medlocke · Sometimes you learn about a horse in defeat than you do with a win. Zenyatta ran an incredible race to be beaten only a nose. After Mike Smith had her parked 20+ lengths off of a field this good. Only Blame, running the race of his life, was able to withstand what she brought to bear. I take nothing away from Blame. He's a great champion in his own right. Racing on a track that he dearly loves. He beat Zenyatta fair and square. But to blow by the rest of that field, and come so close takes nothing away from Zenyatta's legacy. If anything, it just solidifies it further. She's all hear. A champion's champion. All the chants of "poly-Zen" should forever be put to rest, IMO. This mare ran huge to come from so far out of it. There's no question she's one of America's all-time greats. Even Man O' War, Secretariat, Citation, Native Dancer, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Spectacular Bid, or any of the other all-time greats were beaten at least once in their careers by horses they weren't supposed to lose to. In this case, many gave Blame a huge shot at defeating Zenyatta. And she challenged him to the very end. JMO. · 460 days ago ·

In 12 hours I’ve heard she only lost because she got off to a bad start, she was bumped, she got cut off, she had traffic, she got a bad ride. You know what? That’s horseracing. It happens to every horse. Do you think every horse she’s ever beaten in the final strides never ran into any of these obstacles? bob46 · The Spa hit the nail on the head. There cannot be any doubt that Zenyatta is one of the greatest but for her supporters to complain about home court advantage is ridicilous. She had this advantage for 90% of her races. She actually ran her greatest race in a losing effort. This is what happens when you race against the best quality horses. Her races in California were against medicore horses at best and really proved nothing. Its poetic that it took a loss to show what a truely great horse she really is. This was really one of the great efforts in racing history and I for one would say she is one of the best horses (male or female ever). I just wish that the Mosses would have had more faith in her and let her compete in races (east or west coast) that would have been more chalangeing. · 459 days ago ·

I cried, too, Mike, But, I'll never get over the thrill of seeing her in person at 2009's BC Classic, and prancing through the paddock for the crowd. She is the biggest horse I've ever seen in my life, and to see her perform was the highlight of my life, and tops seeing Seattle Slew. She's just gigantic. lewpe · All of Zenyatt's camp did a great job. The public loves Zenyatta and she has done more for horse racing than any other horse outside of John Henry. She has piqued interest in this sport like I have not seen in many, many years. She is more than a thoroughbred, she is a true athlete. While we were all hoping for the win, coming in second in a race run the way this race was run is still great but honestly in our hearts, she won. She has showed her class over and over again. She deserved Horse of the Year last year and if the public were voting, she would get it for sure. Hopefully, those concerned will take into consideration what she has done for the sport as well as her race accomplishments. If the Moss' decide to retire her, then she desrves to retire in a comfortable barn, sprinting occassionally, grazing and being treated like the Queen that she is. · 459 days ago ·

ThaSpa · I’ll be honest, I’ve watched every one of Zenyatta’s races at one point or another, and other than a few races I don’t remember or paid attention to the other horses in the race. Right now this site is being overrun by flash in the pan, Zenyatta-biased horseracing fans that will be gone the day she retires; so having objective discussions at this point with most people is not possible. I’m not saying you fall in that category but you’d have to admit it’s ridiculous right now. My point was that every horse that has ever run has faced trouble during a race at one point or another. Zenyatta’s turn was Saturday. That’s horseracing. There’s a major gamble to trying to deep close into a 12 horse field on dirt. The most obvious potential issue is traffic; secondly, she’s going to get 1000 times dirtier than she will on synthetic, third, you run the risk of falling too far behind against good competition. Turns out she ran into all of these & got burned. But that’s the risk of running that style. She still almost overcame it. But if you go into a race knowing that x y & z could happen if you try to deep close & then x y & z happen, you can’t blame that for your loss. Otherwise it’s a no-lose situation. When she wins, it’s her talent, when she loses, it’s not her fault. Wouldn’t life be great that way??? But that’s exactly what Zen fans are doing & they are cheapening the horse they love by doing it. · 458 days ago ·

