What the Nation is saying about Perfect Drift...

Some of his greatest performances came over the main track at Churchill Downs, and Perfect Drift seemed right at home when he returned to the surface to launch a new career as a lead pony in Thursday’s first race. The 14-year-old gelding accompanied Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Gold Megillah to the post under the guidance of Monie Goetz and the post-time favorite went on to win the race. The career highlights of Stonecrest Farm’s son of Dynaformer, an earner of $4.7 million during his racing days, occurred beneath the Twin Spires when he won the 2003 Stephen Foster Handicap (GI) under Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day, handing eventual Horse of the Year Mineshaft one of two losses during his nine-race championship season, and finished third to War Emblem in the 2002 Kentucky Derby. He narrowly missed another Foster victory when he was nailed at the finish by 91-1 shot Seek Gold in its 2006 running and competed in five renewals of the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, with a third-place run behind Saint Liam in 2005 being his best performance in that race. Perfect Drift retired with a record of 50-11-14-7 in eight racing seasons. He took up duties as the Thoroughbred-in-residence at the Kentucky Derby Museum after his retirement in 2009, but ended that run late last year.

Everyone remembers Animal Kingdom’s rise to fame last spring when he parlayed an impressive win in Turfway Park’s Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes with a glorious run for the roses on the first Saturday in May, but he was not the only superstar to make Turfway’s premier Kentucky Derby prep their very own...Read More

  • bellesforever1 · LOVED Hard Spun..was my guy then and now..all heart all the time.To Vic..HS ran his heart out in The Classic and the Derby and in any other year would have had a great chance to win them both so saying he couldn't run past 9 panels isn't really fair because he did.He was at his best under that but he has nothing to hang his head about. He always showed up and ran his race and ducked no one.Thank you Brian for the walk down memory lane.Hard Sun Baby!! · 757 days ago ·

  • ILuvTurfRacing · Before I say what I'm about to say, I'd like it noted for the record that I'm a huge fan of Game on Dude, and admire this horse a ton!! That said, I'm not sure the word "Great" actually applies to Game on Dude? I think he probably has as much heart and pure desire to win as any gelding racing in America, or any horse period for that matter. But 6-wins, 4-places, and 1-show in 15 lifetime starts is a long way from being labeled "Great" in my view. TJMO. · 802 days ago ·

  • xmango93x · Could be the best since Lava Man, but I am so biased toward Better Talk Now that I'm probably ineligible. I don't think I'll ever love a racehorse as much as I love that old gelding. Of course, that's because he was "THE horse" for me - the one who got me into racing when the most beautiful black horse I'd ever seen won the 2004 Breeders' Cup. This sport needs more great geldings that stick around and build fan bases. I don't think he was ever as popular as a horse like Lava Man, but to me Brass Hat was another one of those geldings that just stole my heart. The old, classy type that doesn't always win but always gives an honest account of himself. Evening Attire also comes to mind. Right now, I'll say Game on Dude is the best since Lava Man, but it'll take a lot to out-do that. Well Armed was a terrific horse on his day, also, but I'll put GOD above him based on consistency. · 798 days ago ·

  • hoosierbred77 · I believe we have the one of the best if not the best 2 year-old colt in the country named Alumni. Broke his maiden at first time asking while equaling the track record at 5 furlongs. Has any of the top 2 year-olds in the country done that or have bettered his time? The answer is no! · 979 days ago ·

The old reliable guy... too bad he didn't get a pace to run at or he would have won the Derby. But instead, nobody goes with War Emblem, and they go 1-2-3 all the way around the track. If you watch the race, Eddie D. has him in a good spot, and he starts to make a nice stretch run... but there's nothing to run at... nobody's tired.
