buckpasser · Maybe Javier Castellano on Hungry Island who finished second in turf race before the Woodford Reserve came back to Shug, who also trained Hungry Island, and told him about the problems on the course and Shug decided that it wouldn't suit POE and he might be injured so they scratched. The Phipps and Janneys are sportsmen and I have don't believe they dodge competition. After all these two are going to meet either here or later. · 15 days ago ·

buckpasser · I don't think they dodged anything. I believe Shug was concerned POE might get hurt. CD turf when it is yielding is not a pretty picture. If the horse had gotten badly hurt, Shug and the owners were never have forgiven themselves. After all I am sure there is a race that still haunts them and they second guess what would happened if they had scratched that day and not accepted all challenges. · 14 days ago ·

buckpasser · No amino. Wise Dan has run and won more times on yielding turf than POE has. I think POE had a victory and a second or third. But I think it would have been a much more demanding race if both POE and Wise Dan were in there competing. Shug, in my opinion, did what was best for his horse. Wise Dan's connections did what they thought were best for him. The other question is if POE hadn't scratched, would Wise Dan have. WD is a very nice horse, but other than an improving Optimizer, there was no real competition for him with POE out. They'll meet clearly when all conditions are optimum. · 14 days ago ·

Floridaf · Swift Warrior was also scratched from the Woodford, timmy. As to the surface, POE has two races over a yielding course. One resulted in a 3rd place finish in an AlwOC, and the second resulted in a win in the Joe Hirsch. Wise Dan has run on and won on all different surfaces including sloppy main tracks. I agree that Shug did what was best of POE and wasn't dodging Wise Dan. POE really doesn't seem to like wet courses. · 14 days ago ·

Also people forget tat Frank Stronach owns part of this horse and who knows what say he has. They wanted a fair, clean race versus him and over that gross, long, wet grass it was just going to be weird. Optimizer, relishing the wet turf as usual did very well and I almost included him, but it is hard for a 14 year old to find betting windows in New York city on the side of the street... I don't remember who placed behind Wise Dan that day, but I remember thinking he was gonna fall-down a few times around the track due to the deep turf. Of course one can blame Rosario, which in light of recent acheivements might not be as well received as it was then. Of course JV did what he set out to do, get the mount on AK. Beating Wise Dan at 1 1/8 in top form is nearly impossible for any horse currently running on turf, anywhere. If he (POE) were to face AK now I believe you would see a different outcome. As for dodging, shug is old school, they race their horses. I would think the horses safety was the primary reason. Future studs that need to increase their stud value, Cali horses trying to prove that they aren't too chicken to race on other than their lovely pool tables. Yes, he won the Joe Hirsch on a yielding course, but he was a fairly hard ridden winner that day despite the soft fractions. Mike in SB · Point of Entry ran 7 times last year and has now run in 5 Grade One races in a row, this is a much more challenging than the majority of top horses racing today. I understand everyones disappointment that he did not facing Wise Dan but I am sure the decision was based only on the track condition. The connections are New York based and I can understand wanting to wait until the race at Belmont. I believe Point of Entry will have a strong summer and fall campaign and expect to see him in the Arlington Million and Breeders Cup. · 10 days ago ·

I agree that Dan would probably win at the mile and POE in longer distances - 9 furlongs would be a perfect test between the two. As far as your first point, both horses have proven themselves at nine furlongs. Point of Entry is coming off a monster race at nine furlongs and has been pointing for this race all along. Both LoPresti and Fink told me that they want to run Wise Dan at longer than a mile again this year, and Wise Dan was pointing for a nine furlong race for his next race regardless of whether it is the Woodford Reserve or not. As for your second point ... As stated clearly in my article, with Successful Dan coming back a winner, the Stephen Foster would be an extremely logical race for his next start. Given that LoPresti and Fink are not going to run Wise Dan against his older brother, the Woodford Reserve is very much in play for him as a next start. It might not happen, but as of today, it is very possible. · 26 days ago ·

Point of Entry, ever since stretching out and maturing, has been a monster! He has strings of G1 wins, and his only loss came in the BC Turf, which I may add was a damn biased surface and he had a less than ideal trip. Besides this race, which was quite the effort, he has not been defeated for an entire year. The distance argument, as you two noted, I strongly disagree with. While nine furlongs is not the best distance for Point of Entry nor Wise Dan, both can handle. Are we seriously forgetting that Point of Entry just won the Gulfstream Turf Handicap against a pretty good horse who came back to win the Dubai World Cup. What was his name? Animal Something? He beat Animal Kingdom, a monster, going that distance, and on top of that he did it without much trouble. Wise Dan, while known as a miler, on several occasions he has stretched out to nine furlongs, and did it succsessfully. I think the distance, which is fair, should add a little something to the mix, and it makes it all the more fun to watch. Call me crazy, stupid and ignorant, but, these two turf horses are amazing. Wise Dan is one of the purest, American, middle distance turf horse I have seen in my existence. Point of Entry is a monster going longer distances, and he can he cut-back! Besides one loss, he hasn't loss in a year! He truly is a monster! Two great jockeys (I'd assume Johnny V vs. Joel Rosario), two great trainers (Shug and Motion) and two great horses (Point of Entry and Wise Dan)....
