Personal Ensign or Alysheba going 10f on dirt? 9f?

  • Exterminator · I'd say 10f Alysheba, 9f Personal Ensign. Towards the end of his 4yo season Alysheba was unbeatable, he set two consecutive track records for 10f, running the Meadowlands Cup in 1:58 4/5. Personal Ensign was always unbeatable, but I don't think she could beat Alysheba when he was running like that. I think she could beat him at 9f, but not by very much. Neither one appeared to like the mud at Churchill on Breeders' Cup day. · 1043 days ago
Personal Ensign or Genuine Risk?
  • Exterminator · I like Personal Ensign just a bit more. · 1069 days ago
  • airedale2008 · Genuine Risk had by far the best run in the three classics by a filly. When the two records are looked at side by side, Personal Ensign has the eight G1's and the historic Distaff win to retire undefeated at 13 straight. She beat the speedy Gulch in the Whitney. Genuine Risk has the Derby victory, six G1's, with 10 wins out of 15 starts. Personal Ensign won a G1 right after her maiden. She fractured her left hind pastern, had surgery and ran the last 11 races with five surgical screws in her leg. It took Genuine Risk six more races after her maiden to attempt a G1, her win in the Wood. It's too bad that her colt with Secretariat was stillborn, as he would have been the first offspring from two Derby winners. Personal Ensign foaled multiple G1 winners, including My Flag. I give the nod to Personal Ensign. · 1066 days ago
This past week marked the three year anniversary of the passing of Personal Ensign. Outstanding on and off the track, the undefeated 1988 Champion Female Older Horse produced eight winners and three G1 champions. Personal Ensign was 1996 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year, a distinction she earned for her dam, Grecian Banner, in 1988.

  • Buckpasser · AD. I reread Jennifer Churchill's commentary on Buckpasser in her book Great Sires of North America. She says that the inbreeding To Man O War through War Admiral reinforces the proven nick with Teddy. Also Numbered Account descends from La Troienne on both sides. From Businesslike to Busanda and from Baby league to Striking and NA's dam Intriguing by Swaps. · 1470 days ago
Personal Ensign???? What because she won 13 easy races. WHAT about Winning Colors who won the Santa Anita and Kentucky Derbies, ran 3rd in in the Preakness and ran in the mile and a half Belmont Stakes. SHE gets absolutely no respect at all. The lightly-raced, coddled Personal Ensign got her by a whisker at the wire and, as far as I'm concerned...that is no victory...it's pretty much a dead heat. Give me a break with this mare. This frigging mare gets put ahead of her after only one race????????...how is that? Winning Colors had a gruelling 3 year old campaign...that everyone seems to have forgotten about, but I'd like to have Personal Ensign do what WC did. while Personal Ensign was running in easy races and beat what males...Kings Swan? She should have run against Risen Star...then we'd see how good she was. If she had raced Winning Colors when Winning Colors was at her best earlier in the year...she would have been left at the gate, and if she was so great...why didn't she run in the BC Classic? Personal Ensign is the biggest farce I ever saw. She ran against a tired, worn-out, way past her peak form Winning Colors. I am SO SICK of Winning Colors be brushed aside because of this farce of a mare. This sport makes me sick more and more. It's the only sport I know of that brushes its REAL Champions to the side, so it can make room for the manufactured ones. Sickening.

  • travel_vic · Here here, that filly with surgical screws holding together her hind leg, did almost the impossible in closing on the outside. Still have that old videotape. The out of breath Romero stated "I can't stand no more luck," when the outrider stuck the microphone up to him. Good guy Romero and it is ashamed what happened to him. · 1522 days ago
  • travel_vic · Still, that was a very gutsy performance from the then washed up Winning Colors on the lead on that sloppy course at CD. · 1522 days ago
One of the classiest horses I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.

Personal Ensign was the rare filly who did so well in her maiden that the next race Shug McGauhey entered her in was a G1. She had an exceptional record on the track and as a broodmare. Daughter My Flag was her best runner, winning the 1995 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies in almost the same fashion as her mother’s historic 1988 run in the BC Distaff. My Flag produced Storm Flag Flying, who won the 2002 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies. Three generations of Breeders Cup winning fillies - all managed by the same trainer. That’s quite a testimony for Mr. McGauhey and the undefeated genes of Personal Ensign.

  • footlick · Laz-Allez France is my all-time favorite European horse and I have huge respect for her, but I think Zarkava was just as talented. I could never say Zarkava was better, as I am not sure there was better than Allez France, but Zarkava would have proven formidable, IMHO. · 1715 days ago

This incredible filly is at #7? Unbeatable, winning multiple G1 races including the Breeder's Cup Lady's Classic. She beat Winning Colors- the last filly to the Kentucky Derby- twice. Ridiculous how Zenyatta and Rachel are in front of her.

  • andiggs · Yes Zenyatta would've beaten her on poly but Personal Ensign would've smoked Zenyatta on dirt. · 1794 days ago
  • TampaBayDowns Fan · Haha!! Zenyatta not beating her on poly...funny! I can see how Zen is above PE, but not rachel. · 1794 days ago
Personal Ensign is #28 on the fillies and mares rankings. This fantastic mare is the only thoroughbred we have ever seen to retire undefeated--since Colin in 1908. There can be no more courageous and gutsy performance than when Personal Ensign ran down Winning Colors in the 1988 Breeders Cup Distaff to win by a nose and retire at 13 straight. All this from a mare who fractured a hind leg as a two year old and continued racing with five screws in her leg. Watch the You Tube coverage of her last race and then vote on her accordingly. Great stuff!

  • travel_vic · Danzig was never beaten either · 1952 days ago
  • airedale2008 · travel_vic: Yes, you are right about these 6 as they were never beaten. What I should have said is that Personal Ensign is the only horse here in the states who ran major races to have a planned undefeated retirement. Ruffian and Landaluce were swift as the wind. I wish both had continued racing to show us more of their greatness. Raise A Native developed a bowed tendon after four races and had to be retired. Lammtarra raced four times in Great Britain. Rare Brick had eight races of which four were stakes wins. Danzig won three before he was retired due to bad knees. Personal Ensign won two G2's and eight G1's. It seems that my post of yesterday discussing her exploits has bumped her from 28th all the way to 14th. Well deserved. · 1952 days ago
Personal Ensign completed her undefeated career with an amazing race against Winning Colors.
One of the top 10 mares of all time, and she is #271 here? It's nice to be educated before you vote, so why not look her up online and see how great she was?
  • arazi · She was a lot higher a few weeks ago. For some inexplicable reason, some people must be voting her down. Or voting the other horses up. · 2209 days ago
Sooooooo ridiculous that she is #199.
Isn't it unreal that this great mare is #184 and that every time I log on she keeps plummeting in the rankings?
  • zatt · It makes no sense at all. · 2231 days ago
  • footlick · I don't look anymore because most of these rankings make no sense. So many vindictive people voting not with factual analysis but with their feelings. I have my fvorite horses, but I also hope I know where they rank in the top 250 all time.. · 2231 days ago
