Payton d'Oro Ready for Molly Pitcher
In 2010, it was his wife Cindy and Just Jenda. A year later, trainer Larry Jones hopes that it will be Payton d’Oro who will get her picture taken in the Grade 2, $250,000 Hill ‘n’ Dale Molly Pitcher Stakes. A Grade 1-placed 5-year-old mare by Medaglia d’Oro, Payton d’Oro will enter Sat...

A Weighty Issue in the Delaware Handicap
The Delaware Park Racing Secretary, Pat Pope, seems to be sending a few messages with his assignment of the weights for the track's premier race, the 2011 Delaware Handicap

OK, but does weight REALLY matter that much? The horse weighs 1100 lbs. For example, if you put a calculator in your backpack, do you feel it? Just my humble opinion... but point well taken on the weight assignments.

Hollendorfer said they wouldn't run if they only got 1 pound, so 2 pounds was required to get this great matchup.

Sure it does, Chris ... especially considering how close many of their contests have been in the past. Wouldn't that be called extortion, horshumagu?

Don't know why we even bother having Handicaps anymore, as horses don't get shackled with weight like in the past. Handicap races have lost their meaning in today's let's all be friends world.

I think the weight assignments are right on. HDG at this moment is a peg in front of blind luck on the season. and seriously what is 2 pounds? For all intents and purpose they are equal weighted. Wait till Life at Ten pulls the shocker here then the dash to the ladies classic will really heat up!

I think 'Havre' should be weighted higher, although I think it probably should be 'just' one pound. What I find much more interesting, though, is that only *one* colt/older horse in Saturday's Hollywood Gold Cup carried anything close to either weight here.....Candy carried 122, the rest much less. Says quite a bit about the older horses running this season.

Considering that Blind Luck had to concede 9 lbs in the Cotillion and 6 lbs in the Delaware Oaks I think the connections of Havre De Grace can bite the bullet in this instance.

I have to respectfully disagree with the thought that a horse with 5 less Grade 1 wins and a million or so less in earnings should be conceding weight to Blind Luck. In the perfect world the horse with 6 Grade 1 wins and the million more in earnings should be carrying about 3-5 lbs more. But I guess that something is different in this scenerio. Looks like Hollendorfers' posturing and nominating to 3 or 4 different races accomplished the goal he was looking to achieve. Unfortunately it wont help much on the Track Saturday.

Dubby.............Quit being a cry baby and quit living in the past. By your own admission HDG is number one RIGHT NOW and the weights assigned are based on how the handicapper feels they line up RIGHT NOW. Personally, I think that now that BL is now back on track she should be carrying about five pounds more than HDG because she happens to be that much better.

I am surprised by some of these comments ... so a trainer can decide what his horse's weight in a handicap should be, horshumagu? What a terrible message for the sport that is. It seems that Dubby30 is the voice of reason on this one ... One filly has 6 grade 1 wins, is a champion, and is in top form, yet carries 2 less pounds than a filly who has won a single grade 1, and has not been a champion. Hollendorfer called the shot, and got his way.

It would seem that with Pope being the racing secretary at Oaklawn also, with that being my home track, one can only hope that Rick Porter and Fox Hill Farm continue to bring their horses to Oaklawn after a situation like this. Hollendorfer certainly played this perfectly, even though it may have cost him money to nominate to every other race available.

They should be at equal weights. Yes HDG won the only meeting between the two this year, but as Brian pointed out BL has the edged of the distance and track, being that she has beaten HDG over this track and at this distance before. She also is supposed to be back to her form last year, so in all fairness the weights, if reflecting everything up to this point would be equal. Hollendorfer loses a lot of respect for doing this crap, even Zenyatta and her connections would allow her to carry higher weights. What Hollendorfer did was act like a spoiled child who wouldn't play if he didn't get his way, and that would have cost the sport a fantastic match up and continuation of the type of rivalry that the sport so rarely sees. He had no problem with shipping or weight last year. He felt she relished the travel and was the much superior, why the change now?

Brian..........all joking aside, this isn't an allowance race based on whether a horse has won G1 races, etc., in the past. It's a handicap based on how the handicapper feels they would hit the wire. Obviously the handicapper feels that HDG is slightly better at equal weights and is assigning a token two pounds more. And to suggest that trainers have not played one race against another to get a better weight assignment. No I guess that has never happened before.

