  • icyhotboo · I can't speak for TV but I'm making the assumption he meant that they both ran excellent that day but Prove out was the better horse. Consider that previous to Secretariat setting the track record at Belmont it was 2:26.3 Set by Gallant Man on a fast track. This race was run on a sloppy track and Prove out's time was 2:25.4 (second fastest ever run at that track at that distance) Secretariat equalled Gallant Man's time of 2:26.3 so there was nothing wrong with him.Sometimes it can be easy to forget the advantage a good 4yo has over a good 3yo. Allen Jerken's Jr. bought Prove Out privately and worked out his flaws so that he could be the horse he was meant to be. This was no fluke, I was there and Secretariat had 1/2 length lead at the top of the stretch and he just got out kicked. Mr. Jerkens in my mind at least, was one of the best trainers of all time from whom I learned a lot about life as he paid attention to the small details and took nothing for granted. Have a nice day Tampa · 1623 days ago
  • travel_vic · as per usual icy knows what I meant. Of all his loses, the Woodward is the one least attributed to luck and most attributed to meeting a better horse that day. · 1623 days ago