My point being that the majority of her races to this point have been against so so competition. If Blame or Quality Road had been running against the horses she had been beating they would have been undeafted also. Although it's probably more like A to Z there are so many things that can go wrong in a horse race, but that's what makes Zenyattas streak so amazing. She faced those possibilities every time and still was 19-0 before Saturday. I don't think people are cheapening her. I just think people are saddened that x y and z prevented her from winning a 2nd BC Classic and ending her career in storybook fashion. Everyone wants that happy ending to a great story. I'm not one of those flash in the pan Z fans, if fact I didn't think she would win last years Classic, but when she did in such dramatic fashion she made me a true believer. I too am saddened we didn't get that storybook ending. It would have been great for the sport we all love. That's all it is, just sadness we didn't get that happy ending. I'll get over it because like you said that's horseracing. Even you have to admit it would have been great for racing if she had won. A great example of this is Quality Road running in the classic , its actually more profitable forhis owner to have run 12th in the classic than blow away the field in the dirt mile because running him there would say to all the world he is not meant for the classic distance which he isn't. MarkMidland · Good start... but Zenyatta will be 6-5. Keep in mind this will be her last race, an historic event with a wave of feel-good emotion and press behind her run. She won this race rather easily last year, plus, she's undefeated on dirt, too. Realistically, there will only be two horses that can beat her, Blame and Quality Road. And QR will be suspect at this pace and distance, so that really leaves her and Blame. I look for Blame to move the lead at the 1/4 pole, and with a heady ride by Gomez, he'll have something left in the tank. From the 2009 Classic horses that returned to race in 2010, Zenyatta has won 5 Gr1's this year, Twice Over won the Gr1 Eclipse, Richard's Kid won the Gr1 Pacific Classic and Gr1 Goodwood, Gio Ponti won the Gr1 Man O'War and Gr1 Shadwell, Girolamo won the Gr1 Vosburgh, Rip Van Winkle won the Gr1 Juddmonte International, and Awesome Gem won the Hollywood Gold Cup. cugel the clever · perimeters and ajmindiola - unlike you too amateur handicappers, i actually use facts to back up my statements about the strengths of the 2009 and 2010 fields. remember, in 2009 Z was running on SYNTHETIC and very few of her competition had a proven record of success on synth. in 2010 Z will be racing on DIRT and her competition has abundant successful experience on dirt. in 2009 leading to the Classic, Z's 11 rivals had a grand total of 18 graded stakes victories, BUT ONLY 2 of these were on synthetic surfaces (1 by Richard's Kid and 1 by Einstein).... her competion's aggregate graded stakes record on synthetics was 11 starts (2 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds). Z is a synthetic track specialist and the majority of her rivals were turf or dirt specialists with little success or liking for synthetics. in 2009 leading to the Classic, her opponents had won a total of 18 graded stakes races, but only 2 of these were on synthetics (1 by Richard's Kid and 1 by Einstein). basically, on her home track she beat a bunch of turf and dirt specialists, some of whom were racing on synthetic for the 1st time. the grand total record of her 11 competitors on graded stakes races on synthetic was 11 races (2 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds). for 2010, i analyzed the 10 probable Classic entries (besides Z) and added Fly Down to make a total of 11 competitors who will challenge Z this year. in total, these 11 horses have won 21 graded stakes races. fully 16 of these victories have been on dirt, which is the same surface as this year's Classic. the grand total record of her 11 competitors on graded stakes races on dirt is 30 races (14 wins, 8 seconds, 4 thirds). bottom line is that last year Z faced a field which was very weak on synthetic surfaces; in fact she had far more graded stakes victories on synthetic than the rest of the field combined. this year, she faces a strong field of proven grade I winners on dirt; who have 14 times more graded stakes victories on dirt than her. after her leisurely walks in the park this year and in last year's Classic when she beat weak fields, she is about to enter a slaughterhouse which is going to chew her up and spit her out like hamburger. she, her connections, and her rabid fans won't know what hit her. me and everyone who actually spent time studying last year's field versus this year's field are going to make a killing betting exotics without Z because all the lemmings are going to drive her odds down to ridiculous levels. they're going to witness history all right - the worst ever finish by a prohibitive favourite in the Classic. · 483 days ago ·

