Everybody in the racing industry throughout the world looks at Woodbine as THE place.” Like many people in racing, Attfield doesn’t understand the motivation behind the Province’s plan to get slots out of the tracks. “The whole thing is ridiculous,” he said. “The partnership between the slots and the thoroughbreds has been so successful and we’ve contributed so much money to the private sector and the government coffers with really no cost to the government. It doesn’t make any sense at all.” And what about tradition? The Queen’s Plate, and horse racing in general, has such a rich history and has meant so much to so many people for so many years. buckpasser · Politicians want the money because they don't want to make spending cuts or raise taxes. What's coming in are destination casinos which are from the States. Politicians here and elsewhere have denigrated horse owners as the one percent and do not want to see that many people racing and in the supporting are average people trying to make a living in a business they love. NY better get prepared because Cuomo is going to do the same thing. He has already signaled that changes are afoot. I really think that the US horse industry, both harness and all breed racing interests have got to get together and fight or we will be finished as an industry. · 356 days ago ·

What people here don't realize is that American industries from Vegas are looking to put in destination casinos and the govt wants the money without having to split it with the racing interests. The Ontario govt is more than willing to put over 60,000 people out of work to do this. If anyone in the US thinks this will not have a chilling effect on the industry here they are living in lala land. This is going to be the fate of NY racing.
