I anxiously await. · 828 days ago ·