The strength of a race is not just leading up to the big event but also what happens after. That is how races maintain and lose their graded status. For instance, leading up to the 2010 Darley Debutante we had a 10-horse field and none of the entrants reached the winning stakes par. It did not look like a strong field but three of the entrants returned to win gr1 races including Wickedly Perfect (gr1 Alcibiades), Rigoletta (gr1 Oak Leaf), and A Z Warrior (gr1 Frizette). Granted, they were juveniles, but I was not expecting three gr1 winners to exit that race in such a short timeframe. Also, I never mentioned being a Zenyatta lover in my earlier comment. Ten furlongs is the Classic distance in American Racing, and in '09 we had 10f G1 Ky Derby winner Mine That Bird, '08 10f G1 Travers winner Colonel John, '09 10f G1 Travers and G1 JC Gold Cup winner Summer Bird, 10f G1 Champion Stakes winner Twice Over, 10f G1 Pacific Classic winner Richard's Kid, 10f G1 Manhattan and G1 Arlington Million winner Gio Ponti, 10f G1 Santa Anita Handicap winner Einstein, and 10f G2 Hawthorne Gold Cup winner Awesome Gem. I am not sure of the 10f record of the 2010 BC Classic since the field is still taking shape, but we know that Zenyatta won last year's Classic at ten furlongs. Blame and Quality Road do not have any wins at the Classic distance. Lookin At Lucky did win the Preakness at 9.5f. Haynesfield won the JC Gold Cup but that was as the lone speed over his favorite track. He probably won't get loose at Churchill and is an outsider. With a weak 3yo crop and the top older handicap horses suspect at ten furlongs the 2010 BC Classic field does not seem particularly strong. There's not one colt in this Classic field that Zenyatta cannot reach down and grab a gear for to run right by, period. The only time in Zenyatta's career she's been close to being beaten is on a poorly mistimed ride by Mike Smith. Not on the mare's merits. Fortunately, she was doing the thinking for both of them in the 09' Clement L. Hirsch. When she had to run down Anaaba's Creation due to Smith coming far too wide off of the last turn, and leaving any normal horse far too much to do. Defeat doesn't enter into Zenyatta's thought process. All that this mare knows is that she sees other horses in front of her, and she's supposed to run by them before the wire. She's managed to do that 19 straight times. I just don't suddenly see her spitting out the dummy in her 20th race. Quality Road will not stay the distance well enough to win the race. Not with a what's likely to be a very lively pace. Likely set by his own hand. Blame was the biggest worry for me. Because of his like for the surface at Churchill Downs. But he got exposed in the JCGC. That a buck and a quarter was a little beyond him with a lively pace. Like her, or don't like her? You better learn to love Zenyatta. Because she's leaps and bounds America's best thoroughbred. Male or female. And she's more than capable of holding her own with the world's best as well. BUT, the exiting performance must be reasonably close to the subject race in order to make a reasonable comparison. just because a horse exiting the 2009 Classic wins a GI race 6 months later in 2010, bears no relation to the horses ability and fitness in November 2009. exiting races need to be close after the subject race, preferably the next race, in order to be taken seriously. also, i am not saying that the 2009 field were not GI winners - my point is that they were overwhelmingly GI winners on turf and dirt, and were being asked to compete on synthetic. even the best horses are not at the very top of list on all three types of surfaces (synth, dirt, turf). · 483 days ago ·

Z has run only once at 1 1/4 and the other major entries have only run once or twice at the distance. haynesfield, who everyone here is dismissing as not being able to make the 10 furlongs has won at his only start at the distance. lookin at lucky only has one race at 10 furlongs on his resume and finished 6th and was beaten by Super Saver. how many people here think that Super Saver is a better 10 furlong horse than LaL based on the result of one single race? but, that's what everyone here is doing - based on almost nonexistent past performances, everyone is extrapolating that Z is better than everyone else at 10 furlongs. the evidence does not indicate this. it indicates that you have a bunch of horses who have very little experience at 10 furlongs. · 483 days ago ·

cugel the clever · gardenesque - you say that "with an honest pace expected Z should not have any excuses". i have always objected to the term "honest pace". if there are two or more speed horses in the race and they decide to slow it down on the lead and the jockeys on the closers are too dumb to realize it and stay way back, then it isn't a case of a "dishonest" ride by the jocks on the speed horses - it's simply a case of a good ride by them and a bad ride by the jocks on the closers (or a deficiency in the ability of the closers to be close to even a slow pace). if the pace of this year's classic is slow and as a result the speed like haynesfield or QR stay on and win, then it certainly isn't a tainted victory. it simply means that at certain pace scenarios against superior horses, Z is not the superhorse that you think she is. · 483 days ago ·

Taptam and Befair!?!?!?!? One of them was a claimer who did little before or after the Apple Blossom and the other who won a single G3 iin 2009 and is winless in allowance company this year. There is absolutely no way to translate this pace scenario to a race where horse like QR and Haynesfield are up front. But it was an off track that day. That could've played a huge role? Because Haynesfield made sure the going was lively up front. Blame loves the Churchill Downs surface. But can he get 1-1/4? Judging by the JCGC, one would have to say no. But on a dry Churchill Downs surface, things could be very different? I think Lucky will stay the trip, too. Last year Z was clearly the horse to beat because she was on home turf and faced a field with a weak record on synthetic surfaces. I included Z in my exotic bets and won. Last year, if he raced, QR probably would not have beat Z.
