What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

Multiple grade I-winning millionaire and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) second-place finisher Pioneerof the Nile will stand for $20,000 when he enters stud at Dr. Tom Simon's Vinery near Lexington in 2010.Read More
Pioneerof the Nile, one of only two males from his crop to win multiple Grade 1 races around two turns, will stand the 2010 breeding season at Dr. Tom Simon’s Vinery in Lexington as property of a syndicate. The three-year-old Empire Maker colt won the CashCall Futurity (G1) to close out his two-year...Read More
Zayat Stables’ Pioneerof the Nile, winner of four consecutive graded stakes and second in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), has been retired due to a soft tissue injury to his left front leg.Read More
  • GBeret · To Zayat Stables,Bob Baffert, and owners of Pioneer of the Nile, very sorry to hear of this tragic loss for the sport. Especially right now when we seem, due to injury, to be struggling to find a standout star colt for 3 yr. olds. Pioneer of the Nile really was at the top of that list and his game, throughout the preakness. If he's anything like his daddy,EM, I bet he'll end up being a great sire. Again, heart felt sympathies for those involved with this great horse. · 251 days ago
  • mshutty · My sympathy also goes out to those that care of the horse and Bob Baffert. I'll let Zayat continue to deal with the consequences of his actions. As for Pioneer of the Nile, any time you lose a strong 3 year old from the races, it hurts the sport. However, like all the CA three olds this year, he was definitely a cut or two below the best 3 year-olds and very much over rated. Let's hope his off spring bring some good ones to the races in the years ahead. · 251 days ago
Retired today... bummer for the West Coast, who is left out there?
While checking out some of John Daly’s funky golf pants the other day, I started thinking about the Skins Game, a made-for-TV golf event, usually held around Thanksgiving which would bring together that year’s hottest names in golf.Read More
Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird had an easy work on June 29th. The gelded son of Birdstone breezed four panels in :51 under regular rider Calvin Borel. The Grade 2 West Virginia Derby on August 1st in up next, and he may get a rematch later this summer with Preakness winner Rach...Read More
All the obvious thoughts on this year’s bizarre, but memorable Triple Crown have been discussed regarding the major players. But there were unsung heroes as well who did not wind up in the winner’s circle, yet contributed to the memories.Read More
With the three-year-old spring season in the books, let’s look ahead to the 2nd half of the year. Other than Rachel, the 3yo division lacked quality pace players in the Triple Crown series. I am looking for late developing sorts and quality early/pressing types to step up in the coming mon...Read More
Mine That Bird, the 2-1 morning line favorite for Saturday's Belmont Stakes, and superstar filly Rachel Alexandra, whose future plans are still uncertain, have been contacted several times by Monmouth Park officials about the possibility of racing in the Aug. 2 Haskell. The responses from both camp...Read More
How much did the addition of the filly Rachel Alexandra mean to the dynamics of the May 16 Preakness Stakes (gr. I)? According to the patrons at Pimlico Race Course the day before the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, it meant everything.n the advance wagering, on-track only, Rachel Alexandra was th...Read More
As of about 6:45 a.m. EDT, every horse was on the grounds at Pimlico Race Course for the May 16 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), the middle jewel of the Triple Crown. The 2009 Preakness is the most intriguing in recent memory, with the top four finishers from the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Bran...Read More
It has long been the tradition for starters in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) to saddle on the turf course at Pimlico Race Course, but more than half of this year's field -- including morning-line favorite Rachel Alexandra and Pioneerof the Nile -- will be saddled indoors, Maryland Jockey Club paddock...Read More
There are two chances of seeing a bid for the Triple Crown this year: slim and none. No one I know picked Mine That Bird to win the Kentucky Derby, and only a couple of redboarders after the race insist they liked him.I'm probably in the minority in thinking Rachel Alexandra will be in for a tough g...Read More
It does not take a doctorate in the art of calculating speed figures to determine that Rachel Alexandra is a gifted and fast filly. Yet in Saturday’s Blackberry Preakness Stakes (G1), the question that begs an answer is whether she’s too fast or she ran too fast. There’s a huge difference in the two...Read More
The pace dynamic in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes is interesting. Big Drama has speed from the rail but is taking the blinkers off, presumably to relax him a bit more early. Rachel Alexandra has speed if needed, and with the outside post, she’ll have to use some of it. Read More
Haskin: Rachel Alexandra made a grand appearance... At first she seemed antsy, bullying her way out on several occasions, but settled down nicely after being moved to another stall.Read More
The week leading up to the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), Ahmed Zayat, owner of Pioneerof the Nile, was hit in the head by bird droppings. The owner saw it as a positive and believed his colt had a good chance in the Derby; little did he know what was to come.Read More
Today at 5:00pm ET, post positions (and jockeys) will be determined for the second leg of the Triple Crown. And once Rachel Alexandra is in the field, the exclusion controversies go away, and it's time to dive into the many story lines.Read More

  • Duvalier · Lucky #13 for Rachel Alexandra. Borel should be able to keep her in the clear from out there...question will be how much ground will she lose. · 309 days ago
  • invasor · Other than Big Drama, Rachel has no one else to clear. With the long run to the first turn, the 13 hole should pose no problem. · 308 days ago
While the Preakness draw won't take place until tomorrow, we have a reasonably good idea of the field at this point. Rachel Alexandra should be in (after Sunday's brush fire of idiocy) andRead More
...don’t go to the funeral - a racing expression admonishing a bettor who missed a big price on a horse to avoid betting that horse the next time he runs. The implication is that the horse will lose at much lower odds in his next start (ex. Mine That Bird).Read More

  • mshutty · Definitely won't beat half the field...Not as bad a thought in prepping for the Derby, but not that much better either. Certainly won't get a free ride on the rail this time... "Pioneer" will be another bet against. Was way too tired in the Derby stretch run...doesn't look like a horse moving forward. · 310 days ago
  • arazi · Musket Man ran a huge race in the Derby and I expect him to do so again in Baltimore. Had a much tougher trip than Papa or Pioneer... just have to hope the filly doesn't freak... What about the bird? No worries, mate... · 310 days ago