Dubby.....If I audition for comedy I can always use you as a reference. I may even use some of your material. Look at the nominations for various races. How many trainers nominate their horses for numerous races and many on the same day or the same weekend? Surely you can do better than that. And quit questioning a trainer (one with thousands of wins) and quit calling him a coward. The only exception I could possibly make for calling him a coward would be if he would have run in the G3 Obeah against optional claimers instead of the G1 Ogden Phipps against Awesome Maria.

Sorry....you were able to seperate between HdG and Blind Luck. So has Jason Shandler of Bloodhorse and Bill Finley of ESPN. In fact, the voters over at NTRA have been able to seperate these two horses rather easily. Now when the racing secretary of Delaware, HdG's own backyard mind you, offers the same sentiment you cry foul and whine. Brian, you can't have it both ways.

Vinnie ... who is my pick in this race? Havre De Grace is. What does that have to do with a bad situation, where a trainer calls out a weight scenario where his horse will or will not run, and then the track placates. Think if every trainer and track did that ... NOT GOOD for the sport.

It is not about who you think is best, it is who has the best credentials up till this point. It is about who is improving and who has the edge. BL has the better credentals and has the edge, so she should get the weight. She has the edge because she beat HDG over this track and distance. She is the one coming back into form when HDG has stayed where she was at the start of the season. Based on everything up to this point BL still hold the edge and should get the weight.

Brian, just like Blame refusing to run in the Woodward last year because of equal weight with Quality Road. Heck, did John Shirreffs had to think over Zenyatta's weight for the Lady's Secret. I believed he mentioned that 129 lbs. was the highest he was going to go with her. And he got his wish. It happens. And if you train a six time Grade 1 winning horse you call the shots.

129 is a good bit more than 122. At least he was willing to have Zen carry some weight. And where was the artical that quotes the connections of Blame refusing to run in the Woodward because of equal weights? Never saw anyone from that camp complaining about that. Heck they didn't complain when the mighty mare carried 3lbs less than them.

DeadHeat - I absolutely agree with you that Blind Luck has the better credentials. Much better. However, it's not about what happened twelve months ago, but just a few months ago. That's why the NTRA has HdG with 10 first place votes versus just one for Blind Luck. And wasn't Brian Zipse giving out the 'half year HOY award' to HdG just recently as well?

Dubby................HDG should have run in the Phipps. They decided early on that they would go in the easier race, the Obeah, which even for a G3 was a total joke……………..As far as Blind Luck passing on the Apple Blossom. The Azeri was her 12th race in 13 months including her third race this year and she was tired. The Azeri showed that. The Apple Blossom would have been 13 races in 14 months which would have included several trips back and forth across the country and her forth race of the year. In the meantime HDG was fresh for the Azeri and the AB would have been her second race with very little travel. And it's not as if they ran Blind Luck in a different race that weekend instead of the Apple Blossom or the following weekend for that matter. They didn't run again for an additional 6 weeks. In the meantime.

If HdG beats BL people will herald her all the more for carrying two lbs extra.IMO, if you really think the 2 lbs is going to make or break HdG, then you must not have much faith in her. NYV, I need more than that. No more disgusting, negative comments about Ruffian. I mean do you realize that you said Foolish Pleasure taught her a lesson? Or, I know you gave some graphic description of her injury to "prove" your theory or anti-theory that she was ahead. I don't care about that point, but your description was not necessary and not the words of an animal lover, and you know it. As far as "Senclair" trying to hide his well, hatred may be too strong of a word, I saw right through that months ago. "I liked Ruffian, BUT" I'm sure he only backed down after he saw he was in the minority. I don't respect that, either. I can respect truth without the disgusting negativity, but you over-taxed my limit of your "facts" this past anniversary week. Oh, yah, I just love the hit and run digs about the Yankees. Tell "Senclair" to stick around sometime.

Strange but true this guy was off due to complications from deodorant...From the DRF:Jones was diagnosed with high levels of aluminum in his system, and it led to an enlarged liver and high blood pressure. His doctors worked to lower the aluminum levels, which were six times the norm, due in large part to the antiperspirant Jones was using. A hands-on horseman, Jones said he would shower twice a day and “slather on” the product that, like most deodorants, had aluminum as its chief ingredient. “It affected every part of me,” he said.
